Hey guys, I'd like to know if any of you know what actually does make you grow taller before and at puberty. Don't tell me genetics, I know that's what determines it, but what actually makes your bones, organs, and everything else grow.
If you say HGH, then we'd be growing until the day we die and Ronnie Coleman would be 30 feet tall. So what is it?

What makes you grow, height wise?

I know you didn't want to hear this, but genetics do help a lot to determining how tall you will be. The only way to possibly grow taller, is stretching. Like the ones you do in PE classes. If you stretch out you back and legs you migh grow nearly a inch, but I am not a doctor. Also, sit at a upright position, don't lean foward.

I just want to know what makes you taller. But if what WCC says is right, then if someone were to inject HGH into someone whos growth plates haven't closed, then they could just keep on growing.

It's definitely HGH, or more so, the rate at which your body produces it. The reason you're around the same height as your parents is because you inherited their genes which signify the levels of HGH to be produced during your lifetime.
Always God first, always.

any difference it would have on height would be minimal. if these exercises really did release enough GH to make you grow taller, teen bodybuilders would all be giants.
from my experience, squats make me shorter temporarily. after doing a few sets of heavy squats, i always feel shorter.

the difference is insignificant really; but 10RM leg presses do cause slightly more release of GH than 25RM squats (GH levels in the leg press peak at a 10RM workload; GH levels in the squat peak at a 25RM workload):

so you can't judge how good an exercise is by its effect on GH levels. if you could, leg presses would be the best exercise. they're good, but definately not the best.
as for squats vs. deadlifts, don't compare them please. that's like comparing bench press to bent-over barbell rows. they're both extremely good exercises, but their focus is on different muscle groups.
squats work the legs better than deadlifts, but deadlifts work the back a lot better.
squats > deadlifts for legs, but deadlifts > squats for elsewhere.
comparing the two is just stupid.

8 foot 5 inch man the article is about
It says :
His growth spurt began at age 14 after a brain operation apparently stimulated the overproduction of growth hormone.
But you need the growth hormone to get to your bone cells, it would just make you taller subcutaneously. And the pituitary gland slowly stops the growth hormone releasing which is why anti-aging clinics prescribe GH, and old people get old. It's like the fountain of youth.Last edited by MattEagan; 03-27-2008 at 05:32 PM.
