why bodybuild?
I was talking to one guy on yahoo who said he was a bodybuilder to 'get more chicks and make smaller guys look even smaller'. he than went onto explain how he was an alpha male etc. Do you bodybuild for these reasons? Do you think many bodybuilders do?

This is a touchy subject because....it's true.
Most of the guys that lift, at least *started* to lift because they wanted to get chicks. A lot of that was because they were insecure with who they were and thought that if they made their body better, people would like them. Girls would want them, guys would be intimidated by them. That being big would make them respected.
A lot of those guys pussy out after a few months. Some stick around because they realise they enjoy lifting - but if you are doing to get chicks you are wasting your time (at least if you do it naturally anyway). It's far too much time, energy and commitment to get a body that people envy. You'd have more success buying a sports car or working overtime so you can throw money around at the bar.
The guys that lift to be hardasses and push other guys around realise, very quickly, that nobody gives a crap how tough they are. In high school, maybe even college - sure, be a hardass. After that, it's worthless. Being able to beat up someone means jack **** in the real world. You can't put it down on your resume and suddenly girls aren't impressed when you pick on someone smaller than you.
Some guys lift for sports, and then reach an age or skill level where they can't compete but they still train because they are used to, enjoy it, and want to stay in shape.
Lifting for your health is great - but really walking around the block a few times and and a light workout gives you most of the same benefit.

I bodybuild so I can make people feel insecure around me. I go to the park and climb on top of the ladder naked and watched all milf's swoon around me as their husbands sulk in dismay whilst grilling meat on the barbecue. Sometimes I walk into walmart with no pants on and flex my glutes, and be like "whoops did i forget my pants at home?" And the ladies love it. I think these are some good reasons for one to pick up bodybuilding as an activity.

Haha - I'm in the red because of a single (joke) post about weed. It was about 3am and someone was spamming pot threads in the misc section. I made one too, asking where I could buy weed and BigPoppa negged me once. Instant red for life, lol.
I haven't maxed since 4/1 - I'm trying 5x5 I'm on week #3 right now, so my last workout was 5 sets of 175x5. I'm hoping to break 225 soon.

If you think bodybuilding means nothing in the "real world" - why the fu.ck are you on bb.com?
I do it because I like being strong, healthy, and being better than the average lazy, fat American that is on 10 medications and looks like ****. I love working out early in the morning and pushing myself physically. You got to have balance in life - and physical fitness is a key along with mental, spiritual, and social aspects.
And gonnabench325, if you think walking around the block gives you the same health benefits as weight training you must be joking or else know very little about it.

When I was younger I liked building big muscles because it grabbed attention and I gained respect amongst my friends and peers. I also loved the way Arnie looked in the movies, and that inspired me.
Being shy with girls in my teens and twenties, I thought it would help me find a girlfriend (my thinking at 17). But I soon realised that it didn't work, confidence is more important. Now in my early 30's, I have dated some women who love my body, since now I am less shy. Women DO appreciate a good body on a guy. Some only dated me for my body.
Also I liked the healthy positive benefits it bought me, such as less injuries, better posture and less fat. Now in my 30's, I like to keep fit and healthy and I continue to lift to maintain good body composition (more muscle means better metabolism and less fat). Also being an outdoors person, having a strong body enables me to enjoy energetic outdoor activities as I get older.
I never did it to act tough as Im not the type to go looking for fights or trouble.
Also it helped me when I spent my early to mid twentys working as a fitness instructor, having decent muscle size (though not excessive like competitive bb's) sets a good example for me as a gym instructor. My 17.5 inch arms and 47 inch chest were good measurements on my 6 foot frame for the average gym goer to aspire to naturally.
Everyone should do bodybuilding exercises to stay young!!!

Fair enough - I am exaggerating a bit. But if you look at purely for the health benefits, most BB'ers aren't very healthy at all; at least not the ones I see posting here. 'Nah man, I never do cardio because I want big muscles' is a pretty common saying around here.
There are a lot of health benefits you gain from weight training, but most of them don't require you to bust your ass six days a week and make bb'ing your life.

I lift cause I have 3 bulging discs in my lower back and I was told I can't do it.. I don't like being told what I can and can't do...
And I have a temper, this helps keep it in check a little better.. .

this guy probably also goes to those seduction websites, and the only women he ever dates, are ugly or otherwise deficient, dont worry about folks like that, they dont ever get far in bodybuilding.

Why I bodybuild...
It all started with the Incredible Hulk T.V. Series... Then an impressionable young (3rd-4th grade) was brought with a friend and his father to watch Conan in the movie theater. The seed was planted...
After saving my one dollar a week allowance for over a year, I purchased an Incredible Hulk hotcycle (bonus points if you remember those...) and a sand filled weight set with my dad. He's always been in great shape and showed me the basics.
Didn't stick with it (I was like 8 or 9) which is a good thing. Started back in at 12 and ended up hurting my knees, so a doctor told me to wait until I was 16... Bad news for a fat kid who hates his body. At sixteen I jumped in with a vengence. I trained with a friend at the YMCA that was 20 miles from where we lived. We had a blast and actually made some progress for a couple of kids who didn't really know what they were doing. Had Arnolds bible, and Flex magazines to figure out what to do, there was no internet...
Fast forward 15 years and I'm still at it. I've lost my way a few times, but always return to the iron. No matter how other parts of your life are going, the weightroom is something no one else can touch. It's up to you, if you put in the time and effort, it will pay off, and no one can take that away... Unless you let them.
So why did I and why do I still do it? Control and peace. I revel in the discipline, and ability to control my appearance. Workouts are a meditation that get you more and more in tune with your body and its space in this world. They also keep me sane. I take all the negative enrgy that the world throws my way (Some guy cuts you off in traffic, your co-workers give you grief etc....) and just tuck it away in the back off my mind. When it comes to be workout time I let those thoughts roll out and use the anger as fuel, turning negatives into positives in the form of a better physique.
Other reasons... It feels good to be strong. to be the guy who gets asked to open the stuck jar. The attention from women is also great. You get little ego boosts all the time, from a lingering glance to a cute co-worker pinching your bi's as she walks by. Kids are great too when they unabashedly ask you to "make a muscle" and their eyes go wide when you show them the "guns".
Being built is also a great fight deterrent. I'm not a violent guy, but I am a big guy, so generally no one messes with me.
All this and I haven't even touched on the positive health benefits. You know what they are. My fingers are tired, and it's time to go sleep and grow

your reasons change
The guy above I think hit it on the head the most. I think people's reasons change over time. I would guess that a large majority of people START bodybuilding (or any type of working out) for purposes of vanity; getting girls, respect from friends, etc. Some people, like myself, start to see the other benefits over time. For example, I found that my energy levels shot through the roof, I got sick less often, I was more effective at helping people do things like move, etc etc.
Fortunately, vanity and girls are strong motivators. Once we get past that, it tends to be the other things that keep us going. That said, we're all a little vain ;-)

I started obsessivly at 15 cause despite being good at sports I never developed from boy to man and my peers out grew me and started to dominate me and I was fed up being called 'so skinny' all the time
With little knowledge and no internet etc..I remained 120lbs at 5'10 up til 18 years old when I then got internet and learned about 'diet'
I then got 'huge' and not only beneifted by increasing my weight (not just muscle I didnt care just wanted size) but became more confident and agressive and my sexual powers increased...
I now do weights to help me not be skinny but also for being stronger and giving more confidence plus the extra testosterone sexual powers
Plus I actually miss workouts when I dont do them, not that I always enjoy doing them, but the feeling after a heavy workout is great....when Im not working out I feel like something is missing from my life...its part of me...
I also like to flex my muscle and touch them a lot when I am in good shape (no homo)
Oh and I was brought up watching Arnie, JCVD, Sly Stallone, Bruce Lee, Wesley Snipe movies etc...

To everyone who lifts only for girls, you don't have to lift at all to get a hot girl. Just look at all the pua guys and how easily they can pick up 8's and 9's. You're wasting your time if that's all your after imo.
Anyway, the main reason I do it is because I have been an athlete my entire life and enjoy staying in great shape. I enjoy the challenges of bodybuilding because it is a competition to improve myself, not to be better than others.
lol strong 3 yr bump
