Weighted Pullups imo is the second best, then barbell rows and t-bars. All of them are important, and they all should be done.

T-Bar rows if you can use the V attachment. Otherwise cable rows.

What is this "besides deads" business? Deads build erectors and traps.
Yates Rows + T-Bar Rows = King of upper back thickness. Throw in some pullups, and its lights out!

The most underrated back exercises are pull up variations.

in order to build a complete back, you should include:
yates rows
pendlay rows
close grip chins
BTN pullups

Each to there own, but that would never work for me
If I were to pick just three exercises:
Rack Deadlifts
Weighted Rack Chins
T-Bar Rows

That's pretty much how it is. Leaving out one of those 3 (deads, rows, & chins) is a compromise so all these "what's the best?" questions are pointless if you ask me. Do all 3.
Whether you do deads on a lower/leg day, split up your back workouts, or train all 3 together, isn't a deal breaker. You've just got to do all 3 to build a complete back.

I like BB Rows the best, but like everyone else is saying, the back is too complicated and made up of too many muscles to only choose 1 exercise. My top 3 would be slightly-wider-than-shoulder-width-pullups, BB Rows, and Rack Pulls

In my own opinion, I prefer a few solid sets of bent over rows. I must sweat a gallon while I'm doin em.

All of them, done in a cycle is the best. There is no best exercise.

don't forget one arm dumbbell rows too. add these to deads, pullups, and barbell rows and you got a mass attack back workout. that is only part of the equation though. the other part is 6 whole food meals a day and a postworkout protein shake. all the exercises in the world aint gonna do jack unless you are eating enough to recover and grow.

I think alot of people will have differing opinions on what builds the back. I personally think the most dramatic back enhancement comes from width. I've increased my back width through chin up grip pulldowns, chin-ups, and close grip v-bar pulldowns. additionally I do T-Bar rows and bent over dumbell rows. I think with an adequate number of horizonal and vertical plane back exercises anyone can get a good enough back workout

Personally I love T-bar rows...
Controlled with a slow negative = one of the best back workouts I can think of
