There are times when I grunt loudly. But only at max weights. Heres a tip, if you are going to be loud make sure you are moving the kind of poundage that will make people forgiving of your loudness. Not many people forgive someone screaming while he bangs out that last squat with 135.

^exactly. It really depends on the person and the environment. There are people in glitzy gyms shreiking as they curl 15 pound dumbells just for the 'chicks' attention.Such would be a nuisance especially in the warm and fuzzy spas they these days pass off as "gyms".But if a person is going heavy, and it's a genuine grunt of sorts then I fail to see why anyone should feel offended. It's perfectly alright to do that. You should appreciate the effort instead.
My personal observation is that mostly the people who know that they can never be capable of lifting that kind of weight themselves whether they have to yell or not are generally the first ones to crib bout it.

I think the only time it's appropriate is when you can't hold it back, it just happens. And I don't mean screaming, there's no place for that unless you're in a powerlifting meet, maybe going for a world record.

I've been guilty of that; but in my defense, it's usually with a 400+ squat or 1000+ leg press...

That's what I'm talking about: it's near impossible to lift those kinds of poundages and not make a sound, but that's way different than screaming like a lunatic.

there's no excuse for screaming loudly.
i once squatted 400lbs. i didn't scream or yell or anything - i was just breathing very heavily. i let out a couple of grunts, but they certainly weren't loud. only my friends, who were standing around me, heard it.
heavy, laboured breathing and one or two quiet grunts are acceptable.

the most you'll ever hear from me is some heavy breathing. and some of the weights i lift are very heavy e.g. the 400lbs squat i did. people who actually scream when they lift weights must either be attention seekers (most likely), mentally challenged (unlikely), or in extreme pain (in which case stop, because you should never feel extreme pain during an exercise).

It pi$$es me the f%^k off frankly If I can hear you grunting and shouting in the gym, then you need to shut the hell up. I usually have the volume on my MP3 player cranked way up, that way I can concentrate, focus and ignore the latte-and-wine-cooler crowd doing their butt-blasters.

Its always either some little skinny punk type guy who flexes nonstop in the mirror, but takes 10 minute breaks in between sets, or some super-fat guy who walks around trying to look buck, flexing his fatass arms like he's swoll or something.

I can understand if someone is doing a ridiculous amount of weight, but thats never been the case, usually the guys who workout the hardest are the most considerate, respectful and the least likely to make odd grunting noises.
Its just a bunch of f%^ing attention whores that mix up the concept of making progressively louder and louder noises with actually working out hard in the gym.
Russell Wilson, the first QB in NFL history to throw a game-winning interception.

"So you got fired again eh?" "Yeah, they always freak out when you leave the scene of an accident."

Spiders are like offensive linemen, the best ones do their job and you never notice them.

An obvious example of New Math.

Ever seen someone doing a bicep "body" curl, swinging the dumbell in the air, their whole body tensed up, throwing their back, legs, shoulders and everything else but the kitchen sink into it, all while letting out a ridiculous groan. Just one more oddly stupid thing I see people frequently doing at the gym.

I have to admit that when I first started lifting, I was a skinny little guy who made a lot of noise. I think I understand what that was all about. The truth is that I was really intimidated by these big guys in the gym, and I was looking for a little respect by trying to let everyone know how hard I was working. I just didn't know how to act in the gym.

    What about...

A gym that has iron dumbells without the rubber protection that these guys slam/drop to floor and makes an annoying noise, worse then the grunting, I think. Actually, it really kills the ears. What really gets me is, that these guys have enough muscle to lift these heavy dumbells, but can't somewhat gently set them down. WTF

I don't care if someones grunting and screaming repping out squats of 500.

What I do mind is kids screaming with their ipods on, ez curling 30 pounds.

    Hmmm, interesting comments here.

I am, by absolutely no means, one of the flexing look-at-me types. Never talk to anyone, my phone goes off, my ipod goes on. But I can't help but groan a bit when I'm pushing close to 1RM on the big moves. I don't think about it, I just do it. To the guy who said it doesn't make you stronger - well, breathing correctly does, and groaning is just an extension of that, same as a fighter expelling air as they punch. And I have no problems when the guy with the skinny legs groans while squatting my warm up weight, cause he may be putting in just as much as me.

Actually yelling and screaming at a public gym is a bit much though.

They usualy look ridiculous. I mean sure if you're REALY pushing it but I get the weirdest guys on my gym. One grunts on every single rep on every single set. He even grunts doing crunches and triceps pushdowns...Other goes into the gym, takes his shirt off and does nothing but push ups, crunches and jumping rope - and he only actualy starts doing it when someone looks at him. Talk about attention whores.

Honostly I'd rather go to a gym with all iron weights and a bunch of yellers then a fluff type gym with plastic rubbery weights.

At my gym they still have those iron dumbells and I love when they slam down, I've been to places with all the new fancy rubber/machine crap and I just can't stand it.

I don't understand why so many people get intimidated and all that blahh blah by people, Who cares just have a good time.

I simply don’t understand why people don’t scream, or have afraid of scream, scream can give you that extra motivation, that extra impulse to finish the set. I think you need to use all your weapons to finish the set with maximum straight, and scream are one of that weapons. I simply don’t care what others people thinking…

    Props

Theres definately a consistant pattern with screamers...Its kinda like a mathmatical formula

How Small They Are x How Bad There Form Is = How Annoying The Scream Is

Ill let a loud "grunt" out every so often, but my screaming days are over. Im concentrating on the weight, not acting like a douche for attention.
