lifting the inch or closing the #3?
i know they are completly different in which type of grip strength they involve but if you could pick one which do you think is most impressive?

The inch, no question.
I don't know if it is harder than closing a #3 (I think it probably is, but don't know), but with the drama of actually lifting something, and the history added in, it is definitely more impressive than squeezing a spring.
Now all the grip people can kick the token powerlifter in the thread .

It's the Thomas Inch dumbbell. A replica of the original made by Mr Inch himself.
It weighs 172 lbs, and has a 2 3/8" diameter handle with no knurling.

Have to go with the Inch as well ...
When Kaz deadlifted the Inch and then cleaned and pressed it back in the 80s he was the FIRST person since Thomas Inch to actually lift it. That means it MUST take wickedly sick strength (BTW, I've heard conflicting accounts about Thomas Inch himself ... some sites say he could only deadlift the DB, while others say he could clean and press it ... not sure which is correct).
Anyhow, these days, while there are a number of pro strongmen who can deadlift the Inch, even a very select few who can clean and press it, the number of folks who can close a #3 is, I believe, considerably longer.
I guess I'd put the lifts in this order of "impressiveness":
1) Cleaning and Pressing the Millenium Bell (don't think anyone has ever done it).
2) Deadlifting the Millenium Bell.
3) Cleaning and Pressing the Inch.
4) Closing a #4 CoC.
5) Deadlifting the Inch.
6) Closing a #3 CoC.
(Cleaning and Pressing assumes a one handed clean and press ... if you do it two handed it really becomes more about pressing power than grip strength)
