I will be looking for a new rifle here pretty quick, the area I hunt are Grizzly infested. I want a rifle that is good all round, Moose Elk Caribou etc. Any suggestions?

Hmmmm.

Probably want to go with .300 win mag. Savage makes a package gun in .300 win mag for like $350.

They also sell that in .338, which may not be a bad choice, but it'll be too much gun for smaller animals.

.300 win mag seems to be a good one, although .308 should work, .300 win mag will be "just right".

Thanks Nuggz, I have a 308 now but the bears up where we go hunting are pretty big,when I get some pics when I go back to work I will post them. I was looking at a 300 ultra mag, any thoughts on this?

This is a bad ass rifle. The Remington Model 700 Custom BDL .300 Ultra mag. This baby is got some power! It shoots a 180 grain bullet around 4000 fps! The .300 Ultra Mag for Remington will out perform the .300 Win or the .300 Wetherby!

Forgot to metion. Remington's also got the 7mm, .338, .375 Ultra Mags. If you think the .375 H&H is big, well the .375 Ultra Mag is bigger, faster and flatter shottin'. I would say the .300, .338, and .375 Ultra's would take down a Grizzly no problem. But, just to be safe, I would get the .375. You don't want to wound a Grizzly, and piss it off.

Thanks King & Nuggz, I will probably go with the 300 UM. I am going into some premoe Moose area, will get some pics and post them.Sounds like the Father in Law wants to go Elk hunting around the Profit River area Northern British Columbia, should be a good time.

My .300 Ultra Mag kicks like a damn mule. You shoot that thing anymore than 10 times you start to twitch. You wanna put it down. When I first got it I shot it 11 times to sight it in, and damn my shoulder was feelin' it. If a rifle can out perform a Wetherby it has to have some balls. Wetherby's were meant to be the biggest and baddest huntin' catringes around. They were until in 1999 when Remington introduced the Ultra Mags.

I got a Nikon Buckmaster scope mounted on that. It's nice!

I talked to someone who's friend made two perfect shots with a .300 on a grizzly, two perfect killzone shots. And the bear ran 700 yards before it dropped.

Grizzlies aint nothing to play with, you gonna need to make a good shot and then dont expect him to drop right away if its attacking you (small chance that happens).

Dont ever hunt emm alone.

I prolly wouldnt hunt in a grizzly infested area alone anyways.

Lmao speaking of a 45-70. Theres this old man that goes hunting down where I go, Thats what he deer hunts with. Every year I've seen him get a deer. And every year he's ruined the front quarters.

Damn, the 45-70 was made for the old wester days, I think. They hunted buffuloes with 'em. I shoots one hell of a bullet, like 500 grain. Not a long range rifle, but it will fu*ck some **** up with in 100 yards. That's a little big for a deer.

Yea the guys an idiot but he's an old guy so I guess he's set in his ways. It's an old single shot iron sights. The bullet always goes clean through both sides. There was a guy this year with a Full Auto SKS. Lol we told him something get shot up at our camp, he was gonna get a rude awakeing when we found him. All crazy people where we go.

Yea but the guy said he had a ffl class 3 so.... But yea I was gonna confert are 10/22. But i bought this lil trigger gaurd thing that basically makes it fully auto a few years back. Works pretty well with the 50 round mag for blinking around. Last year one of the sides we go hunting on was all muzzle loader. Lol I took my first buck with a muzzle loader that wasent mine and had never been shot before.

A western style 45-70 with open sites can make hits at 1000 yards. Believe it or not, its been done. I forgot the target size it was hitting, but for open sights at 1000 yards anything is damn good.

I think the target was a circle eithers 4 feet or 6 feet. The guy who did it could do it repeatedly on demand.

Damn! The reason the 45-70 is not that flat shootin' is because it shoots such a heavy bullet. But, if someone knows how high to aim and all that, they could be damn good with it at long ranges.

Hell yes, he used a single shot style with a tango peep site ( it pops up off the buttstock). See pic below of the sights, they have no magnifications but notice how they can be adjusted for range?





A 45-70 is deffanantly somewhere on my list of guns I want

I have .30-06 with 180 grain nosslers, works just fine for MOST North American game. I also carry a Ruger SRH in .454 Casull with 300 grain hardcast bullets, to take care of the rest.

I also have a 30-06 as my main big game rifle.
Its a great caliber for where I hunt, actually im 100% confident in it. No grizzlies around here though, but I'd still use it to hunt them since I dont have a larger caliber rifle yet.

A 30-06 can get 2950 fps with a 190grain SMK round. Nearly as good as the .300winmag.

Northern British Columbia, the thing about hunting Grizzly is it should be for more than just the hide or because they look neat, they are a fantastic Animal. We have a sow and 3 cubs hanging around where I work at this time.
