I was watching this thing on tv the other day, and this guy said if you eat somthing sugary or something containing a good amount of sugar before going to sleep, it releases a growth hormone. I just wanted to know if thats true.

Hmm...
Sugar is a carbohydrate.
I think GH would go under as a lipid.
So you see, they can't be the same thing.
As for triggering growth, yeah sure, it triggers the growth of fat cells.
Perhaps you're right, but if you are it's for reasons which are not apparent to me.

it's exactly the opposite... if you eat something sugary before bed... it will release insulin... depending on how much you eat and the GI, the quantity may be big or smal.
your body can only release ONE AT A TIME... insulin or GH, so if you have insulin in your bloodstream, you have no GH. GH is considerend a stress hormone just like adrenaline, glucogen, and cortisol... so if you wan't GH during sleep, stay away from any carbs before bed... especially if the quantity is over 10-15g.

Tom
sugar is not insulin
GH is not a lipid
The fact that you think carbs before bed = fat storage is laughable... sorry, but that has nothing to do with it... your metabolism does not shut down before bed... it just depends on how insulin sensitive you are at the moment, so if you workout in the evening, you want to load up on carbs before bed...

Well, you've kinda' taken what I said quite wrongly, so let me explain.
I didn't say sugar was insulin. I said sugar was a CHO.
Hormones - Some hormones and steroid are classified as lipids, hence I thought it MIGHT (note I didn't say IT DOES...)
I was talking about if you ate a load of sugar before bed. I didn't once say eating carbs before bed would automatically make yourself fat. Perhaps I portrayed my point badly, but I meant that if you ate a few bags of sugar every night and expected the results to make you look like Lock Bresnar, then you had another thing coming.

ok Luke you are correct...I think one thing everyone needs to keep in mind however is that insulin is a much more anabolic hormone than growth hormone.
To(V) - right, hormones, all hormones are derived from lipids... INCLUDING insulin.
you said:
"Sugar is a carbohydrate.
I think GH would go under as a lipid.
So you see, they can't be the same thing."
sugar triggers the hormone insulin which effects GH secretion... he never asked if they were the same thing... GH itself is NOT a lipid... it is a HORMONE dervied from lipids.
... just a misunderstanding
Trida - if you fed mass amounts of insulogenic sugar to kids, they would get fat... they would still grow however, it is in your genes to grow, and the mass amounts of GH that you release when you are young would still have an effect once you blood sugar was cleared. GH not only controls the growth porcess, but cell regeneration and liposis to a great dergee...

The guy obviously confused everything. When you take sugar (or any kind of carbs), your pancreas release a hormone called insulin, which regulates your blood glucose levels.
Two different things.

Not really. Growth Hormone is naturally released during the time you rest, not whether you intake sugar or not.

yes, and you CANNOT release both at the same time... do your research... it's not a possibility... would you like some articles? do a few searches... you'lll know why.... AND STOP MAKING ASSUMPTIONS!10 Inches Long... and still growing.

right here... yes, you did say they could be released at the same time... you eat sugar... you release insulin... you don't release GH

luke.. I posted that, so ****ing sorry...
and..
What would be better to release during sleep bodybuilding wise and height wise?-- GH or Insulin?
GH would better @ times when you are NOT insulin sensitive... if you workout in the later evening... than don't worry, eat LOTS of carbs before bed... you will need them! but if you work out a good couple hours before going to bed... than don't eat carbs before bed... GH is important as well, and you don't want to ruin the biggest GH spike you have.
