Weight lifting being under walking is suprising me a great deal, and makes me think that chart is wrong. Especially when it says "vigorous effort" next to the lifting.

JaeGee, i got that chart from this link...

    http://www.cnn.com/SPECIALS/2006/healthy.bodies/

under the "prevention" section near the bottom theres a link that says "how to strength train correctly" if you click that you will see their definition of weight lifting.

they weight lift with 5 pound dumbells they dont deadlift and squat hundreds of pounds like us. so i think thats the explanation for the issue you raised.

im surprised jump rope burns more calories than running. cause after running im completely exhausted. but then again i suck at jump rope i need to step up my intensity. im gonna go for a hardcore jump rope session when i wake up in the morning.

Defenitely Jumping rope. Thats why so many fighters (MMA, Boxing, etc) can be like 5' 11" at 169 and dont gas out. I'm sure its just their training in general, but the rope helps alot.

Well when you "lift" you do maybe 10 minutes of ACTUAL lifting...think about it. The rest is, well, rest. I am not entirely sure how they compute that though. Is it as if you were squatting for an hour squat? Surely that'd be thousands of calories. But how do they standardize weightlifting if everyone rests different amounts of times, etc?

More their training than anything else. I don't know of any fighters who ropes instead of doing something more intense like running hills apart from training.

Really, how is weight-lifting calculated? I've been trying to figure out a rough estimate of how many calories I burn each time I spend an hour lifting in the gym, because I want to figure this into my daily calorie requirements. Obviously I'm resting properly between sets, so I can't just calculate the calories burned as if I've been lifting without stopping for 60 straight minutes! And what about the increased metabolism for the day or so AFTER the lifting session, while my body is recovering and (hopefully) growing?

About as close as you're going to get, as there are a variety of factors that no one formula can account for.

I actually printed the link just as a way for people to find out about different activities, not so much to answer your particular question...
