How come some people tell me that most AVERAGE guys can only bench 135lbs? Couldn't they do more? I always found this odd that the average is just 135lbs. I guess I'm a bit above average then huh? I knew this guy who was pretty big, kinda fat, but not overly fat just pretty chunky. He would only bench like 120lbs. So I'm thinking how many people in this world actually bench over 135lbs for full reps (with ease)??? I know I'll probably get flamed for typing this, but besides really buff dudes and a few genetic freaks (small powerlifters) I've rarely seen any guy (average sized, even kinda ripped) bench over 135lbs in the gym. I've seen some bodybuilders who've been experienced in the sport for many years, and yes they are lifting big numbers...but the newbies and even a few 1-2 year gym goers are hardly ever lifting impressive numbers on anything! Maybe it was a weak gym, or maybe all the stronger guys are hiding lol, but I'm not lying when I say this. Is 135lbs average for bench press? I can press w/free weights atleast 155lbs...which is very weak, but I'm finally getting more serious about lifting so I'll be improving hopefully! The sad part is I'm close to 180lbs here so thats very weak for a guy my size. I then thought about my genetics and how I was designed (by God!) my left pectoral muscle is almost missing its so underdeveloped, my lats and shoulders lack strength, and theres a slew of other factors playing in on this. So I've come to the conclusion that most average lifters are ethier A. lying about their stats, or B. just don't care what they lift numbers wise. I care, but I don't see the need to compete with others in the gym. If a guy is lifting 30lbs more then me on bench I don't get discouraged. If someone's lifting alot less then I don't laugh at them or feel good about myself. What about you?

gotta take into consideration the amount of ppl who dont lift weights or perform activities involving strength... theres a lot more ppl that can bench no more than 100lbs in the world than those that bench no less than 200

Rarely when someone first starts working out will they be able to bench 135lbs.
Who cares anyway dont worry about dumb **** like this.Spike92 is 15.
^ place this in your sig to remind the world that Spike92 is indeed 15 and will never be anything other than 15.

I predict that this will be one of those posts that everybody reposts in response to every single thread, like the "Are you aware that some people have a medical condition" fad.
If you actually listen to what I say, you're freakin' stupid and should be shot.
Most people say that having good abs is 90% diet. I say it's 90% lighting lol

Yea,
one of my friends back during senior year tried to bench press for the first time basically. He was like 6'0 170 pounds....he couldnt get 100 on the bench
another friend who played baseball in high school, didnt lift tho, could max at 145.
those are just 2 friends off the top of my head...so i would image around 135 is the average.2002 Member. Jelly?

135 is the bar and 2 45's (one on each side) I could not lift that when I started working out, but then I was a weak fat so and so.... now I can lift more than my what I think should be my ideal body weight.
I bet that the average guy can bench 135 cus average takes in to account those that work out and stay somewhat fit, those that have physicaly demanding jobs and the couch potatos the have office jobs.

you have to take into account how many dont go near a gym, and then take into account those that go to a gym often dont go to lift heavy weights, and finally you must realise real world strength doesnt really translate to a huge bench press - for example a guy i used to work with on my parent's construction site wouldn't have got near me on a bench pess, but he could stack bricks or shovel earth longer and harder than anyone on this forum. not many people go for the heaviest they can lift
i use the rule of thumb that if you can bench 200lbs as far as the average person goes you are seriously strongSoon to be updated:

most guys in highschool.. the max bench is around 135.. the 45s.. occasionally we have the few who hit the 45s 3-4 times. 15 times for me =)

I believe it. Most guys in my gym who are there just to get "fit" put the big boy plates on there and start lifting without ever upping the weight. I think they set a goal for themselves and leave it.

ok i found it, prepare for figures:
Pounds the average 175-pound man (aka : average weight, average height is 5'9 1/2) can bench-press one time:
Age..... Lb
20-29...180
30-39...158
40-49...143
50-59...128
60-69...116
ok another study says in the best shape of your life 135lbs
155-190 is average for 'professional firefighter standards' >270 is excellent.
According to a study 50% of men in their twenties are able to squat over 185 lbs and 10% over 250 lbs. For benchpress the corresponding figures are 135 lbs and 170 lbs and for deadlift 210 lbs and 245 lbs.
bench press (max) = 135 - 185 lbs.
Rough pattern emerging.Last edited by RiK; 06-22-2006 at 12:19 PM.

cutting
Thats why i hate cutting . I know the bottom line is to lift for yourself but Some people analyze you in the gym by your progress in weight pushed or lifted. But alot of them have no idea that a person could be cutting or whatever. On my heavy upper body day ill bench 205 and then on a light day ill just do 135.
I dunno if any of you have gone through this but its frigign annoying being so fat that you're constantly cutting (i dropped from 300 to 200 in about 2 years) (with a few cheats of course). You never get the chance to blow someone thin out of the water. I just cant wait till im downt to 185 then i get to push the big weights. (although 205 has been dubbed a big bench)

when I first started I could barely do 95 for 8 reps on the first set and had to have assitance on the rest of the sets@95.

I started at 65-70 for 5 reps. Now I can do 130 after 6 months, but yea I think the average 18 year old could do maybe 120 or so. Depends really.
