Question A TRUE "Shocker"! Low GI maltodextrin?!?

    First, please check this out:

    http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/sn/carbs.html

    WHAT!?!?!?

Either yet another supplement company is trying to make a quick buck by depending on people’s ignorance and throwing around marketing buzz-words OR I have been totally misguided in my “knowledge” about maltodextrin.

As far as I know, maltodextrin IS TECHNICALLY a “complex carb” BUT……… the bonds that compose maltodextrin are very weak, and readily broken apart in the stomach; moreover, the chain is extremely minimal in composition. Maltodextrin results in a glycemic response similar to that of dextrose having a VERY HIGH glycemic index rating and therefore can cause a large insulin response.

Now, Shocker Nutrition claims that their Complex Carbs Product with “100% pure maltodextrin” is “metabolized at a slow, steady rate that can help to sustain energy level” AND (here’s the best) “Maltodextrin has a low glycemic index which provides for a steady insulin release”.

Perhaps I am really just a DUMB belle OR perhaps Shocker Nutrition is misguiding their consumers.

Can somebody PLEEEEEZE shed some light on this topic?

This is confusing. I have found nothing to show that Maltodextrin has anything but a high Glycemic Index and Insulin Index.

"Maltodextrin is a glucose polymer (a string of glucose units put together, similar to the protein peptide). It is therefore, by definition, a complex carbohydrate. However it's more complex nature does NOT slow digestion. Therefore, the GI and II remain high. Maltodextrin is the absolute best carbohydrate to consume during exercise for rapidly delivering blood glucose and for muscle glycogen recovery. It's also best for fluid uptake."

The only low glycemic index maltodextrin I could find was a fiber supplement, fibersol 2, which is described as "digestion resistant maltodextrin".

I have seen other "complex" carb drinks with maltodextrin as the main ingredient.

    EXACTLY my point!

The fact that it is technically a COMPLEX carb does NOT automatically mean that it "has a LOW GI" as Shocker Nutrition claims!!!!

There MUST be another explanation here other than "false-advertising". I can't believe that any supplement company would be that careless and yet I can't find ANY evidence to suggest otherwise.

    Anyone?

uh, what the hell are "complex carbohydrates" as the ingrediant?? Oats?? Sweet potatoes?? Did they chop 'em up and put them in there?? I think it's pure bull, but. Is that not completely contradictory to the point of maltodextrine??

    Exclamation Not A Scam!

Maltodextrins can be either low or high GI depending on their branching. Typically, a straight chain maltodextrin will have a higher/high GI, while a branched chain maltodextrin will have a lower/low GI rating. Most companies do not label which type of maltodextrins they are using in their products, therefore it is hard to determine which you are receiving. Some of the branched chain maltodextrins are often used in "diet" meal replacement because of their low GI characteristics. Dan Duchaine mentioned that he used these maltodextrins in his "diet" meal replacements specifically for this reason. Of course, the high GI maltodextrins can be used to take advantage of their quick digesting characteristics as well. Please look at the quality of our products as a whole before you jump to conclusions that we are playing on peoples ignorace. I would be more than happy to send you a sample for lab testing of any of our products.
