    5 Sets of 5 vs 5 Sets of 3

    I know a lot of people like to use the 5 x 5 plan, especially on flat bench. However, has anyone ever tried doing 5 sets of 3? I was thinking of doing 5 sets of 3 of flat, then doinf 2 sets of 8-10 reps on Incline Bench and 2 sets of 8-10 on dumbell bench. I'd be able to hit both fast and slow twitch fibers because of me doing low and high reps.

    Well its simple...more reps will do more for your body. 5 sets of 3, gives you 15 reps. 5 sets of 5 is giving you 25. You're almost doing double doing 5x5's.

    more reps will do more for your body? not exactly. doing 5x3 will give you more strength b/c of the lower rep range then 5x5 which will give you more size.. so both do more for your body just in opposite ways. But dont be afraid to lift heavy to gain size

    If that were true we'd all be doing sets of 100, but the primary goal is to create the maximum stress in the muscle fibers you are trying to target whether they be fast twitch, slow twitch or a combination of both.

    My mistake then. I understand what you're saying though, I just never saw 2 more reps being that much of a difference. I've become confused on here though, because from what I've seen the whole "Low reps, heavy weight for strength and high reps light weight" is wrong, which is what I've lived my life by.
