I was going to ask this very same question.
I figured it was from a week lower back. When I deadlift by the time my lower back takes over the bar already has momentem from the leg drive. When I try the same weight from the rack it feels like trying to lift a dumptruck.
I was almost 100 pounds lighter on the rack pull then the DL. Now I am only about 30 pounds lighter. Here is what I am doing. Instead of DL every back day. I am doing rack pulls 3 backdays then dead lift on the fourth backday.
I am hoping this increases my DL, I am stuck at 4 plates and fail at the knee. I think next time I will get it.

its not that common but i can be because you are weak at lock out, when you do a normal dead you build up speed to blast through the weak point.
But from the rack you have to start at your weak point from a dead stop therfore have a weaker rack pull than a deadlift.Last edited by Kouta; 07-28-2006 at 02:55 AM.

This could actually be a good thing; it could be exposing that you have less back/hip strength and are doing your deadlifts primarily with your legs.
If you work on doing rack pulls, you might find a very noticable increase in your DL ability, which doesn't happen as much for people who can pull more than they can lift."You can't change the past, but you can change the future."
