I have a girl roommate who i go to the gym with every morning. The only thing she does are the treadmills and elliptical machines (she's great at them though, she's in real good cariovascular shape). She keeps complaining about how 'fat' she is (she's about 5'6" and 115 pounds). Let me tell you, she's rail thin. I checked her arm out and it's skinny and all flabby. I try to convince her to do some weight exercises and she does them, but then she complains that she doesn't want 'man arms'. Also, she eats like nothing. For breakfast, she'll have cereal. For lunch, she'll have a whole canteloupe. For dinner, she'll have ramen noddles, with lettuce and maybe an egg.
Anyone know how to convince her to do it 'my way'? Maybe there are some good pictures of hot women who do weight training who don't look 'manish'?

Sit her down and explain to her the following:
1. She will never get "man arms." The only way this would happen is if she were taking steroid or growth hormone injections. The number one reason I hear from women for not lifting weights is the fear of looking like the female bodybuilders. Those women take so many steroids and hormones that they're more man than woman. Women don't naturally produce enough testosterone, gh, etc, to build that much muscle mass.
2. Muscle mass increases metabolism - which means she'll burn fat even faster the more muscle mass she carries on her body. Pretty simple.
3. Benching will make her boobs look bigger. Adding muscle underneath the breasts will push them out and create the illusion of a larger cup size, lol.
4. It strengthens your bones, which will help prevent osteoporosis later on.
5. If she gives in and agrees to lift, don't let her do the whole "light weight, high reps" thing. It's pointless. THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS TONING. The only thing that will "TONE" her body is to lift heavy for 8-10 reps, add muscle mass, then lower body fat. Typically, low 20's to mid-teens is considered healthy for women. Men, on the other hand, have a slightly lower range, from ~ 15% to 8%. These are just rough guidelines, however.
6. Related to number 5, if she does loads of cardio and no resistance training, she'll end up being "skinny soft," which from the sound of it, she already has begun to be. Just tell her that lots of skinny women still have cellulite and a droopy, sagging look. It's gross. Really gross.
Some celebs that train with weights [or at least appear to] include Jennifer Garner, Brook Burke, Evangeline Lily, Halle Berry, Jessica Simpson, Charlize Theron, and Jessica Alba, off the top of my head. You're = you are.
Your = your.
I have no respect for those with no respect for logic.

Just tell her, if it was so easy to become buff overnight, everybody in the universe would be looking splendid. I've also read that women only experience 1/3 the gains in muscle mass compared to men after a workout and if the gains after a workout for men are not even noticeable, then i'm sure women would find it real tough to put on muscle mass.

Gaining definition will be in terms of gaining muscle and/or losing fat.
Low weight at high reps does NEITHER of those. All it does is build endurance in the muscles at low weight which is only really useful if you are moving lots of stuff around in a kitchen.... Actually, come to think of it, low weight at high reps may be beneficial if women stay in the kitchen and make us more food.Last edited by braindx; 06-05-2006 at 12:09 AM.

As far as the eating, she needs to understand that eating 5 or 6 small meals a day will better fuel her for the exercise she needs to do and it will keep her metabolism elevated better as will the newly found muscle mass. the metabolism stays elevated with the consistant flow of nutrients and leads to less storage of fat since the nutrients are being used to repair the muscle tissue. It's a double edged sword that uses both edges to trim the fat.

The key to getting a woman to do something she doesn't want to do is compromise. For example, with my girlfriend..I'll have sex with her first..and THEN we'll watch the game together. That way she gets what she really wants..and then I get to watch the game.
Now notice we did what she wants first. That's the key to a successful relationship...doing whatever she wants first... and probably more often.
Terrific hijack BTW.There is no finish line.
Overtraining happens far less often than laziness.

Point her over to Mistress Krista

I find it's a very good site for convincing girls that they won't turn into Arnie overnight just by lifting weights.
