Independent and combined effects of liquid carbohydrate/essential amino acid ingestion on hormonal and muscular adaptations following resistance training in untrained men.

This investigation examined chronic alteration of the acute hormonal response associated with liquid carbohydrate (CHO) and/or essential amino acid (EAA) ingestion on hormonal and muscular adaptations following resistance training. Thirty-two untrained young men performed 12 weeks of resistance training twice a week, consuming ~675 ml of either, a 6% CHO solution, 6 g EAA mixture, combined CHO + EAA supplement or placebo (PLA). Blood samples were obtained pre- and post-exercise (week 0, 4, 8, and 12), for determination of glucose, insulin, and cortisol. 3-Methylhistidine excretion and muscle fibre cross-sectional area (fCSA) were determined pre- and post-training. Post-exercise cortisol increased (P<0.05) during each training phase for PLA. No change was displayed by EAA; CHO and CHO + EAA demonstrated post-exercise decreases (P<0.05). All groups displayed reduced pre-exercise cortisol at week 12 compared to week 0 (P<0.05). Post-exercise insulin concentrations showed no change for PLA; increases were observed for the treatment groups (P<0.05), which remained greater for CHO and CHO + EAA (P<0.001) than PLA. EAA and CHO ingestion attenuated 3-methylhistidine excretion 48 h following the exercise bout. CHO + EAA resulted in a 26% decrease (P<0.01), while PLA displayed a 52% increase (P<0.01). fCSA increased across groups for type I, IIa, and IIb fibres (P<0.05), with CHO + EAA displaying the greatest gains in fCSA relative to PLA (P<0.05). These data indicate that CHO + EAA ingestion enhances muscle anabolism following resistance training to a greater extent than either CHO or EAA consumed independently. The synergistic effect of CHO + EAA ingestion maximises the anabolic response presumably by attenuating the post-exercise rise in protein degradation.

A number of physiological events including the level of contractile activity, nutrient status, and hormonal action influence the magnitude of exercise-induced skeletal muscle growth. However, it is not the independent action of a single mechanism, but the complex interaction between events that enhance the long-term adaptations to resistance training. The purpose of the present investigation was to examine the influence of liquid carbohydrate (CHO) and essential amino acid (EAA) ingestion during resistance exercise and modification of the immediate hormonal response on myofibrillar protein degradation as assessed by 3-methylhistidine (3-MH) excretion. After a 4-hour fast, 32 untrained young men (18-29 years) performed a single bout of resistance exercise (complete body; 3 setsx10 repetitions at 75% of 1-repetition maximum; 1-minute rest between sets), during which they consumed a 6% CHO (n=8) solution, a 6-g EAA (n=8) mixture, a combined CHO+EAA (n=8) supplement, or placebo (PLA; n=8) beverage. Resistance exercise performed in conjunction with CHO and CHO+EAA ingestion resulted in significantly elevated (P<.001) glucose and insulin concentrations above baseline, whereas EAA ingestion only increased the postexercise insulin response (P<.05). Time matched at 60 minutes, the PLA group exhibited a peak cortisol increase of 105% (P<.001) with no significant change in glucose or insulin concentrations. Conversely, the CHO and CHO+EAA groups displayed a decrease in cortisol levels of 11% and 7%, respectively. Coinciding with these hormonal response patterns were significant differences in myofibrillar protein degradation. Ingestion of the EAA and CHO treatments attenuated 3-MH excretion 48 hours after the exercise bout. Moreover, this response was synergistically potentiated when the 2 treatments were combined, with CHO+EAA ingestion resulting in a 27% reduction (P<.01) in 3-MH excretion. In contrast, the PLA group displayed a 56% increase (P<.01) in 3-MH excretion. These data demonstrate that not only does CHO and EAA ingestion during the exercise bout suppress exercise-induced cortisol release; the stimulatory effect of resistance exercise on myofibrillar protein degradation can be attenuated, most dramatically when the treatments are combined (CHO+EAA). Through an "anticatabolic effect," this altered balance may better favor the conservation of myofibrillar protein.

The present study was designed to determine whether consumption of an oral essential amino acid-carbohydrate supplement (EAC) before exercise results in a greater anabolic response than supplementation after resistance exercise. Six healthy human subjects participated in two trials in random order, PRE (EAC consumed immediately before exercise), and POST (EAC consumed immediately after exercise). A primed, continuous infusion of L-[ring-(2)H(5)]phenylalanine, femoral arteriovenous catheterization, and muscle biopsies from the vastus lateralis were used to determine phenylalanine concentrations, enrichments, and net uptake across the leg. Blood and muscle phenylalanine concentrations were increased by approximately 130% after drink consumption in both trials. Amino acid delivery to the leg was increased during exercise and remained elevated for the 2 h after exercise in both trials. Delivery of amino acids (amino acid concentration times blood flow) was significantly greater in PRE than in POST during the exercise bout and in the 1st h after exercise (P < 0.05). Total net phenylalanine uptake across the leg was greater (P = 0.0002) during PRE (209 +/- 42 mg) than during POST (81 +/- 19). Phenylalanine disappearance rate, an indicator of muscle protein synthesis from blood amino acids, increased after EAC consumption in both trials. These results indicate that the response of net muscle protein synthesis to consumption of an EAC solution immediately before resistance exercise is greater than that when the solution is consumed after exercise, primarily because of an increase in muscle protein synthesis as a result of increased delivery of amino acids to the leg.

The EAC (essential amino acid-carbohydrate supplement) consumed pre WO, in the study cited above, contained the following:
"The EAC consisted of 6 g of essential amino acids, in amounts designed to increase muscle free intracellular amino acid levels in proportion to their respective requirements for protein synthesis, and 35 g of sucrose in 500 ml of deionized-distilled water. The amounts of essential amino acids in a 500-ml bolus EAC solution were (mg and µmol, respectively) histidine 0.65, 4.2; isoleucine 0.60, 4.6; leucine 1.12, 8.5; lysine 0.93, 6.4; methionine 0.19, 1.3; phenylalanine 0.93, 5.6; threonine 0.88, 7.4; and valine 0.7, 6.0."

As you can see 8-BetaAnabol can be effectively used by bodybuilders to increase muscle protein synthesis and attenuate muscle protein breakdown.

what I will comment on is this

the dosing. I do think that due to size of individual it needs to vary. 1 scoop really didnt cut it for me . Ive been dosing at 2 scoops and its right on the money. 1 scoop may workout for for sub 200lbers. but over 200lbs im thinking 1.5-2 scoops

IMO Watermelon Xtend and 8-BA would likely taste great together. I am currently mixing 1/2 scoop 8-BA w/20g of Watermelon Substance WPI preWO, and though I have never tasted the Xtend, I bet they use the same flavoring.

I only use the product on workout days, taking 1/2 scoop preWO and another 1/2 scoop during. I also take 1/2 scoop in the early AM on nonWO days sometimes if I do not have a meal ready quickly enough upon awaking.

i love when company owners say stuff like that. i could make this for $18 myself, and i already have a bunch of gatorade powder laying around that i could flavor it with. that's an $20 mark up from what it would cost me, so that doesn't compare to what discounts you may or may not get for buying large quantites in bulk.

no. I take 1/2 serving preWO, followed up by an additional 1/2 serving duringWO.

as for the comments on price, have nay of you ever tried bulk amino acids??? I have, and allow me to assure you, the experience of supplementing with these was less than pleasureable, to say the least. It takes 1/2 hour for them to disolve in water, they float to the top of the bottle, and are like drinking water with chopped up medicine in it. what's more, the taste bunk and give you some nasty breath.

8-BA is finely grinded amino acids and dextrose, combined with a great tasting flavoring system. this provides a much more pleasureable experience IMHO.

another important factor to consider is taking duringWO. I simply take the bottle of 8-BA with me to the gym. it blends in a water bottle with minimal shaking, and even mixes descently with only water and mixing straw.

all this, combined with the science backing up the use of amino acids+dextrose and you have a viable supplement for inducing muscle hypertrophy (growth). A supplement that can be taken at any time, has a high bioligical availability due to it's water solubility, and is pleasureable to use. if money is the issue, sure, you can use bulk amino acids and bulk dextrose... I did that for months, and it was less than pleasant. not to mention, next to impossible in the duringWO scenario to mix them. there was also the time I spent measuring it all out.
