Smile What is a good/fast time for 400 metre sprint?

Im talking about at a professional athletic level. I am just starting out and I am down to 54 seconds in a sprinting dash. I believe to be competive that you have to get it under the 30 second mark...

    input and suggestions welcome.

    thanks in advanced.

400m/4 = 100m. A 30s 400m means 7.5s for each 100m. Realize that the current WR for 100m is over 9 seconds. I believe Michael Johnson still holds the 400m record, somewhere under 45s, but nowhere near 30s. 30s is impossible for humans.

edit: looked it up on Wikipedia. The WR belongs to MJ at 43.18s.

under 30 seconds? on a bicycle maybe.

for human beings, like megawatt said the WR is a 43.18, which Jeremy Wariner is coming close to, btw.

how old are you? you may be at a good time for your age, so you should set more realistic goals.

a fast time for high school is 49's and below. a super fast time for high school is 47's and below. a good time for professional athletetes is sub 45.

26 but I have done lots of high impact/cardio sports such as rugby and am very fit, I want to give sprinting a go.

I got my time down already, I have a good coach now so I will keep you informed.

So that is like 45 seconds for 400 metres. thanks for the post.

If you're not a pro than a good time would be below 50 sec. Like megawatt pointed out, MJ does hold the record. That dude is insanely fast. It really depends on what level of an athlete and what type of athlete you are.

    Need a workout?

Hey, sub 45 sec is olympic timing. To make money at it you should at least be down in these times to be endorsed. But anyways, 54 is a good start. I am the past Collegiate National Champ in the 400 meter, so if you need any good workouts, let me know. My email is Macy23@aol.com. Good Luck

If you want to run the 400 meter professionally I'd say you'd have to go under 45 seconds. You might get someone to sponsor you if you were in the 45's. Jeremy Warnier runs his in 44.00 I believe. He won the olympic gold in Athens.

Like those said above 30 sec is impossible and your timing is impressive. I ran sprints at a D1 college. I think decent times for guys in the 400m is around 45-46. But 400m dash is one of the hardest race to run b/c while a lot of ppl can run 45-46 once in a day few can runn it 2-3 times in a race. This is necessary for some competitions there are usually prelims and finals and sometimes semi in BIG races.

I think it is humanly impossible to get down to anywhere near 30 seconds... for the average person ( a "just-fitness" guy) a good time for the 400m would be anything between 50-60. Thats really good for someone who isn't in any sort of athletic training.

In highschool track meets, the placing times in a high competitive area are anywhere from 47s to 49s. 47 is kicking it pretty hardcore.

As many have said before me, to get to the professional level you need to be in the 45s and sub-45s to compete in anything.

In my 8th grade year my PR was a 54. You have to understand that a lot of elite sprinters are a result of their training, but more importantly their talent. In sprinting it's possible to reach a plateau that you can't really break. For me right now as a junior, I've gotten down to a 51, and I've stayed at that PR since last year. That being said, I probably won't get that much better due to lack in genetics and talent.

The guys that run the really fast times are already breaking 48s right now in High school. We had a junior last year run in the 47s-ish range.

Of course, if you feel that you can push yourself to those extremes, by all means give it a go! You never know until you try... for all we know you could be the next Olympic 400m champion.

an impressive time for someone who never ran before is under 60, under 55 is pretty damn tough to get unless you've been training and under 50 is really hard without great genetics and tough training. I run 49 and I was recruited division 1 and work my ass off so there you go...

when i was in high school, i ran the 400 in 49.7. that was good enough for state meets. micheal johnson runs it in 43 but i think the 2nd place guy is usually around 45-46 seconds. I would aim for 46 right now and worry about 43 when you get there.

I am a field hockey player playing first team hockey. A pitch we used to play at was right next to the local running track. I snuck in and buttered up running coach to let me run with her son (400m runner) as a warm up before out hockey training started.

Long story short, I think he though some dude in full hockey kit, including shin pads was going to be left in his dust.

Well Ii. Wasn't invited to do it again after I trashed her son with a 48 second lap.

I have never trained to be a runner but I think I might take it up. I always have been like Achillies on my feet. I think I scored the fastest league goal in UK in 3 seconds from a pushback on hockey pitch. I have done great south run (just turned up and. Ran - no training) 74 mins.

I think I can still comfortably do a sub 50 400m. I am very good at controlling my un-self-conscious concentration and just allow my body to flow and not be encumbered by thought.

I still feel 24 but I am 37 these days. Little over weight at 12st 11lbs and 5'9" and legs are full of muscle tbh.

Think I will join local AC and see if I am competitive.
