Drag Curls
I'm bored so I figured I throw out another newbie style question. I don't really see Drag Curls in anybody's routine, how come? I don't do them either though I'm considering trying them out, but I'd think I'd see them more often considering they are a compound movement are they not? Rear delts and back come in the play, its a two joint movement, and peak contraction forearms are parallel to the floor which is optimal.
And no I'm not talking about dressing in drag and doing curls, I know that joke is gonna get thrown out there too.

I used to do them and saw some fast growth. I like them but don't do them anymore.

The grip is like Yates row yes but you pull the bar just like normal barbell curls.

What is going on in that picture that I'm missing? This looks like a reverse curl to me.

i dont think its a reverse grip, though the pic is hard to tell... i have seen "drag curls" with each type of grip
he's moving the bar up in a straight path (perpindicular to the ground), and to do so, rather than leave his upper arms stationary at his sides and just bending at the elbow, he has to move his upper arms back while he bends the elbow. So its more like he's rubbing the bar along his abs the whole way.

I don't think that's a very good pic to really illustrate the movement. He's starting with a bend in his elbows, and for most people they can use a larger ROM. Essentially like it was explained the bar is dragged across or close to the body, you elbows come back quite a bit from starting position hence why it would be a compound movement. Messing around with it, I feel it in the rear delts quite a bit and slightly in the upper back area. You can use either grip, I'd probably use a supinated grip myself.

I'm not sure if I'm understanding it right, but isnt the ROM of drag curls very similar to that of chins? With the exception of course that drag curls dont hit lats like chins do.

i would imagine it would be similar to chins.
If i had to guess at the differences i would say that drag curls put more emphasis on the bis than chins do and also the overall weight should be less on drag curls then on chins (chins are roughly, but slightly less than, bodyweight).

I think they're probably good, but why do them when you can just do underhand barbell rows? It's basically the same movement, just you can use a bitchload more weight and hammer out your lats at the same time.

I usually wear high heels and fishnets.....
Just kidding.
Drag curls feel like a concentration curl to me in terms of effect. So they would be an adjunct to regular curls for me but not a replacement.

Well I think it hits a lot less back than underhand rows or chins, its primarily a bicep movement, but as I said rear delts and upper back assist. I would never consider it a replacement for any back or rear delt movement, but possibly a replacement for a bicep exercise, either as a primary or as more of a secondary type movement like Defiant1 mentioned.

You need to have a slight forward lean to allow the bar to travel STRAIGHT up. This is a great bicep exercise that peaks at max leverage disadvantage like RippedG says. It is a great stretched movement for the bi's.

No, you misunderstood me. Shoulda been more clear. What i meant was, you're essentially doing the same exercise as underhand rows, just without the lats assissting. So why not just do underhand rows and ALSO hit your lats? Plus you get to use much more weight.

Oh I see sorry, but I guess as a response to that my statement still holds, it would be more of a replacement for a bicep exercise if one uses such a thing.

this is a good ol' movment, from way back....just to know, shows one's age....which is why A-Trainer was so familiar with it! LOL.......
personally, I never cared for it that much, but it does hit the biceps a different way.....
RIPPED: I'm sure, if you do them for a while, you will find a way to get something out of it: I don't think it can hurt: think of it as a learning process.....
Oh, and EVAN: nice info, but asking for Reps is a little cheesy.......

Actually, I invented body drags in my garage gym one day watching my brother cheat real bad with his curls. I had to come up with a better exercise, and I did. I even contacted a writer from Muscle and Fitness, and pitched it to him. He thought it had promise, but after trying them a few days, said it used too much posterior delt. He obviously was doing them wrong.
Only a few months later, I found out in an issue of Ironman magazine that the movement had been developed years earlier by Vince Gironda. That was the first mention of the exercise I had ever seen, and I had been reading M&F magazine for years. At least I was on the right track, and I think mine are a little tighter on technique. Hell, they make my biceps cramp. Does a bicep exercise get better than that?
