Best "healthy" Protein Bar

I have been searching for a protein bar or cookie that does not have sugar alcohols, soy protein (soy lecithin is fine), saturated or trans fats, and is low in sugar. While this seems difficult and may not be the best tasting, I am not willing to relent and eat candy bars, fattening/artery hardening, phytoestrogenic, GI distress causing garbage for the sake of convenience or protein grams (quality matters here folks).

I came upon a good looking product, but the write up, while obviously written by the company and therefore biased, was a good summation of the what and why to avoid in choosing a bar.

Let me get this out of the way...I do not work for this company and have never tried the product. Just thought the information would be helpful and I'd like to read some feedback of any bars that might meet these criteria or close too.
__________________________________________________ _______________
Considering all the protein bars on the market, it is nearly impossible to choose which protein bar is the best for you. To make it even tougher, the packaging the bars come in is very attractive to the eye. We have all done it at one time or another - picked up the bar with the fanciest wrapper and turned it over to look at the nutrition facts panel. All too often we are disappointed at the sugar content or the high carb content or inferior ingredients. How are we supposed to find a great protein bar when there are so many choices?

Before we review what you should be looking for in a protein bar, I want to tell you what to avoid. By looking at what to avoid this will eliminate approximately 80% of the bars on the market. To put your mind at ease, we developed a bar that is as close to perfect as any bar ever made. It is called the Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar by Performance Biomedical Laboratories. This bar is quite advanced and contains the highest quality ingredients available.

Avoid Bars High In Sugar

The first ingredient you want to avoid are bars high in sugar content. This is the trickiest thing to look for because sugars come in a variety of different names. Basically, view the nutrition facts panel and go to “sugars” to look at how many grams of sugar the bar contains. Try to pick a bar that contains less than about 5 grams of sugar. Obviously, people want to eat a bar that tastes sweet. Some bars on the market actually have in excess of 25 grams of sugar! One nice thing about the Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar is that it only contains 4 grams of sugar.

Avoid Bars Containing Maltitol

The second ingredient you want to avoid is maltitol. The bar manufacturers know that high amounts of sugar are bad so they add a sugar alcohols such as “maltitol” that does not need to be listed as a sugar on the label. Maltitol is a sugar substitute that literally causes you to have an upset stomach and even diarrhea in many cases. You may ask yourself why would a manufacturer add an ingredient that upsets your stomach? The simple answer is it is a very “convenient” ingredient. It does not count as a sugar and some do not even list it as a carbohydrate! Nutrition handbooks actually describe maltitol as having a “laxative threshold” meaning that in even small amounts it acts as a laxative! Believe it or not, some of the bars on the market list maltitol as the first ingredient! The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar contains no maltitol and does not meet the laxative threshold which means it will not cause an upset stomach.

Since the sugar content or shall I say “sweetener” content is such an issue these days I will go into more detail as to why the Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar is superior. Upon tasting the Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar you will be pleasantly surprised at how sweet the chocolate fudge flavor is. You may ask how is this bar so sweet, yet contains no maltitol and is so low in sugar? Performance Biomedical Laboratories engineered a flavor matrix consisting of polydextrose (a fiber) and brown rice syrup (a polysaccharide). One advantage of using polydextrose is that it only contains 1 calorie per gram versus 2 calories for maltitol and 4 calories in simple sugars. The primary benefit of using polydextrose is that it has a near-zero insulimic response meaning that there is no blood sugar spike! As you may know, insulin is a hormone that gets released when blood sugar levels are raised and is responsible for storing excess calories as fat.

The primary benefit of using brown rice syrup is that it has a very unique structure which allows it to be broken down more slowly than simple sugars. The slower it gets broken down, the less of an insulin spike you get. This slower absorption combined with the fiber from polydextrose allows the body to utilize the complex carbohydrates as energy instead of having to store them as fat for later use. In addition, this steady supply of energy from the brown rice may curb hunger between meals and provide steady insulin levels to assist in optimizing fat loss. As you can see the Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar is quite advanced and has every base covered.

Avoid Bars High In Calories and Carbohydrates

The third thing you want to watch out for are bars high in calories and carbohydrates. Remember, you are eating these bars to get some extra protein in your diet - not to get fat! Protein bars are not supposed to be candy bars. You want to find a bar that is roughly 200 calories or less and has less than 30 grams of carbs. Believe it or not, some of the bars on the shelves today have more than 400 calories consisting mainly of sugar and carbs. The idea is to be able to eat 1 or 2 protein bars a day to hold you over without getting fat and without having to run to the bathroom all day. The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar was specifically designed to contain 20 grams of high quality protein, yet only provide 200 calories and only 29 grams of quality carbohydrates with 11 grams of those carbohydrates being fiber!

Avoid Bars High In Saturated and Trans Fat

The fourth thing you want to avoid is a bar high in fat. Some of the bars sold today actually have 10 or more grams of fat with lots of trans fat and/or saturated fat. If you look at the ingredients in these bars you will actually see very damaging oils such as partially hydrogenated oils. The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar contains only 3.5 grams of total fat with no saturated fat or trans fats.

Avoid Bars Containing Poor Quality Proteins

Finally, the fifth thing you want to avoid is a bar containing poor quality proteins. Many of the protein bars contain an inferior protein called "hydrolyzed collagen" or "hydrolyzed gelatin". These types of gelatin proteins are inexpensive to produce and contain incomplete proteins. They are nearly worthless in helping you to maintain and build lean muscle tissue. But technically, they are a "protein". Do you think those other bar manufacturers really care about your body or their own profits when they add these poor quality proteins to their bars?

The idea is to look for a bar that has a high quality protein such as whey protein isolate or milk protein isolate. Remember, in general protein is the most expensive ingredient in the bar. The first place a manufacturer looks to cut costs is in the protein. Most of us would think that if it is called a “protein bar” it would at least contain a high quality source of protein such as whey protein isolate. Many of today’s bars do not even contain protein as the first ingredient listed on the ingredient facts panel! The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar contains an engineered Molecular Matrix Protein containing milk protein isolate, whey protein isolate and calcium casseinate…and yes it is the first ingredient listed. This combination of fast and slow digesting proteins is what your body needs for sustained release of high quality amino acids to maintain a lean, muscular body.

A Bar Containing Essential Fatty Acids Is A Must

The single hottest selling nutritional supplements in the country today are omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids are necessary for normal growth and development. Because the body can't make its own supply of omega-3, these essential fatty acids must be supplied by our diet. A typical diet in the Western World only contains about 10-15% of the omega-3 that the body needs, the remaining requirement must come from other sources. To help achieve a healthier balance, people should increase their intake of fatty fish or take omega-3 dietary supplements to guarantee the health benefits they confer. Other than taking fish oil capsules, there really aren’t too many other supplemental sources of omega 3 fatty acids. Finally, PBL has engineered a bar that tastes great, without any fishy taste whatsoever, and meets the daily needs for essential fatty acids in each bar.

The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar Is An "Engineered Food Bar", Not A Candy Bar

If you are serious about your nutrition, fuel your body at regular intervals of four to six times per day. Yet, we have all had times when it was time to eat and couldn’t get to quality food. Today, more than ever, our busy schedules make it harder to prepare the perfect meal. The frustration of feeling your stomach rumble and your body getting weaker is something many people can’t comprehend. These are the times we wish our food could fit in our pocket and just take a minute to eat with no preparation needed.

Having a nutritional supplement that can give you clean, slow-release carbohydrates and high-biological value protein with minimal fat and sugar would be something that anyone serious about their physique would desire. This is exactly why Performance Biomedical Labs engineered the perfect protein bar. The Pure Omega 3 Protein Bar fits the nutritional profile for anybody serious about their nutrition.

On the other hand Pure Protein bars have Hydrolyzed Collagen as their primary source of protein in their "blend", which is a garbage source of protein. Soy Isolate is in a few locations on the ingredients, which has 3mg of isoflavones per gram and is an inferior protein in terms of completeness and BV as well. Lactitol, is a sugar alchol of lactose...get ready for GI distress on that one. Palm Kernel Oil would certainly be an unhealthy fat. So, my point is in this thread is not taste or grams of protein, but healthy first.

No, I haven't and clearly with the criteria I have it will 1. Push up cost and 2. Make taste more difficult. So it may or may not taste great. I merely posted it as an example and liked their writeup. I am still searching for other products as well.

What are your thoughts on the new Protein Bar from DS? have you checked out it's nutritionals and such and what (if any) ingredients do you find not preferable in it?

That is indeed a solid product.

Here is another good option IMO. Personally my views on soy do not reflect yours(I have posted studies in regards to the gonadal axis and digestions concerns in the other thread), and thus I believe while taste is not the best the xyience xstart bar to be a viable option. It appears to be nicely balanced with essential fats, low-gi carbs, fruit and fruit juice... all good stuff.

There again I don't like the soy protein isolate as the primary protein in the blend. As far as calcium caseinate, it is simply a milk-based casein...I don't know why "it sucks" was stated above. It most certainly is not as great as WPI or as far as casein goes a micellar, but decent nonetheless. Especially compared to Collagen, Soy, etc.

I took an excerpt from this article I found below. We haven't even discussed glycerine, which many of these bars are loaded with too. It is scary how awful most of these bars are for you.

http://www.thinkmuscle.com/ARTICLES/...s-revealed.htm
Protein Bars Revealed
by Rehan Jalali

Protein bars contain carbohydrates as well. Typically the main source is glycrerol (glycerine) which is a trihydric alcohol. Glycerol forms the backbone of triglycerides in the body. It is used in bars to help keep them soft and moist since glycerol is very good at drawing moisture. It also helps sweeten the bar. Although many companies do not list this as a source of carbohydrates, the FDA defines it as a carbohydrate. It has a very low glycemic index so it does not impact blood sugar levels greatly. Interestingly enough, there are ergogenic benefits associated with ingesting glycerol such as increasing the amount of water retained in the body and enhancing hydration (maybe even enhancing vascularity). Bars loaded with glycerol may cause stomach discomfort in some people so unless you want to hit the porcelain throne throughout the day, drink plenty of water with these protein bars. Corn syrup, high fructose corn syrup (dextrose), rice syrup, maltitol, honey (invert sugar), turbinado sugar, sucrose (which is glucose +fructose), crisp rice, and fructose are all used as carbohydrate sources in bars. Fructose is fruit sugar and is added to bars not only to provide a source of carbohydrates but also to sweeten the product as it has a very sweet taste. Fructose is mainly metabolized in the liver and therefore has a lower glycemic index. Consuming high amounts of fructose can lower metabolic rate and cause de-novo lipogenesis (the conversion of sugar into fat) since the liver can only metabolize limited amounts of fructose.

Protein bars also contain fat. The usual fats found in these bars are partially hydrogenated oils, fractionated vegetable oils, palm kernel oil, and peanut butter. A few bars have added essential fatty acids (EFA’s) but it is very difficult to preserve the quality due to their sensitivity to light, heat and oxygen. Most of the fat (especially the saturated fat) found in bars is in the coating. Saturated fats have been linked to many health problems including cardiovascular disease. Partially hydrogenated oils produce trans fatty acids (along with other altered fats) during the hydrogenation process. They are also very detrimental to health and have been known to increase cholesterol and interfere with the livers detoxification system. Hydrogenated oils increase shelf life of products, which is usually 9 months to 1 year for most protein bars. Fractionated oils seem to be better for you. Fractionation is the process of separating an oil into two or more different triglyceride fractions. In other words, it allows weaker oils to be changed into better oils.

These are high in sugar, but mostly from organic honey, which is a great natural source (I'll take it over sugar alcohols, high fructose corn syrup and maltodextrin any day). It has 20g of WPI...not the best bar overall, but simple and as far as "treat" bars this would be high on my list (on paper, I haven't tried it).

I am struggling in my search thus far to find a product that does not have this list:

1. Hydrolyzed Collagen (truly inferior protein...garbage)
2. Soy Protein Isolate (incomplete protein, BV, and isoflavones/phytoestrogens)
3. Glycerine/glycerin (carbs not listed on most bars, GI ditress...it does add sweetness and moisture)
4. Sugar alcohols: maltitol (high GI distress), lactitol (most), erythritol (least GI distress), sorbitol, xylitol
5. High Fructose Corn Syrup, matodextrin (lipogenesis here we come)
6. Palm Kernal Oil, Soybean Oil, hydrogenated oils (trans fats/saturated fat)...often found in the chocolate coating
__________________________________________________ _______________________________
Maybe this doesn't exist and it would be a bad tasting product if it did. It does seem like you need to trade of some for the other and concede. I just don't like conceding.
1. Having WPI/WPC for a protein source,
2. Organic honey, sucralose/splenda, Brown Rice, stevia or Lo Han Fruit for sweetness
3. Oats, nuts, seeds for carbs/fiber
4. I'd rather have enzymes/probiotics over the garbage vitamin/mineral mix they throw in.

I'd like to see the exact nutritional breakdown. the site says it has no artificial sweetners, no trans or hydorgenated oils, oats, peanuts, casein (good for "sustained release") at 20g (80kcals) which is not high for a protein bar and I'd rather have WPI. It has honey, as well as inulin (chickory extract) and 300kcals (220 non-protein kcals)...sounds good. WPI with all the other ingredients has enough of a sustained release. The powder would make sense to use for a nighttime protein and most have said it taste great.

Yes, I do not have the bar or the nutritional facts. I was just going off a little writeup on the site. If that is in it...I am a no-go on that product.

Not big on the vegetable oil, glycerine, glucose and maltitol. I love that Oats is the first ingredient (it would most likely negat the glucose GI effect). Protein is good and white chocolate and real raspberries sounds tasty. Fairly good find. Not perfect, but I bet it does taste good.
