I don't know enough of the science to say whether or not it's possible, however, I'm not going to waste my time trying to find out.
The way I think of it, the muscle has a genetically determined shape. Whether you build on it quickly by heavy weight training, or slowly, with lighter weight training, it's going to end up the same shape. I think "toning" is a word that girls invented, for when they spend years on a treadmill, lower their BF% loads, and then do a set of 50 dumbell curls, then notice how much better their arms look all of a sudden.

If you get someone who hasn't exercised in years, whose muscles have started to er... sag. If they did a bit of resistance training, low intensity, they WOULD notice their muscles tightening and becoming harder, without necessarily gaining inches, right? Reckon that would class as toning?

Exactly. So, if your gonna do concentration curls and leg extensions to "shape" your biceps and quads, think again."I do not agree with a word you say but I will defend to the death your right to say it." Voltaire
