Not true. Unfortunately, most guys with small wrists have small forearms, so their forearms still look small, despite having small wrists. If you are very blessed like Flex Wheeler or Lee Haney, you will have small joints and large muscle bellies, which makes you look great. Lee Priest does not have small wrists or ankles. They are very large for his height. Your best bet to increase the size of your forearms is:

    Heavy deadlifts (no wraps)
Static holds (deadlift bar with heavy weight)
    Grippers
    Wrist curls (last preference)

Working out forearms is soo pointless. You're just spinning your wheels man. They develope naturally as your dead lift and other grip excercises increase in strength. Working forearms to me is like doing fingers curls. Time could be better spent picking up other areas.

Gotta disagree. I do deadlifts, grip work, and heavy lifting every week and my forearms don't grow unless I do a lot of specific hypertrophy training.

Thats fine.. i mean if you want big forarms go for it. I think its more pleasing to see the arms taper down into a point. Big forarms look like tumors or somethig. It's just distracting for me so i never train them.

I agree. Like calves, I firmly believe forearms are genetic. I mean, if ronnie cant get his calves to grow (but can get EVERYTHING else to despite decades of training and experience), dont you think its quite possibly all genetic?

Take a look at Tony Freeman or Flex. There guys prove how much more awesome a guys w/ small wrists (and small joints in general) can look. If you ever watch wrestling, take a look at Triple H. His small forearms make his upper arms look HUGE.
Joint size defines the difference between guys that look 'big' and guys that look muscular.
I've found that the best way to get a small forearm to grow is to avoid gloves and straps and squeeze your forearm muscles during movements such as bench, curls, and any back exercise.

Why is there something wrong with having 22 inch calves these days??

If your thighs are pushing the tape to 38" then im pretty sure your calves with look small in comparison.

    That is correct.

I don't see why there was even opposing posts. It's not something that's opinionated. It's a fact: small joints make muscles look bigger and fuller. Example: Flex Wheeler

I disagree forearms are not totally genetic. I take after my mother in body structure and here forearms are very tiny both in size and bone structure. I would venture to guess they are 5 inches in wrist and 8-9 inches in size. My forearms flexed are about 15.5 inches. My wrists are about 7 but were 6 a couple years ago. I often wonder if wrist size IS capable of increase over time.

To the @ i used to be in the same boat as you my forearms were pretty small. I used to do alot of isolation worked and it did help some. But take it from me, the best thing for forearms are deadlifts using a double foreward grip with no straps. Also years of shrugz, military presses, and pretty much any heavy movement will also build forearms over time.

You guys are wrong. Small joints do not make muscles look bigger. Small joints make you look frail and weak.

I want to add that none of the pros have small wrists. I'm 5'10", and my wrists measure 6" around. I can wrap my fingers around them and touch my thumb to my PINKY with room to spare.

My ankles are about 7.5" around. I can touch my thumb to my middle finger when I wrap my hand around them. Having such small joints does NOT make your forearms/ankles look bigger. People with joints as small as mine tend not to have much muscle mass.

Both my calves and my forearms look SMALLER because of the tiny wrists. You see nothing but a guy standing there with these absolutely tiny joints, and it just makes him look frail and weak, not like he has large forearms/calves. The difference is even more pronounced when I stand next to someone average, even if they don't workout.

No, having small jopints with developed muscles makes them look larger.

Having small joints with no muscles=twig
Having large joints with no muscles=goon looking
Having large joints with large muscles= more blockiness

That's ok if you disagree with us, because science and perception agree with us. Small joints only make you look frail if you don't have mass. Once the muscles are developed they look bigger. For example, two people with the same bf% and the same height and the same mass stand next to each other: The guy with the smaller joints will look bigger, fuller, and his muscles will have more "pop" because of the difference in size between the joints and the muscle bellies.

There's really nothing to argue. It's fact. Arnold and Flex Wheeler had small joints. They weren't small.

Very true. That's why Dorian didn't have such great aesthetics compared to some others. He helped it with big lats though. He had more of a Herculean physique whereas others before had more of an Apolonean physique. For those who wish to know the difference, basically Apolonean means small joints and usually what the Greeks would think of as ideal, and Herculean means bigger joints and a more rugged look.

Everybody tends to favor one, but one is not necesarily better, just different and for bodybuilding purposes usually the Apolonean type is more ideal.

I totally agree. Simply doing shrugs, deadlifts, things of that sort, will develop your grip. If you want to work on your grip, grab two super heavy DB's and hold them for as long as you can, even shrug with them.

The difference in development in my forearms as compared to when I directly train them vs. indirectly training them is night and day. What has worked best for me, I learned in one of the FitShow's with Stan McQuay. I do seated wrist curls with a bar to failure, drop the bar, and then go right into standing behind the back wrist curls. The first 3 years of weightlifting I had only indirectly trained my forearms. The top part that got hit in hammer and reverse curls looked great, but the bottom was flat. Since I've started training forearms, I've seen enough of an improvement to convince me to dedicate some effort to directly training them once or twice a week.

For the top part of my forearms and brachiodialis, I alternate between hammer curls and reverse cable bar curls.

ya the best to me is hammer curls and reverse barbell curls they work my foremarms better and you dont mess up your wrist doing them.

Exactly. And my whole point is people who TRULY have small joints tend to NOT have much muscle mass, and it's hard to change that. I have high calf insertions, similar issues with my forearms, and TINY wrists/ankles. Even when I had gained 50lbs, my wrists and ankles did not fill out.

The people you are talking about do not really have 'small' joints. I'd be willing to wager that the vast majority of pros have wrists that are larger than my ankles. You keep talking about people like flex/arnold. I would bet $1000 that both of those guys have wrists that are significantly larger than 6".

Small joints (truly small joints) = frail and weak looking person, especially due to the difficulty that it is to add mass for your average person with this frame size.

Wrong. There is a difference between small joints and high insertions. You are talking about people with high insertions. The two don't have anything to do with each other. You can have high insertions and still have big joints. Besides, by what you're saying Flex Wheeler doesn't have small joints. Ok, then how come he had high calves? No sense. He had tiny joints, but that has nothing to do with insertions. The two are independent of each other.

Both folks with small or big joints can have high insertions.
