Only if the "shape" you're going for is "small."

There is no such thing as toning. The only way to get shape is to make them bigger and have a lower BF.

Exactly. So, if your gonna do concentration curls and leg extensions to "shape" your biceps and quads, think again.

I don't know enough of the science to say whether or not it's possible, however, I'm not going to waste my time trying to find out.
The way I think of it, the muscle has a genetically determined shape. Whether you build on it quickly by heavy weight training, or slowly, with lighter weight training, it's going to end up the same shape. I think "toning" is a word that girls invented, for when they spend years on a treadmill, lower their BF% loads, and then do a set of 50 dumbell curls, then notice how much better their arms look all of a sudden.

If you get someone who hasn't exercised in years, whose muscles have started to er... sag. If they did a bit of resistance training, low intensity, they WOULD notice their muscles tightening and becoming harder, without necessarily gaining inches, right? Reckon that would class as toning?

I still don't understand why concentration curls are so bad. Aren't they basically just like a preacher curl?

It's the same thing as using the flat side of a precher curl also known as a spider curl.

I didn't say they were bad. All I said was that if you were doing them for the sole purpose that you thought they were gonna give your biceps a great peak, then you should think again because they won't. These aren't a bad excercise though.
