yates and coleman are #1 and 2. I honestly don't care which one you put in front, but they are both undeniably 1 and 2.
Samir Bannout is in a solid 3rd place here. Flex's back was phenominal, but it doesn't compare in overall thickness and width. Great separation and definition, but thickness and width lack as compared to some others. His retardedly small waist and retardedly wide shoulder structure help give the illusion that his back was better than it was. No one will deny Flex's structure was insane, but his back, IN AND OF ITSELF, does not match up to some of the guys that placed ahead of him.

Joel Stubbs, many haven't heard of him but he has one of the best backs of all time.

Just look at that back, amazing thickness and his back muscles are practically hanging to his body right there. You can also see the development of his teres major, another key to developing an awesome lat spread.

The pictures you guys have chosen to represent Flex over the mass monsters just confirms what I've been telling people for a while now: Flex Wheeler has the best back double biceps pose in history, but when it comes to the lat spread, he falls behind Ronnie and Yates too far.
Let's say Flex's back double is a 10. Well, Ronnie and Yates probably both put up 9's. (With Ronnie's as a little better, especially considering Yates' biceps tear.)
Then when they spread it, Ronnie and Yates are both 10's, whereas Flex is like a 7.5-8. You can see where the differential comes from.
The other thing is, with the exception of '93 when he got 2nd, he never really nailed his conditioning from the back like Yates and Ronnie seemed to always do. If someone can post a picture of Flex with striated glutes in another year, I'll stand corrected. If you think I don't have a right to say what I just did: http://forum.bodybuilding.com/showthread.php?t=825057
