Talking lavalint's journal

So I've been lurking on bb.com for a week or two now and I think it's time I started something. I've been at it about a week or two now and I have started to notice a bit of muscleyness. Not really a word, but you get my point. I've cleaned up my diet a bunch and started using fitday.com.

I'm 19, 5'7" or 8" (I really don't know), 166 lbs. on a good day, dunno my bf%.
I'm hoping to lose my luuuurve handles and get buff.

So far my diet is:

Breakfast: smoothie w/ 1% milk, non fat yogurt, banana, frozen berries, soy protein

Snack: some fruit of some sort

Lunch: chicken, rice, salad or Slim-Fast drink

Snack: some other fruit or something light

Dinner: again chicken (or some other type of meat), rice or potato, and salad

Snack: cottage cheese and fruit, or another smoothie with milk, yogurt, banana, sometimes more soy protein

Then for the exercise part of things: (I usually do this before breakie but I dunno if that's good or not?)

Mon, Wed, Fri is cardio. 20 min of jogging/walking, right now I'm up to 90 sec jog, 60 sec walk, repeated 6 times.

Tue, Thu, Sat is weights and stuff. I use my dad's bowflex until I get into things more, then maybe I'll go to the uni gym or something. I usually do the 20 min better body workout which is an all round body thing. Then I do extra ab stuff because I have issues with fat in that area.

Sun I take off and relax. But I still try and stick to the good ol' diet.

One week into it and I don't crave junk food very much. I've taught my dad how to grocery shop for healthy stuff and it's all going well. But we'll see what happens I have a tendency to get all gung-ho about things, and then give up.

Yeah the intervals are interesting. I went today for the first time with 90 jog/60 walk and almost died, but I was going uphill...ooops. I should just stick to the track. But I'm still gonna hang in there, no pain no gain right?

Yaaaay a new journal! When I was your age I started the jog/walk interval thing, 5 years passed with consistent training, and ran a 1/2 marathon. Goes to show you consistency is what its all about. Lookin' forward to following your journey!

As an afterthought, I'll add some of my goals:

In about a month I'm going on a trip to visit my sister and the last part of my trip I'm taking part in a charity golf tourney and going white water rafting. I want to be in somewhat better shape for that. (Also because my ex lives there and I want to be like "Look at me. See what you're missing!"

Muahaha.

So yeah I want a nice figure that I am acutally proud of showing off rather than always trying to hide. And basically I want to be hot and get lots of attention from boys. That last one may or may not be true. What can I say, I'm a wee bit shallow.

White water rafting! That sounds awesome! Im a bit scared of water deeper than the swimming pool, but a girl can dream right! You will have a blast! Getting "hotness revenge" on the X is ALWAYS fabalous! Thanks for all the encouragement everyone!

Today started out a bit rough. I woke up just in time to make it to the doctor's office so I can get my prescription (for Accutane). Then he noticed my eye that's been bloodshot for a good two weeks now. And now I have to head off to the eye specialist at the hospital at 1. So I haven't worked out this morning yet. I just had my morning smoothie at 11 am. So my day is kinda off now. But I'll get it back.

Yes ma'am. Almost all my life.

And here's an update on my day: Didn't eat for 4 hours because I had to wait at the hospital for an hour and a half for the eye doctor to see me. Turns out the problem is my acne rosacia (sp?). It has this toxin in it that can get in the eye and bugger it up. So I have drops and I'm good to go. Still haven't worked out yet...

That's hilarious. How do you like it?? I used to live in Richmond, but, Uvic, you know?!?! Are you going to OUC?? I was looking at UNBC, and uh, they've got this like, warning that you can't feed the bears....yeah, that was it.

I'd have to say you should cut yourself some slack about working out today. You haven't had the chance to properly fuel yourself, and you probably should take care of that eye problem, first....

BTW, why are you taking soy protein??

I'm going to UNBC. Maybe I'll just do some chrunches or something. I should be going out soon so I prolly won't have time to do my regular thing.

The soy protein is so I can get more protein in my diet. I just take it to balance everything out.

So I just weighed myself and I've lost 2 lbs. in about 3ish days. I'm super excited. I have also noticed that my stomach is getting smaller. So right now I'm off to do my weights and junk.

I'm not feeling so hot right now. I'm kinda just eating whatever I want. Sure it's healthy, but I feel like I'm not doing enough! I'm still exercising and everything but my diet is falling apart, I think. I've been usuing nutridiary.com and I've been eating around 1500 cals a day. Give or take a couple hun. But I feel like I'm letting myself eat junk food as long as I stay within those calories. I mean sure if I stay in the calories I'll lose weight. But I also feel like I should be eating super healthily. I dunno. I think I need to find some inspiration again.

The jogging is getting a bit easier now that I'm doing 90 sec jog/60 sec walk. But it's still hard, so I think I'm going to keep doing 90/60 next week. Then I'll increase to 3 min jog. Tomorrow is weight day! I think I'm going to start incorporating some other exercises into the mix along with the Bowflex. Maybe try some squats or something. I dunno, I still feel like a dumbass when it comes to weight and what I should be doing. I think I need to find my groove or something.

So I feel like I'm getting back on track. I stupidly thought that last week I had to do 90 sec jog/60 sec walk. Turns out it should have been 90 jog/2 min walk. That's why it was so hard. So this week I'm up to 90 jog/90 walk, then 3 min jog/3min walk, repeated twice. It felt good. I pushed myself to make it to 3 min. But it wasn't too hard.

Today I'm feeling good diet wise. I had my smoothie about two hours before running. Then when I got back, I had some bbq chicken (no bbq sauce, just spices), rice, and salad. And yesterday I decided not to have a chocolate bar...go me!

Anywhoodles, I am out as I have to get ready for work.

Oh blah!

So now I really feel like I'm falling off the wagon here. For a reason I'd rather not reveal, I've been feeling down lately so I'm kinda not really into getting in shape. AahhH! I've been exercising and everything (totally almost died on the run on Wed. NOTE TO SELF: don't eat before running) but my diet is kinda not good. This is basically what I've been eating:

Breakie: smoothie w/ yogurt, milk, banana, frozen berries, and protein
Lunch: slim fast
Snack: clif bar
Dinner: salad of some sort, sometimes with chicken, always with dressing
Snack: cottage cheese, sometimes with toast, sometimes with dates

Can anyone give me advice on how I can improve my diet?

On the exercising front, I won a draw for a 5 day pass to the women's gym in my town (thanks to my thoughtful coworker who put my name in) and so I'll be using that. And I'm thinking of actually getting a membership to the gym because it's free for the summer and about $40 CDN every month after that. I don't think it's too bad. I'd like to get a personal trainer to help me as well. Other than that I've been trying to find a balance with the weights. I found the Bowflex isn't really working for me. It's kinda awkward. So I've been using free weights and the swiss ball. But I think I need more direction on what to do, proper form, etc. Hence the wanting of a personal trainer.

I am determined to get in awesome shape! I really don't want to give up on this but I feel like I'm hanging by a string or I'm lost in a maze. Gahh! How do you all keep on track? Do you have to make a special effort, or is it one of those things that becomes habit and you can't give up?

EDIT: So I took some pictures of myself just so I can keep track of my progress. And it just so happens both my cameras batteries are dying so I can't transfer the pics. Yay! I'll get them as soon as I can...

I think, hun, you are being too hard on yourself. I think your pic looks Great! (and what most of us here wouldn't do for 'big boobs'! haha)

I am going to try some suggestions for your diet.

meal 1: eggs and w/w toast, or veggies
meal 2: (preferably PWO) 8 oz lf plain yogurt, 1- 1.5 scoop protien, and EITHER banana OR berries, only 1 serving.
meal 3: 5 oz chicken, lean beef or fish, 1-2 C veggies (like broccoli or spinnach), 1/2 C Brown Rice
meal 4: 3 C salad greens (endive, spinnach, romaine, escarole..), 1/2 small tomato, 5 oz lean meat of some sort, 1-2 tsp olive oil, balsamic vinager to taste.
meal 5: 3/4C FF cottage cheese, 1.5TBSP natty PB, 1tsp splenda

You can add a meal 6 or even 7 if you are hungry, but the 'meal 5' outlined, should be your pre-bed meal. It will hold you over, through your fasted night.

Thanks for the suggestions. I shall def try them out. Although I still need to work on it. I don't think I'm getting enough veg.

Today went something like this:

10.00 am: Usual smoothie.
12.00 pm: Workout at gym. Went well. I'm up to jogging 5 min. but the treadmill is easier than going around the neighbourhood.
1.00 pm: Rice and tuna. Should have added some veg in there.
4.00 pm: Slim fast.
7.00 pm: Cottage cheese, banana, and PB.
9.00 pm: Major cravings for junk food! Had toast with PB and cherries.

So far I don't feel too bad today, but my diet still has me feeling like I'm not making any progress. (May be some PMS rearing it's ugly head.) I really feel like I'm not eating well enough. To add on to that, I'm not getting up as early as I want to and it feels like the day is shot even if I get up at 9.00 am. As far as working out goes, I'm getting a personal trainer when I get back from holidays to help me with weights.

I also go to a women's gym... blahhh... I'm warning you they are chatty!!!! Hehhe but it was a good place for me to start though, very non-intimidating.

Wow. This eating healthy thing is paying off, not only for me, but for my father as well. I finally decided to put my foot down and stop him from buying junk food at the grocery store. He now knows that he has to buy healthy food when I'm not with him and he does! So far he's told me that his jeans do up easier and his belt is on the smallest hole. I'm so proud of him!

Anyways. So far I've taken n8s_ltl_buff1's suggestions (thanks again!) and I'm feeling a bit better about what I'm eating. I'm not so worried about if it's healthy or just junk food in disguise that's out to sabotage all my efforts! I know I have to add another meal in there though. I woke up at 7.00 am today (YES!!) and had my eggs and toast. After working out I had my smoothie. I just finished some chicken, rice, and spinach. Now I have to get food ready for work...and figure out something that I can eat in the car driving to work. Any suggestions?

Usually I have a slim fast but I'm starting to think that it's hindering my progress.

Today was an excellent day dietwise. Exercisewise, meh...

Meal 1: two hard boiled eggs, 1 piece whole wheat toast
Meal 2: smoothie (yogurt, strawberries, whey protein)
Meal 3: chicken breast, white rice, spinach
Meal 4: slim fast (couldn't think of what else to eat)
Meal 5: tuna, tomato, spinach, little bit of dressing
Meal 6: cottage cheese, PB

I really hate the fact that I'm pretty much dependent on slim fast for my 3.00 pm meal just because it's when I begin my shift and it's easy to grab one and drink it in the car. I want to find something better than that. But I have no idea. Hmmmm.

I think I also need a better plan for my weights. Weight day for me consists of rolling around on the Swiss ball, bicep curls, tricep thingies (the one with the weight behind the head), bench press with dumbells, and crunches. The problem is I only have dumbells and am totally clueless when it comes to weights. After my vacation I'm going to the Y and getting a membership. It's better than the women's gym because 1) it's cheaper 2) it's co-ed 3) I hear there's cute guys that workout on Sundays. When I sign up someone will do all the measuring and stuff and then get me on a plan. But that's not until July 11th-ish so until then I'm still clueless. Bahh!

Yeah, the slim fast is probably not the BEST choice, but dont beat yourself up about it! I just think they lack enough protien for my taste.
Do you have a container with a lid (for drinking)?
An MRP is always the easiest in the car, so maybe you could use the same whey you do for your smoothie, blend it up with 1C skim milk, and a Tbsp. of natty peanut butter! (THAT is sooooo tasty!)
I used to buy both vanilla and chocolate whey ONLY for that reason. Chocolate whey, milk, and pb! mmmm! it's like a liquid Reese's PB cup!!!!!!

By the way, your diet looked AWESOME!!! And also congratulations on your Father and his accomplishments! I wish I still lived at home, so I could get my dad into a healthier lifestyle. He has Hepatitis C, and he is QUITE overweight. I just worry about him SOOOO much, ya know!? I am still just a daddy's girl, but unfortunatly I am in Italy, and he is in Illinois.
Oh well, hopefully he will be okay.

Do you have access to health and workout magazines? I will reccomend Fitness-RX for women. Muscle and Fitness hers, regular Muscle and Fitness (the mens version.) Oxygen (not the Oprah version) is okay, but it has ALOT of unnecesary ads in my opinion, however, they always feature pics from the latest shows, and they have EXCELLENT recipes!! (hence, MY subscription!)
All those mags have routines that you can do at home, tucked right there in with the other stuff. I've been religious about working out for 3 years, and I still get them for new ideas.
I also get the original Fitness magazine (you know, with the REALLY skinny girls..) I get that for the cardio ideas. I HATE cardio, so I am always looking for fresh ideas to get it done! The issue before last, they even had a KICKBOXING routine!!! That was fun!

So today wasn't bad. I got up around 8.00 am so that pushed everything forward so I didn't end up needed something in the car on the way to work, I had my chicken and rice before I left. This is about how my day went:

8.30 am: 2 hardboiled eggs, 1 piece oatmeal toast (I though it was whole wheat but my dad pointed out that it's actually oatmeal).
10.00 am: Cardio at the gym.
11.30 am: Banana Smoothie.
2.30 pm: Chicken, rice, spinach.

I do admit to having a small cookie and one square of a Caramilk bar at work. Darn coworkers! At work I was feeling very tired. I don't know why. I didn't workout too hard at the gym. Ah well.

At the gym I'm up to 3 min jog/1-1/2 min walk, and 5 min jog/2-1/2 min walk repeated twice on the treadmill. When I first started I could do 60 sec jog and I was ready to walk. Now I'm up to 5 whole min...
