If Squatting is the way to jump higher, How come...

most nba players that jump out of the court, dont have big legs, which lead me to believe theyre not squatting huge amounts of weight. id take a skinny kid over a bodybuilder that squat everyday in a jumping contest anyday of the week

    1. Bodybulders do not squat everyday
    2. bodybuilders lift for SIZE. not athletic ability or jumping height. Two totally different types of training.

jumping has to do with your achilies...the more flexible the higher you go, obviously thats not the only thing but a big part. just what i have read. If you wanna jump higher get jumpsoles, i have them and love them. also box squats are good because you explode after sitting, i use lighter weight, about 55% of my max and do 6x3 sets and get up as fast and as explosive as possible. It seems to be helping, i used to be able to dunk but i blew out my knee and couldnt even touch the rim after i recovered, now I am back to being able to get rim no problem, its only a matter of time b4 I am dunking again.

Sorry, I play on the D-Line and have no use for it, I have extreme need for weights.

Gimme a break I gave you a green rep once, if this is an actual good program I'll be honest with you.

Small legs doesn't imply weak legs.

i can build a car that looks just like a top fuel dragster, but that doesnt mean it will go 330 mph.

first off, most NBA players are at least 6'5". their muscles will naturally be longer giving them less appearance of size. furthermore, something like jumping requires fast twitch musclefibers of decent quality. these dont necessarily mean having big ones. also, a big key to jumping is overall flexibility and large amounts of hip flexion. muscles can be strong, but it doesn't mean they will be flexible. at the same time, just because you can put your foot over your head does not mean you will be able to jump 45 inches. yes weightlifting, stretching, and all kinds of other crap make a difference, but overall, genes are where its at.

hey just curious how tall and heavy (pounds) were you when you were first able to dunk? and now as well?

Im just wondering cuz im same age, 6 and a half inch tall, 180 pounds.... and i can just barely dunk if i sprint like mad... wouldnt be able to do it often in a real bball game...

I was 6 foot and about 180 like you. I could jump flat footed and grab rim no problem with two hands. It took a little bit of effort and it was tough for me to palm the ball but i could dunk in a game on a fast break...what sucks now is i can palm the ball no problem but with my torn acl and bad ankles i cant jump anymore...o well.

The thing is, theres a thing called plyometrics, which is related to explosive strength. These guys' leg muscles act like a cats, being very elastic almost, having a great explosive ability, causing them to be able to jump a little bit higher than most ppl. The other thing that makes them look like they jump super high is that they are tall, so it makes you think they are jumping like 4 feet when they are actually only jumping about 2. Granted, they probably cant squat very much. But their standing long jump is prolly like 10-12 feet.

One thing I suggest to develop explosive leg strength is something I've been doing, and afterwards you can actually jump farther and higher.

    Get a really strong backpack

Load it up to half your body weight or more.

    Jump

    Do Lunges

Step up onto a 1 or 2 foot base

    Jog

Try sprinting. Its brutal on your heart but it makes you faster if you run 10 miles an hour with half your weight on your back.

Get up the stairs as fast as possible. Try to skip steps.

Now be careful, stretch a lot beforehand, and watch out for blowing out your back. It happened to me once a few months ago when I was running up the stairs.

Then after you take off the backpack your legs have a greater spring to them. You can actually jump higher even if they are tired. I dunno thats just me though.

My Backback for HS is 30 Lbs and I have to carry it up stairs 10 times a day. Not to mention the walking from building to building and out to PE.

There's a pretty impressive vertical in the very beginning of this vid.

It's simple; the more force you apply against the ground, the higher you will jump. This is mainly a function of hip extension, so the glutes and hamstrings are the biggest factors. If you can't apply much force, you won't jump high. There's no way around that.
"If ye love wealth better than liberty, the tranquility of servitude better than the animating contest of freedom, go home from us in peace. We ask not your counsels or arms. Crouch down and lick the hands which feed you. May your chains set lightly upon you, and may posterity forget that ye were our countrymen." - Samuel Adams

i think one very overlooked factor in what makes NBA players look like they are gettin more air than a normal person... take for example dwyane wade

dwyane wade is 6'4 3/4 inches with shoes, his armspan is a ridiculous 6'10 or so... this gives alot of NBA players an added boost, every bit helps

but yeh training for strength/power is a lot different than training for size but look at someone like Nate Robinson, built like a brick ****house. his vert is off the scales n his legs would be massif!

    anyway thats enough from me

If you want a more explosive jump try adding in some plyometric exercises a couple of tiems a week. Like Jump Lunges on ground, or jump squates, or even add a step with some risers, and plce one foot on the step while exploding off the front leg, landing with the other legs up, repeat, or squat jump up on step decelerating into squat, squat jump up and off onto ground decelerating into another squat and keep going.

I think your vertical can be worked on but it also is genetic to a degree. I played basketball in pick-up games for fun. I by no means have ever worked on my vertical. I weigh around 215 lbs, 5'9.5" and I can stand flat footed under a rim, jump up and grab it with both hands with ease. In high school, at the same height but around 180 lbs I could dunk with ease and never worked on it.

I am now working with my daughter on her basketball. She doesn't not have a great vertical and I'm also interested in what we can do to help her improve it.

that's the key point there. bodybuilding is about working yourself to a fantastic asthethically pleasing body, it's not about useful strength/athlethic ability.
I got mega-negged for saying something derogatory about Metallica. lol.

u dont get what im saying. i meant that just because u can squat alot of weight dosnt mean u can jump. also i dont understand how u can find a bodybuilder pleasing, theyre bodies are pretty disgusting and i doubt they get as many girls as a skinny cut guy
