Looking for a Teri-fic body :)
Hi everyone. Let me introduce myself first. I'm 23 years old and I have been an avid athlete for a long time. For everyone who is spelling-obsessed (I'm an English major so I fall into this category) the name of my journal is so-called because my name is Teri.
Anyhow, I figured it was time to start a journal when I had questions to post EVERYDAY on the forum. It's just easier to write them here and if someone answers me: cool and if not;at least im not taking up someone else's thread space
If anybody has read posts by me, you will know that I am currently in Korea as a teacher and because I've been here for about 2 years I dropped a lot of weight (diet changes, no car, etc.) I went from 108kg to 86kg. I plateaued at this number for the last year even though I was quite active in Hapkido and teaching and walking around. So I figured it was my diet.
I'm no longer looking to "lose the fat." I wanna get ripped and be proud of the muscles I know are lurking beneath my little fat cells So, inspired by a few people on the Transformations page (I actually posted their before and after pictures around my house to give me motivation whenever I want to snack or eat a lot of bread or pizza...it keeps me focused) I took control.
I copied a few workout logs and have sectioned my days accordingly:
Mon: chest/biceps/abs(1.5 hr) hapkido(1hr)
Tue:HIIT(10-20 min up stairs) back/hamstrings(1 hr) hapkido(1 hr)
Wed:cardio(30-45min)Hapkido(1hr)
Thur:Shoulders/triceps/abs(1hr)hapkido(1hr)
Fri:calves/thighs/abs(1hr)hapkido(1hr)
Sat:HIIT(10-20 min up stairs)
Sun: REST (YAYAYAYAYAYA!)
Then it was time to get a hold of the diet. I still haven't figured out what works for me exactly (so if ANYBODY has any ideas, please give me a little shout out!)
I'm 5'10" and currently 78kg(this morning)
Now, according to most people I should be eating between 2000-2500 calories per day...but too be honest that seems like a lot, no? Cuz I want to shed some of this fat.
I do know that I have to stay away from bread and associated products (the reason for my severe weight back in Canada...mom's homemade bread/buns/cookies/ muffins...who can resist, right?) So, I have decided to try for a higher protein, lower carb, lower fat diet, but my weight hasn't moved too much. Here's an example of a 2000-2100 calorie day:
7:00 1c oatmeal/1sc whey/1 tbsp. peanut butter
8:00 workout
9:30 apple/cinnamon/ whey shake
12:00 7 egg whites/100g tuna/chopped veggies(omelette)
12:30 WORK
2:30 1 cup cottage cheese/ 1sc. whey (frozen...so delicious!!!)
5:00 salad(cabbage/lettuc/radish/peppers/onions) small chicken breast
7:30-8:00 1/2c cottage cheese/apple
9:00-10:40 HAPKIDO
11:00 2 tbsp. cottage cheese/1 cup of green tea
So, as you can see I have a large portion of protein(over 200g usually!!!) and VERY low portion of carbs(145g about) and VERY low fat(47g) Its about a 55/25/20 ratio.
ARgh...its all so confusing to me. If there is anybody out there with similar stats (height and weight) please oh please, help me out. Just give me an idea of a number of calories to eat.
I get confused because everyone tells me to eat more, but I look at everybody's journals and they are eating 1800cals or less...
So, my goals are: lose the fat, keep building the muscle.
Here I am and here I go.
(SORRY ITS SOOOOOOO FREAKING LONG!)

Hey darl and welcome! Look forward to tracking your process and sharing your life on this thread... Korea - sounds so interesting! It's not a place you hear of many people going all the time, so I'd be interested to hear how it goes...
Well done on your weight loss - simply fantastic!!! Although I am no expert from what I've read I think your macro break down is a little high in protein - maybe try for a 40/40/20 break down. Dont be afraid of carbs, they are really important when trying to build muscle..
I have similar goals to you so I look forward to reading your thread! By the way what is hapkido?
Enjoy the journey hun, look forward to experiencing it with you xo

HI
I am 6' and about 180 lbs (now )...trying to lose about 10lbs of fat! Before I went on vacation and gained my fat , I was eating about 2500-2800 and maintaining my weight easily with few workout sessions. I'd say you could really go up to and above 2000. Just do it slowly and listen to your body. If you are working hard and eating the 2000+ you should be dropping fat. If you are gaining fat (by bodyfat measurements, not the scale) then you can cut back a bit by 100 calorie increments.
To increase your cals do it slowly and add about 100 calories to your day each week. So this week will be 1800, next week 1900, then 2000, and keep going until you feel as though you are no longer losing fat.
What are you doing for your exercises specifically?

I definitely think you could do 2000 or more. You don't want to lose muscle! Try out different things and see what works! I'm bulking right now and eating around 2500-2600...I'm only around 114 lbs and I'm not gaining much at all even at those high calories!

Good morning everyone! (Well its morning in this part of the world...so..good afternoon )
Thanks for visiting my site and giving me some input, I really appreciate it. I am always impressed with the support of people on this thread.
So, today I'm going to attempt to up my carb-intake(should be interesting...)
genevieved- Hapkido is a martial art, similar to karate I guess. We use kicking techniques, punching techniques, stick-fighting, sword-fighting, and lots of gymnastic-type tumbling skills (at least at my do-jang <gym>) It's so much fun. I had played other sports before and had always wanted to take a martial art, so when I came to Korea and started to laze around...thats when I figured it would be a good time to try As for coming to Korea, I will have been here for 2 years on sept. 11 and to be honest it is such an easy life being a teacher over here. That's why I started bodybuilding, cuz teaching isn't a challenge really. My working hours are great. I usually work about 5-6 hours a day. Sure, the money is THAT great, but its an experience
arose70- my specific exercises include things such as dumbell press/rows/curls/hammer curls/lunges/squats/calf-raises/etc. Just this week I have decided to increase the weight and do less reps.
So today is Friday (woot woot!!! No work tomorrow!!) and in about 2 hours I will be going to the gym to do the following:
leg extensions: 12kgX10(4 sets)
lunges:10kgX10(4 sets)
leg press: 120kgX10(4 sets)
squats: 20(4 sets...VERY SLOWLY...no weights yet, I'm still working on getting my feet to stay flat on the floor)
standing calf-raises: 20 each leg(4 sets)
seated calf-raises: 100kgX10(4 sets)
checked my diet on fitday and this is what I have for today (in order to up my carb intake)
m1:1c oatmeal/1sc.whey/apple
WORKOUT
m2:apple with cinnamon/whey
m3:7 egg whites/1 cup of veggies (omelette) 1 c broccoli
m4: 1/2c cottage cheese/1 tomato
m5:2 cups of salad/chicken breast/no oil.no cholesterol salad dressing/1 sweet potato
m6:3 tbsp. cottage cheese/1tbsp. peanut butter/1sc. whey/10 almonds
HAPKIDO
m7:2 tbsp. cottage cheese/green tea
TOTAL: 2120 calories
fat: 44g (20%)
carb: 206g (35%)
protein:230g(45%)
Not quite 40/40/20 just yet. I'm having a hard time keeping calories up, but keeping the grams of carb and protein down. I will figure it out eventually.
Weighed myself this morning: 78.2kg/but I think my fat is up, so I better start eating more carbs!!!! EEEK! Talk to you later (after the workout when I can barely walk home..hahah)

Try to get about 1-1.5 g. of protein per pound, about .4-.5 g per pound of fat and the rest of your calories from carbs.

Alright just had my lunch and boy am I ever freakin' stuffed!!! Hahahah.
I have a question: If we are supposed to eat 5-6 (or in my case 6-7) smaller meals a day, how can I still get in all my calories. I mean, it's way more convenient to have a big breakfast (today was 501 calories...pre-workout) a big lunch(today was 339 calories...before work) and a semi-big dinner(today will be 403 calories) and then just have smaller snacks (today they are ranging from 176-365) I adjusted my diet for the day to try to incorporate more carbs as suggested. I went to the market to look for broccoli and honestly, what kind of country doesn't sell broccoli??????? It was nowhere in the store and I even managed to use some basic korean to ask for it and they just "didn't have any." What the hell?
So needless to say, I had to work around that and ended up buying a lot of grapes and sweet potatoes instead
So here is my renewed diet for the day:
m1 1c oats/whey/apple (501cal. f7 c78 p34)
WORKOUT
m2 apple/whey and 1/3c oats(shake with water)
(269cal. f3 c36 p27)
m3 5 egg whites/1/2 cup mixed veggies/1c sweet potato (about 2 small ones)
(339 cal. f1 c39 p41)
m4 3tbsp. cottage cheese/1 tbsp. peanut butter
(176 cal. f9 c6 p18)
m5 2 cup salad/1 med. chicken breast
(403 cal. f14 c9 p58)
m6 1/2 c cottage cheese/whey/6almonds(frozen)
(365 cal. f10 c12 p55)
HAPKIDO
m7 2 tbsp. cottage cheese/1 tbsp. peanut butter/green tea (136cal. f9 c5 p11)
TOTAL: 2189 cal f55 c184 p244
What do you all think about this? Does it seems a little better than what I had posted before? I attempted to add more carbs, but still decrease them throughout the day leaving me with more protein and fat to eat at night. Is that a good idea? I read that on one of the forums.
Oh and what do you guys think of dried coconut? Is it nutritional/beneficial/ or crap?
Anyhow, I have to walk to work. Have a good day or night depending on what part of the world you are in bye bye for now

Sometimes I hate kids so much. Sorry...just venting after what seemed like the longest day on earth. I was happy that it was Friday but it was also like all my students had taken stupid-drugs when they came to school today. Nobody would participate or speak up or listen to me. They continued to rattle away in korean until I yelled myself hoarse. Thank god tonight is fighting at hapkido. I can kick the shiznit out of my stress
Anyhow, I just finished a delicious cup of cottage cheese with choc. whey (frozen of course) I was looking forward to eating that ALL day today....it feels just like cheesecake...ooooh.
I've been reading a lot about KETO and while everyone raves about its successes, I'm not sure if I could actually pull it off. I think I will stick with my current attempt at 40/40/20 (which at the moment is more like 50/30/20) for about a month and then if I dont see many results, I will opt for the KETO version. It seems pretty intense. Does anybody have any suggestions/tips/or praises/critiques about KETO? Please let me know.
Alright, I'm off to kick some serious a$$. Have a T-rific day/night!

Sept.2
I just woke up (its 6:06am) and I'm getting ready to go do some HIIT. Its actually not as bad as it seems~though I am usually dead by the end of it.
I like to go the playground next to me apartment and run up the stairs really fast and then walk down....it seems to work, I do it about 12 times.........and my legs feel like they are melting afterwards...haha alright, wish me luck. here I go.

I hear yah. As much as I dread getting up to go *sigh* running, it feels so great afterwards. In fact, I actually pushed myself by doing 2 extra sprints up the damn steps.(I almost fell down them coming back because my legs were like jello, but hey thats the price you pay, right?)
So here's my nutrition plan for today. I upped my carb and fat intake, still I have more protein than both (25%f 34%c 41%p) So its not too bad...better than before (55%p!!!)
m1(finished) 1c oats/1sc whey/apple
m2 apple or grapes (depending on the craving) and 3 tbsp. cottage cheese/green tea
m3 2c salad/1 med chicken breast/2sweet potato
m4 1/2c cottage cheese/whey/10 almonds
m5 5 egg whites/100g tuna/1c veggies/ 1/2 tbsp olive oil and 1/2 tbsp oil-free dressing
m6 1 tbsp peanut butter/ 1/2c cottage cheese
m7 1 tbsp. peanut butter/ 3 tbsp. cottage cheese/ green tea
It works out to about 2196 cal. 59f 209c 214p
Not too bad, considering I was eating below 150c the last few days and below 50f....this seems more realistic i suppose
Well I have to go do dishes. I know what you're all thinking....you wish you could do the same thing. I can barely contain MY excitement. Have a good one.

Biiiiiiiiiiig Mistake
Alright, so being the loving girlfriend that I am, I decided to whip up a batch of cookies for my boyfriend who is in the navy. BIG HUGE GIGANTIC MISTAKE. How long has it been since I had cookie dough? I can't even remember. Well, I had a nibble...then another nibble...and then a little more.......oh my god, now my stomach hurts from the sweetness that I haven't had for awhile. ****.
Oh well, I'm gonna drink lots of water and go for a VERY long walk after a VERY healthy dinner later. Oh my oh my. I guess I can cut the peanut butter out of my meal plan for today

I wouldn't deprive yourself of fat today b/c you had it yesterday. That could set you up for another binge (comes from experience). I hear you on the cookie dough. I have had many a cookie dough tummy aches! Just move on and eat normally today. I know the urge will be to deprive yourself, but DON"t punish yourself!

experiment day 1
Thanks for that. I had some green tea which relaxed my upset tummy and I followed that later by eating some cottage cheese Anyhow, today was a pretty uneventful saturday, so I spent ALOT of time browsing through the articles on this website.
I came across one in particular which helped me to create a "meal plan" of sorts for losing body fat. I tweaked it a little (because of food availability) and Im gonna test it for 11 days to see what occurs.
I went through A LOT of math and calculations to get my macros pretty straight forward and in the right places....(yes, I know, I have NO life )
So here is tomorrow's meal plan:
Day 1-2227 calories 45f 263c 201p
m1-1 cup oats/1 med. apple/1 sc. whey
WORKOUT
m2-1 c grapes/1sc whey/.5c oats
m3-3 sweet potatoes/1.5c salad/1 med. chicken breast
m4-apple/1 sc chocolate whey
m5-3 egg whites/100g tuna/.5c veggies/.5tbsp olive oil
m6-2 tbsp. cottage cheese/1 tbsp peanut butter
HAPKIDO
m7-2 tbsp. cottage cheese/green tea
If I can stick to this, I think it will work. Anyhow, this meal plan is for days 1,2,8,9(out of 11 total days)
meal plan 2 (for days 3,4,5,10,11)-
2226cal 46f 254c 208p
m1- 1 cup oats/1sc whey/apple
WORKOUT
m2- .5c oats/whey/grapes(1 c)
m3- salad/med. chicken/2 sweet potatoes
m4-1 c broccoli/apple/whey
m5-4 egg whites/100g tuna/.5 tbsp. olive oil/mixed veggies
m6-2 tbsp. cc/1 tbsp. peanut butter
HAPKIDO
m7-2 tbsp. cottage cheese
MEAL PLAN for Day 6
m1- .5c oats/apple/whey
WORKOUT
m2- 1c grapes/whey/2 tbsp. cottage cheese
m3- 1 sweet potato/med. chicken breast/1c broccoli/salad
m4-2 hard boiled egg whites/1 tbsp.pb/7 almonds
m5-4 egg whites/100g tuna/1c veggies/.5tbsp olive oil
m6-2tbsp. cottage cheese/1 tbsp. pb
HAPKIDO
m7-3tbsp. cottage cheese/green tea
And lastly, the meal plan for day 7
m1-1c oats/whey/apple
WORKOUT
m2-.5c oats/whey/2 tbsp. cottage cheese
m3-2 cups salad/chicken breast/1c broccoli
m4-apple/3 hard boiled eggs
m5-6oz tuna/3egg whites
m6-.5c cottage cheese/whey
HAPKIDO
m7-.5c cottage cheese/1tbsp. pb
So thats the whole plan basically for 11 days. I will attempt to stay within the boundaries without a cheat day, just to see what kind of results will come up(and how fast, etc.)
I guess you could say, I'm starting an experiment. Yay!

Daydreamerx- No problem I'm in korea, remember, nobody speaks ANY English here. Hahaha. Thanks for your input on my journal. I want to be a writer, so details are pretty important...plus I tend to confuse myself if I don't write things down (and forget things...)
I also just REALLY want to figure out what works for me. And to say that I made a nutrition plan on my own (that actually works) would be kinda cool, cuz its means I actually learned something. Its like acing a final exam, you know?
Anyhow, I'm babbling away and its freakin 6:10 in the morning(yawn) and Sunday. Sometimes I find it hard to NOT do any workout. I mean, to have a whole day to rest, I usually feel like a damn sloth, however, I know the rest is important for my body, so I have to do it. I guess as long as I eat healthy today (after the cookie-dough binge) I will be alright for the coming week's workouts!
Well, I'm gonna go....watch tv I guess....or....read a book.......
ooh i think today i will get my eyebrows waxed ^^
should be fun~maybe i will even get a haircut.....

I know what you mean about rest days. I have one tomorrow (Sunday) and I always feel so lazy! You just reminded me that I need to get my eyebrows waxed!

So I just had my lunch and I am sooooo full....vegetables fill me up so crazy much.
I had like 2 cups of salad:
lettuce, tomatoes, peppers, bean sprouts
med. chicken breast
1 c. sweet potatoes (they were cut up)
1 apple
oooooooooooh...my tummy is so bloated right now...hahahaa...time to go for a walk and work it off.....at least I got all my carbs in for the day (the major ones anyhow) I think eating so much is actually going to be really hard for me, but I gotta do it, right?
Well, Im headed to the salon for eyebrow waxing, the mall for some shopping (new earrings and maybe a new t-shirt......I LOVE t-shirts!!!!!!)

I skipped the eye-brow waxing and bought myself some new clothes for the fall season. I got jeans for like 7$...in KOREA!! Where people are the size of sticks!! I must be doing something right, if I can finally fit into a pair of jeans in korea (not stretch, either) and not have my tummy falling over the edges. Hahahaha. I did however purchase the earrings as planned (1$ for 2 pairs..what a bargain..i love it here!)
Other than that, I think I definately got cardio in today, frick I walked all over the freakin' city and by the time I got home I was so tired and sweaty...it was disgusting....but hey, it was worth it.
Now, tomorrow, back into the swing of things. Its crazy. I always look forward to the weekends, but on Sundays I can hardly wait for the week to start just so I can get back to the "routine" because its easier when I have work.
Alright, have a good day or night depending on what part of the world you are in. Later

Good morning, good morning, good morning. And a happy monday. I just got back from about 20 minutes of HIIT (You'd think it would get easier...but nooooooooo) Now I'm scarfing down 1c of oatmeal with some protein powder (delish!) and I had an apple.
I'm a little disappointed because since I've upped my calories (from about 1800 to 2200...gradually) I've noticed a lack of weight loss. I'm wondering if I'm eating too much food because I feel REALLY full and bloated at the end of the day. If I am going to cut cals....which I'm not sure I want to do, I should start with carbs first right? Or should I keep them up because of my heavy workout schedule. Or should I just hang tight and be patient? Gak, I'm so confused. But...as long as i dont go over 79kg, I will be happy its taken me a long time to get here.
On a brighter note, I've noticed more muscle definition especially in my arms and shoulders which is exciting. Well I better finish my oatmeal, soon I will have to attack the beast (ab exercises!!)
Have a good day/night.

Somehow I just managed to delete my thread...frick.
Anyhow, what I had written before i deleted it was this:
I just completed another batch of cottage cheese...it would be so much easier if they just sold it here..oh well, watcha gonna do?
So anyhow, here was my workout this morning (followed directly by a whey/small banana/oats shake!)
CHEST FOUR SETS)
chest press: 40kgX12
Cable Crossover:14kgX10
Dumbell press: 6kgX12
BICEPS FOUR SETS)
dumbell curls:9kgX10
hammer curls:9kgX8
barbell curls:10kgX10
ABS 3 sets)
slow crunches: 40
side bends: 9kgX20
leg raises: 10
I also successfully managed to go to the post office, mail a parcel AND go to the bank and wire money back to Canada...all before 10:30am. Craziness....
Later

I would just be patient and give your body time to adjust. My bloating is finally starting to subside that i had when I upped calories. I was so tempted to drop them back down, but I'm glad that I didn't. Just give it some time and let your body get used to it!

I've figured out the key to the whole losing weight thing:
PATIENCE
Twinette, you are so right. I just have to wait and I'm sure my body will catch up with me. I mean, how can I NOT lose fat when I am eating incredibly clean and working out as much as I am. I mean, compared to how i used to eat and not workout, my body is probably thanking me in other ways right now (especially my digestive system and my liver )
Be patient, be patient, be patient. It took me 20 years to become 250lbs(im 173lbs now), its not like im going to become 145 over night. I have to give it time and stick with something instead of giving up when it doesnt work right away. I guess I was just hoping that all this bodybuilding would be a nice "quick fix" kinda thing...but no...its gonna take time I know.
However, I will continue reading and educating myself, and we will see what results I can yield.
So, this morning I woke up took my 2 Hot-Rox and did some ab work (i prefer to do this at home, I find it more effective for some wierd reason) and then I ate breakfast (the usual, oatmeal and protein powder with an apple.) In about an hour or so I will head to the gym for my daily workout (back and hamstrings today yay! my favorite workout day!) Then I will follow my workout with a banana/whey/oat shake....
I'm on day3 of The Plan, so I get to add some variety to my diet (ooh...broccoli instead of an extra sweet potato....big change )

You can do it! I started out at 185 lbs and it took time, but I just took it slowly and I didn't give up! Now, I"m having to GAIN weight for the first time in my life! I wouldn't have believed it, but it's just as hard, especially mentally

Wow! Way to go, I'm hoping by December I will be down or close to my goal. I just need to remember to stay focused. I'm getting a lot of criticism from my old friends: Why don't you come out and drink anymore? (I never liked it before, I just did it because I was lonely and I liked the "attention") Why don't you come out to dinner with us? (So then I don't have to drool while everyone else inhales a double cheese, triple meat pizza.) You are getting too skinny, don't over do it (Yes, because being fit and lean is way worse than being 250lbs of pure lard, right?)
That's one thing that I've noticed with people. Especially friends or family. They don't want to tell you that you are getting too fat because they are afraid your feelings will be hurt, or its "not nice." But as soon as you start losing weight, they suddenly become concerned with your health. What's up with that? I almost wish my mother or father would have sat me down and said "listen, you are getting unhealthy, get yourself under control!!"
Sure, I would have cried, but then maybe I would have confronted the fact that I was *gasp* obese. It wasn't until I came to Korea (where I stuck out like a sore thumb, not just cuz I was about a foot taller than most of them and had a big nose. It was also because I was fat!) that I came face to face with what I had become over the years and realized there was something I could do. Thank god, I came here, thats all I can say.
In the same sense, however, I'm afraid to move back to Canada because I will gain the weight back. I know I won't if I continue to work hard, but its kinda like an alcoholic leaving rehab you know? you fall back into the OLD routine. The longer I am here and geting things under control, the better I feel about myself and will be ready to come back to Canada and deal with mom's homemade bread, pizza, muffins, cookies, roast beef, white potatoes, etc. I will be able to make some awesome choices about my lifestyle and hopefully pursue a career in a field of health (whether it be writing or actual training!)
Anyhow, that was just a little somethin' somethin' to get people thinking.
