What is the best type of footwear for atg-style squats?
Barefoot
Flat soled shoe
Shoe with a higher heel
I'm wondering because I tend to lean forward to much on the way up and it moves the bar from over my heels to over my toes. So what should I go with?
I usually lift barefoot, but I tried a running type shoe today, and I felt it helped me keep a more upright posture. I'm just not sure that it is good for the knees?
thanks

I wear chucks for all squating, be it ass to grass or wide stance. And yes, I do have running shoes and tried them out, but I like the chuck taylors a lot better.

Heel or no heel all depends on personal preference. I squat fairly wide but not super wide, and I use flat shoes. I also have a pair of Crain squat shoes that I like but I've been trying to wean myself off of them and onto the flat soles because I like that feel better.
Weight transferring to your toes is a form problem, not a shoe problem.
Do NOT wear cross trainers, running shoes, or basketball shoes that have cushioned soles. They are not stable enough and the last thing you want is your foot moving from side to side under a heavy weight.

I mostly just wear tennis shoes, but I also some old sketchers that were part of my old high school unifrom and I can go real low with those. For some reason I seem to squat really well in beach shoes, I don't know but they feel good. Adidas seem like a good investment, especially since I'm more interested in Olympic Squats than Power Squats, but dammit they're expensive!
Most people advice being able to squat ATG WITHOUt any heel support when learning, but as the weights get heavier I suppose a slightly heeled shoe is good for olympic squats, you don't really need any of that for power style since the wide stance of the power squat takes the necessity of the heel away.'Prior to the Department of Education, there was no illiteracy'
