thats pretty cool for the deadlift though!

I know this is an Arnold thread, but damned if Franco Columbu wasn't the man...the body of a monster with the strength to go with it.
"RAGE's voice echoed eerily off the cave's dark walls. The ruby in his hands dissolved in a blinding red glow, and though RAGE's features were obscured by that uncanny light, I plainly saw him grow into a creature of awesome proportions, with a chest as thick as a mighty oak tree and muscles as big as boulders...a Human JUGGERNAUT!"

A couple of years ago they were showing old strongman competitions from the 70's on some cable channel and I remember being amazed that Arnold and Franco and a couple of other old school BB'ers were the featured athletes...wish I had Tivo back then....

Franco was the man...
Franco Columbu
Franco Columbu (August 7, 1941, Ollolai, Sardinia) is an Italo-American actor and bodybuilder.
Starting out his athletic career as a boxer, Columbu progressed into the sport of powerlifting and later bodybuilding, winning the title of Mr. Olympia in 1976 and 1981. At one time he was considered to be one of the world's strongest men and held a number of powerlifting and weightlifting world records.
Franco Columbu is also famous for being a long time friend of Arnold Schwarzenegger, whom he met in Munich in 1965 and competed against in several international-level bodybuilding competitions. For the Mr. Olympia competitions however, he competed in the under 200 lb (90.7 kg) category, whereas Schwarzenegger was in the over 200 lb category.
In addition to his athletic accomplishments, Columbu has also made intermittent minor forays into acting. Appearing alongside Arnold in Pumping Iron, he has also appeared in cameo roles in Conan the Barbarian, The Terminator, The Running Man and starred in his own films, notably, Berretta's Island.
He holds doctorates in chiropractic and nutrition.

Trivia
In the movie Pumping Iron Columbu is shown to lift an awkwardly parked Triumph car out of its park.
Columbu was the best man at Arnold Schwarzenegger and Maria Shriver's 1986 wedding.
One of Columbu's feats of strength was to blow up a hot water bottle until it burst.
In the Arnold Schwarzenegger film Last Action Hero, the words "A Franco Columbu film" appear on the screen at the beginning of Jack Slater IV (a film within the film) as a tribute to Columbu.
In the opening scenes of Conan the Barbarian, Columbu plays a 'pictish scout', complete with mustache, wig and blue body-paint.
In Terminator, Columbu plays the infiltrating terminator in Reese's flashback/dream in which the picture of Sarah Connor is destroyed by fire.
Columbu competed in the 1977 World's Strongest Man competition and finished fourth, despite not being able to complete all the events having broken his leg in the 'Refrigerator Carry' event.

Hmm ...
I don't mean to be a jerk but that doesn't look like anywhere near 710.
The 3 45s are 135.
If those next plates are 35s (which I doubt, they look more like 25s, but I'll give Arnie the benefit of the doubt) that's another 105.
The smaller ones, it's tough to tell, but looks like there's 6 of them ... 6 tens is 60.
So that's 300 a side, plus 45 for the bar, that's 645.
Unless these are some weird non-standard European weights ... but other than this picture I've never heard a 700ld+ deadlift claimed on behalf of, or by, Arnold himself.Last edited by Doc Iron; 08-27-2006 at 01:03 PM.

The three plates on the inside are 25kg plates.
The three next in are 15kg
The three in from that are 10kg plates
Then there is a 5kg
Then a 2.5kg
And a 20kg bar
Which adds to 320kg or 704lbs
Them add a few lbs for the collars and you have 710lbs.Professional strength and conditioning coach - Rugby Union
