Can't get enough OATS! Brown rice is also excellent. Sweet potato -- complex carbs. Beans -- high fiber + protein.
If you're bulking big, don't be scared of whole grain wheat bread, wheat pasta, and white potato

They speak the truth!
The rule is, stay as natural as possible with your carbs. The more processed they are, the worse they become. So eat brown rice instead of white rice, 100% whole wheat bread instead of white bread, etc.

Good to see you again plik! I whole-heartedly agree about trying to eliminate processed foods. However, the higher GI of white rice is not so bad PWO. Again, if you are bulking, white potato/white rice/even white pasta can make a good insulin pumping addition to the post-workout meal.

Yes, carbs will prevent you from getting lean if you are an easy weight gainer. I have always been an easy weight gainer and there has only been 2 ways that I have been able to control my weight. One way was doing alot of aerobics and eating moderate carbs and the other way was eating very low carbs and doing sprints with no endurance workouts. The only way I could stay muscular and lean was to eat low carb and just do sprints. The aerobics kept my weight down but they also made me soft too, even when I was lifting alot. The summer that I biked 300 miles/week for 14 straight weeks was the worse that I ever looked, even though I was down to 178lbs. Doing alot of aerobics makes your body want to get lighter so it burns the heavier muscle for fuel.
On the other side of the coin, my ex-girlfriend had abs that a female bodybuilder would die for. I used to trace her abs with my finger when she was sleeping just amazed at the muscularity. Now, this girl never worked out one day of her life, let alone did 1 situp or crunch. She also ate the worst diet I have ever seen with loads of fast food and sugary foods, yet she stayed at 110lbs with abs of steel. In fact, 3 days after she had her second kid, she was wearing belly shirts because her abs were rock hard again that fast.
The moral of the story is everyone is different and you have to evaluate yourself to determine how many carbs you can tolerate. Anyone that has been heavy their whole life like me probably should eat under 20gms/day. Others who use to be lean when they were younger but gained some weight in their 30's can probably tolerate more carbs as these people usually just have to cut out the sweet stuff in order to get lean again. That won't work for group 1 as all carbs will have to be cut out in order to get lean, even whole grains and fruits. Finally, we have the people who have been lean their whole life. These bastards can eat as many carbs as they want and always will be able to.
The problems start when the people in the final group are giving the people in group 1 diet advice. That is why C Bass should not be paid attention to. He has been lean pretty much his whole life and has done it on high carb and low carb diets. Why would a heavy person listen to him? What people in group 1 need to do is find a person who has been heavy their whole life and has managed to get lean. These people can give you real and helpful advice because they know what you are going through.

livinonlava! Aloha and mahalo!
I don't worry about GI numbers too much, the reason brown rice is so much better for you is that white rice has lost a lot of its nutrients durring the milling process when the husk (bran layer) was removed and the remaining was polished with glucose and talc (sugar and foot powder). The nutrients that white rice loses include niacin, thiamin, magnesium, zinc, iron and fiber.
So, brown rice is better for you for many reasons.

the most important thing is overall caloric balance. People worry about the difference in glycemic response between white rice & brown rice but that's really a nonissue when you eat carbs as part of a whole meal & not by themselves as fat/protein/fiber blunts the glycemic response

Funny, that people STILL have a hard time with this truth even after the many, many times it's been said. And what is extremely annoying is the fact that someone will talk about GI in a few post from now.Oh well, I quess it will always be that way.

I agree the GI number shouldn't be seen as a "deal breaker" when it comes to choosing which food to eat, but the main reason I avoid white rice and white flour is the fact that the nutrients have been processed out of those foods.
So, regardless of the glycemic response, brown rice has more nutrients than white rice.
