Those are great if you dont go all the way down so your abs stay flexed the whole time. Put some weights on your chest and go down halfway and then crunch up. Its a little tough on the back but really kills your abs.

Focus on keepinf your chin close to your chest, it helps with the back.

They'll kill your back if you start your sit-up/crunch with your back arched. Make sure you flatten your back on the bench before crunching, and as you crunch up make sure you focus on "curling" forward and bringing your ribs to your pelvis.

I put the decline bench on as much of an incline as it can go. People at my gym say it hurts their back and it did a little for me when I first started it but now it doesn't hurt a single bit. I do crunches on them more than situps cause the situps work your hip flexors a lot while crunches are more focused on your abs.

Situps your back stays straight but crunches you try to touch your face to your stomach.

The prime movers in a situp are the hip flexors, with the abdominals providing stabilization.

The prime mover in a crunch is the rectus abdominis.

So for total core development situps are good, for developing the abs there are better uses of time.
