    best bodybuilding/strength training books

i used to read muscle mags and stuff but found that actual books written on the subject of strength training are much more informative and give you the knowledge to see through some of the ****ty programs in magazines. i just bought science and practice of strength training by vladmir zatsiorsky from barnes & noble but realized i was way outta my league. i could understand any of its scientific jargon and found it isnt practical at all for the average weight training and bodybuilding enthusist. now i have to return it tomorrow and get store credit of like 50$. i was thinking of buying any of these books: serious strength training by tudor bompa, encyclopedia of muscle and strength by jim stoppani, the new high intensity training by ellington darden, getting stronger by bill pearl, or brother iron sister steel by dave draper.

Which of those should i get. I can probably get two of them. and if you have any other recommendations please share them. appreciate any advice

I like Arnold's encyclopedia of bodybuilding.

You can go to Amazon.com and do a search on 'bodybuilding' or 'work out' to see what the top selling books are. There are also reviews on the majority of the books there. You can also buy used books so you're not spending as much money. Some book are just a few bucks + S & H.

Try going to the bookstore (Borders, or B. Dalton) and look through all of the books that you might have an intertest in from searching amazon.com.

IMHO (In my humble opinion) Most of the old school bodybuilding books are really good, but don't hit on the nutrition info that you need. Most of the recent books that are out have really good info. You'll just have to search to see what you like.

    Good Luck.

P.S. Here's some reps to get you started in the right direction.

Brother Iron, Sister Steel is a great book... also, consider getting the Bill Pearl book, The Keys To the Inner Universe.

Also, you MUST get the following books:

    Dinosaur Training by Brooks Kubik
Mastery Of Hand Strength by John Brookfield

Go over to Bill Hinbern's website and have him send you a free catalog, or you can just browse his website and order from there. Lots of great strength books by the old masters/the strongmen of yesteryear, and the advice that they give is timeless and just as valuable today as it was back then!

Dude hes looking for a bodybuilding/strength book, from what your saying theres no point to having any book at all.

I havent got the starting strength book so i cant really say anything ive just heard its got tonnes of great information in it on strength training and pages full of exercises, techniques and tips along with **** loads of pictures and guides which are all written from a well known top strength coach Mark Rippetoe.

Most of the guys on this site that have the book will probably recomend it and im sure your find loads of people worshipping this guy in the workout programs section, because he knows his **** and writes stuff that works.

    The Authors:-

Mark Rippetoe, CSCS is the owner and general manager of Wichita Falls Athletic Club, CrossFit Wichita Falls and Performance Sports Conditioning.
He has 25 years experience in the fitness industry and 10 years personal experience as a competitive powerlifter. He has coached athletes in barbell and strength sports since 1980. He was in the very first group to sit for the NCSA's Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist exam in 1985, and has been continuously certified since then.
He was certified by USA Weightlifting as a Level III Coach in 1988, and currently holds the Senior Coach certification.
He has coached numerous national level competitors, and many thousands of people interested in improving their health and strength.

    &

    Lon Kilgore, Ph.D.
is a professor of kinesiology at Midwestern State University (USA) where he teaches exercise physiology and anatomy.
He holds a senior faculty appointment in Exercise Science at Warnborough University (UK).
His career as an Olympic-style weightlifter began in 1972 as a means to improve his wrestling performance. His wrestling career ended after high school, but weightlifting continued and he has had many national event podium appearances over his 30 plus years of competitive experience.
His coaching efforts began in 1974 when he took five athletes to the AAU Junior Olympic Nationals and since those early days he has remained active in coaching national and international caliber weightlifters. He also did a three year stint as a NCAA DII strength coach.
He is currently Chair of the Sports Science Committee and a coaching course instructor for USA Weightlifting and a member of the Board of Certification for the American Society of Exercise Physiologists.

You can order it from here, buy it on ebay or something or like you said apathy....get it from a local book store lol.

Arnolds books are extremely good and inspirational to me.

Dinosaur Training definitely has merit, but everytime I read it I end up yelling "SHUT THE **** UP ALREADY" and throwing the book across the room.

I liked Francos nutrition book a lot, but that is hard to find. 2x Mr. O, PhD in nutrition, what else needs to be said.

You could buy Arnold's books and Stuart McRobert's books... and be totally confused.

Some books explain stuff more in depth though then the internet and cover more information along with lots of illustrations step by step.

Plus you dont need an internet connection and to be fixed at a computer to read it all.

That would be liberating. I've been looking for somewhere in Britain that ships Starting Strength but haven't had any luck.

I also heard it not only tells you how to perform the exercises but tells you what to look out for in other peoples technique, basically, how to teach the big 3.

    Yeah i think so.....

Starting Strength is a unique approach to coaching weight training, written by coaches and designed specifically for training beginners.
Learn how to effectively and safely coach the basic core lifts and their programming in an easy to do, step-by-step process.
Featuring the most heavily illustrated exercise chapters in print, Starting Strength shows the reader not only how to teach the lifts, but how to recognize and correct technique errors.
The book features flip animations of each exercise performed correctly, along with practical interpretations of coaching theory, and the anatomical, physiological, and mechanical principles of training. It will help prepare coaches and personal trainers to be more effective strength and conditioning professionals

some reviews from people who own the book:-
    http://www.startingstrength.com/reviews.html

I was thinking about writting to bodybuilding.com and ask them to add it to the books list that you can buy from the online store.
That way we can get it shipped over.
