Facts about Leptospirosis
I know there are a lot of hunters and hikers on this forum, so I wanted to post some facts about Leptospirosis.
I have worked for a veterinarian for about 20 years, and recently we have noticed more cases of Leptospirosis. Since Lepto is a zoonotic disease (transmittable to humans from animals) and can have some pretty awful consequences, I thought it may be helpful to post some facts about this disease to help protect outdoorsmen.
Lepto is a bacterial disease that is carried by wildlife and transmitted through contact with infected urine and other body fluids. The are 17 different strains out there; however 4 are seen more commonly.
Lepto vaccines are available for dogs, however this vaccine NEEDS to be boosted yearly. The newer vaccines are very safe and have been proven to be 95-99% effective against the bacteria. Only the 4 most common strains are currently being vaccinated against.
Lepto can cause IRREVERSIBLE kidney and/or liver failure. It can kill. If caught in time, IV fluid therapy and antibiotics will usually cure it, but it can relapse.
If you hunt, hike, or even live in an area where wildlife is present, please keep this potentially deadly disease in mind. Always practice good hygene, wash hands and/or wear gloves when preparing wild game. Vaccinate your dog for lepto, especially if he hunts with you.
