nixes state funeral
BY BILL HUTCHINSON
DAILY NEWS STAFF WRITER
The father of "Crocodile Hunter" Steve Irwin mourned the loss of his "best mate ever" yesterday but declined the offer of a state funeral, saying it wouldn't be in keeping with his son's Outback style.
"The state funeral would be refused because he's an ordinary guy, he's just an ordinary bloke," said Bob Irwin, 66, who taught his son how to wrestle giant crocs.
"He was just like a guy in the street, and he had this ability to get through to people," he said. The Australia Broadcasting Corp. reported that Terri Irwin, Steve's wife, also had decided against a state funeral.
Steve Irwin, 44, was killed Monday in a stingray attack. The elder Irwin said he was proud that his son died doing what he loved.
"That's a lot better than getting hit by a bus," the father said.
"Steve knew the risks involved with the type of work he was doing, and he wouldn't have wanted it any other way," he said.
Bob Irwin said he often spoke to his son about the dangers of working in the wild, and they even joked about the risks.
"That's not to say we were careless, but we treated it like it was just part of the job ... nothing to worry about, really."
As tributes poured in, the head of one of Steve Irwin's wildlife charities warned that Internet scammers were trying to divert donations. Michael Hornby of Wildlife Warriors urged the public to be careful.
Standing by a makeshift memorial outside the Australia Zoo, the Queensland animal park the dad founded and his son took to new heights, Bob Irwin said he and Steve were more "good mates" than a traditional father and son.
"I'll remember Steve as my best mate ever," he said. "I'm a lucky, lucky guy that I've had the opportunity to have a son like Steve."

Being interested in crocodiles and similar animals, I enjoyed his stuff.
That was a really sad thing that happened.
The heart is the worst place to get stung at by anything, whether it'd be a stingray or any other animal. The human heart is a life organ. If it stops working, it doesn't take long at all to die.

i got another good story about steve... this sums up the type of bloke he was pretty well, and how much he loved his mates..
not sure if u've heard it or not, but here it is..
1 night in queensland they had a huge downpour of rain and the zoo was flooding... the crocodile enclosure's were so filled with water that apparently the crocs could escape if they wanted to... well anyway steve and his best mate Wes *im sure u've heard of him be4* went to the zoo at about midnight to try and relocate the crocs so they wouldnt escape.... well steve was sitting up on 1 of the fences of an enclosure when wes was inside lookn for the crocs in the water... they couldnt see one of the crocs coming up behind wes, im sure u know how terrotorial crocs are, and be4 they new it, the croc had takn a bite at wes and got a hold of him right on his thigh, and up near the buttox area.... well without thinking of self preservation or any other dangers, Steve jumped straight onto the crocs back be4 it could go into death rolls on wes and drag him into the water... the croc did release wes eventually and steve got away unharmed...
goes to show what a good mate steve was and what kind of a bloke he is, when he puts the safety of other ppl's lives be4 his own.

I dont mean to sound insensitive, but could it of been pulling the barb from his chest that actually killed him? Obviously its human nature to do what he done, but it may of realised some sort of pressure or something that actually killed him. I have heard things like that happening before.
RIP Steve Irwin :(
