Oh that's me baby. Probably tied for my favorite thing to do with lifting weights, is bass fishing. I'm addicted. I spent every day two summers ago fishing, and catching the hell outta them, too. But, along came some new things, and I haven't been able to go as much as I want. I went on Monday, though... caught a nice 6 lber, but other than that it was a pretty slow day. I live in Mississippi so we're already in the mid 90's here, so it's prime fishing weather most everday. And now that I'm outta high school, I should be getting a lot of fishing in.

Who else shares the bass fever?

I only have time to get out fishing on the weekends because of work and I'd definitely be a better bodybuilder if I didn't bass fish because a lot of times i end up out on the boat longer than I expect and miss a meal. I've been starting to go prepared for the longer stays out on water though.

I used to bass fish a lot but I just kinda "burnt myself out". I still go occasionally.

I don't know about "Bass Fishing."

Bass fishing is my least favorite type of fishing... But that's just because of all the species available to me up here in MN...

If you just went with "Fishing."

I don't know... I always go into a slow cut during the spring and summer... Where I put in a maintence level of lifting... And in a way, being on the boat, with low calorie limited food choices, seems to help me cut.

I make it a point to try to never miss a lift, and schedule things to the best of my ability... (I'm even sometimes had the guys wait to hitch up the boat, while I put in my last set or two.)

I think the thing that probably screws with me the most is when I take my couple of big trips...

Like my one vacation... Every year we go up to this AWESOME cabin in the Chippewa National forest... A whole week of fishing, hiking, and just general roughing it...

During that time I allow myself to eat whatever I want... And some of the stuff is an affront to God it has so many cals of saturated fat.

Like the time for a snack I just had a bold of Nacho cheese, mixed with extra hot chili... Except instead of chips, I used bacon, and I garnished it with Pork Rinds! Then washed it down with a six pack of Sammy Light.

Ironically after that week I actually lost 8 pounds, and all my lifts went up. (I attribute this to all the wood splitting and hiking I did.)

Yep... But I count smallmouth as being different than Large Mouth...

I don't know how it is down south, but up here the two sub-species live in completely different structure, and are caught on completely different methods. (Generally speaking etc...)

I like catching smallies (My Boss actually moonlights as a smallie guide service, so I often go for free.)

LM bass... I catch 5-6 every time I go out, while I'm fishing for other things... I'm always "Accidentally" catching bass...

I suppose I might find more appeal in the LM's, if I lived somewhere that had a longer growing season (Which the bass are highly dependent on size potential linked to growing season.)... But up here anything over 5 pounds is pretty friggin' rare... So I tend much more towards other species, like Walleye, Pike, Crappies, Smallies, Pan fish for some quick table fare... And this year I'm taking up Sport Fishing for Musky.
(And of course I catch cat fish and carp in the outseason of spring to fertilize the garden.)

It's certainly one of the oldest methods of hunting and survival, but it just seems cruel with all those fish already killed, why put even more of a damper on the aquatic ecosystem?

We practice a great deal of catch and release, only keeping those which are the best eaters, and returning the strong breeder back to the water, to produce yet another strong generation... And in the case of the majority of lakes, such as winnie... The population recieves a net gain...

Not to mention we help keep the gene pool from getting deluded... In fact it gets stronger as we weed out the weaker less intelligent fish... So really... In the larger case, we're improving the genetics of the species, and insuring strong numbers for future generation...

And you know when I put it that way... I think you're harming the fishing environment by not having a line in the water!

Yeah I think some people don't understand that fisherman (At least in MN, from what I've seen... As a general statement.) We're more like Recreational Angling conservationists.

Every fisherman I know (Which is like 50 people)... We're all keenly aware of proper angling habits, and exercise them... To preserve both a healthy fishery for next year, and for the next generation...

Is the system perfect... No...

Unfortunately the generation or two before us kind of "Raped and Pillaged" the land/lakes... And they have raised a few bad apples... But us "Mindful Anglers" convert more and more people to the right way of doing things, and things are improving on a massive scale...

Heck in a few more years we won't be doding to Lake Erie as the top Walleye fishery, as we'll have ressurected our own #1 status again...

On a funny side note... One guy who's on the fringe of my group of friends, lives out in the country on a small river which connects a lake to Walleye Spawning grounds.

He went out the last two years during the spawn and poached Walleye... Granted he returned them all... But 20% of fish caught during the spawning time die within 24 hours after release...

He stuck by his oppinion that what he did was okay, and that the DNR regs are an "Over-reaction."

5 of us are boycotting going to his wedding.

So yeah you could say that some of us take it really serious.

Yeah let me know what you hear... I was going through my tackle box last night, and noticed that I have an old dusty pack of Stinger hooks with a Gander Mnt price sticker on them...

Poachers piss me off...

Now I grew up about two nickles above poor white trash... Bad neighborhood etc... (So I'm that poster boy for poor kid makes good etc...) Well one of my neighbors would always poach deer in the spring... And he'd hang them from a tree he had out back, which was fenced in and between two double storied shed's... So the only way you'd see was if snuck into his property.


Every year, I'd call up the DNR, and report them...
The DNR would then CALL HIM and say "We've had a report that you are poaching deer and an officer will be there shortly."

Sure enough he never got caught... Thanks to the "Advanced Warning."

So one year my neighbor and I snuck into this guys yard... And took polaroids of the deer...

We called the DNR... They gave him the warning call... DNR showed up to find nothing... So my neighbor brought him pictures... DNR said they couldn't do anything because the didn't actually see him with the Deer...

Then the asshat calls the cops and has them give my neighbor a trespassing violation.

See this year I'm taking up Musky Fishing as a "Serious" endeavor...

So I've been checking out this HOT, yet little known Musky Lake that's only 51 minutes from my backdoor... Just getting the lay of the water before Musky Season opens on June 3rd...

So two weeks ago we were fishing for Sunnys... And we were hitting a bunch of Small Large mouth bass...

All of a sudden, my buddy starts reeling in a bass, and a Musky Hits it... Large drama, a flash and splash, and the musky is gone leaving my buddy with a Bass with two giant bleeding bite marks...

So this last week we were fishing the same bay, picking up some Sunnys... I caught a "Dink" (Local Jargon for a small Sunny or Perch.)

I hold the little Dink up infront of my fishing partners and say... "Now that's the definition of a Dink!" And I cast him out saying "Now watch I'll pull a musky just like "Jerry" did last week."

I cast it out... Reeled it back right away, pulled it out of the water, and on the end of my line was a sunny the size of a dinner plate!

What must have happened was that the Dink came off the line, and the Hoss (Local Jargon for a Large Sunny) hit just near the boat.

But it sure looked like I cast it out and it miraculously transformed into a monster! So now we call that moment "The Miracle!"

Bud I hear ya. But, I don't consider it poaching if your family is too poor to buy food. That is what nature is for to provide us with food. I'm sure thier are some really poor people that can't affoard food so they kill anything they see just to eat. I know this one guy that's like 30 now. Well, he grew up in Northern Whyoming, in the middle of know where. He said they were so damn poor they would shoot and eat anything. Crows, coyotes, deer, ect. He said they would kill a deer a week for thier family and dogs. He said one time ,the game warden caught 'em, saw the shack they were living in, and the game warden said to them, "I'm not gonna keep a man from eatin." They let it go. The guy told me something, about gods law over powers any law, when it comes down to eatin'. Plus, what would of they sewed him for, he had nothin'? You gotta do, what you gotta do to survive. Not that I'm saying it's right. But, no law should stop a man from eating if he can't affoard food!

Poaching is wrong to me, but doing what you gotta do to keep alive is not wrong. There is a big difference in the two!

I totally agree. But I think, in today's world, where there aren't any nomads and cavemen, because we live in a civilized society with grocery stores, food markets, etc., there isn't really a need to go out and hunt and kill for survival. It's mostly just done as a sport, a hobby now days. And I don't think that's right to kill innocent animals purely for the fun of it--and, yes, some people actually eat them, but, again, it's unnecessary when we have so many animals being mass-slaughtered and sold in stores.

Yes, I do agree we no longer live in the Cave Men days. But, some people really have to relie on wild animals, berries, ect. to survive. Livin' off the land. But, 99% of people that hunt for the sport, but keep the meat like myself. I could get by just fine with out my protein from wild animals. I kill 'em when they are in season, and grill 'em. Free protein! If I was like Rambo, in the woods runnin' from the cops, then I would kill a wild boar not caring if it was in season. I would need my protein!

Actually there's more "Meat Fishing" being done by the poor than many people think.

Now I live in Central MN, in a town that is 120,000-150,000 people, and growing fast... We also have a poverty rate that is growing just as fast.

We also have many lakes in the area, two that are in town, and one that is just out of town... The two in town lakes are over fished and stunted... But the out of town lake, is near an outlying suburb of around 30,000 people...

Recently they built a free shuttle service that runs out to this outlying suburb. Which was meant for people to commute in and out. (We also have another shuttle which runs down to the twin cities.)

But what's been happening now the last couple of years, is that poor people from the deeper parts of the city, are taking the free shuttle out... Then walking to the far shore (Where the landing, and a rip-rap bridge is.)

They wait till boats are coming in to land... They beg bait from these guys who are landing and likely to throw the minnows or whatever out... So the anglers usually give them the bait...

Then the poor people rig up their uber cheap Walmart or Snoopy Rods... They fish all day from shore, keeping whatever they catch...

I've even seen an old guy, on several occasions, run a small perch or sunny through with a stick... Make a fire and roast it over it like a friggin' hot dog... Then pick the meat off it and eat it, including sucking down the egg sack (When they're pre-spawn.)

Even at my old office... Near by was an entire city block that had gone undeveloped... One of those old guys who wasn't going to sell his land for development owned it, but left it empty... So it was a snarl of small trees and brush...

Once or twice a week there would be an old homeless woman who would got through there, setting snares, or trying to flush and catch the rabbits with her beagle.

She came up once and begged a cigarette from me. (Back in the days when I was a smoker.) And then she just kept talking, telling me about her tape worm problem, because she eats ALL of the Rabbit.
*She even went so far as to tell me about the long ones that would "Dangle out her butthole" after she pooped sometimes.
(God I almost vomited!)

So there are people out there... In Growing numbers in fact, that are "Meat Fishing" or "Meat Hunting" for survival.
