    Fruits Before Bed?

I'm cutting and trying to lose a lot of fat (22%). I usually have my last meal at around 11pm. I don't sleep till at least 3AM due to my work/school schedule. After work, say at around 1:30-2AM I get really hungry. Are fruits such as tangerines, grapes, bananas good to have before bed? What about nuts such as peanuts, cashews, walnuts, almonds?

Cottage cheese is out of the question because I despise it.

    Any ideas?

I agree, go with something with healthy fats/slow digesting protein. Also it doesnt matter when you sleep as long as it is a consistent schedule and you arent sleep deprived

Maybe go for some yoghurt instead of cottage cheese? (I assume you've already checked previous threads on how to make cottage cheese taste better/disguise its taste?)

He does not want sugars b4 he goes to bed. Yoghurt would be ok I guess, but if he does eat it, now it is more important to get those fats, so insulin will be controlled.....

Calories are more important than what you eat before bed, if your in deficit you will lose weight regardless of what you eat before sleeping....Saying this I normally opt for a handful of Almonds before sleeping sometimes with an apple,

True, but fat cannot be burnt for fuel while in an insulinic environment.....

has anyone mentioned celery? if not - 'celery'! hardly any calories, some say negative calories and the fibrous carbs will fill you up. I used to eat tons of fruit before bed - bad mistake

So it seems like fruits are a bad idea. Healthy fats before bed eh? Any recommendations?

Fruit is awesome, but it is better eaten earlier in the day. You are better off like others said to fill up on meat protein, cottage cheese, some fibrous veggies, protein pudding yogurt or nuts before bed.

apples are fine to eat before bed. IMO, they are just as good if not better than fats before bed. they are very low glycemic so it will slowly release insulin sparing protein during sleep and the fiber is beneficial and will slow digestion. ive eaten an apple before bed every night except within a couple weeks of a competition when you gotta cut pretty much everything out. im just saying, ive mananged to get to a very low bodyfat while eating an apple with cottage cheese before sleeping.

I was going to say MuscleMilk, but I know that has Maltodextrin and Fructose.

Are those counterbalanced by the fat in MM?

Or will insulin still spike because I know Malto is a high GI carb.

dont start depriving your sleep cuz the above quote is a myth for most people (theres some people who get away with 4 or 5 hrs sleep a night)
you burn calories while you are asleep as well...in fact in 8 hours of sleeping there is only ~120 calories extra that you would be burning if you were awake that whole time assuming you werent doing anything physically demanding if you were awake...how much sleep are you getting? in 3 of 4 people, Growth Hormone levels increase (in 1 of 4 people, GH is highest during waking). And in all people, anabolic hormones such as Luteinising Hormone, Prolactin and Testosterone are all increased during sleeping (REM). Having said this, some people get away well with 4 hrs sleep a night whereas other cant have less than 6.

Sorry Lordzed i dont mean to take attention away from the topic but i felt like i had to let people know after seeing that quote. Lets get back to the topic of the original post (fruits before bed)

    agree with dance2trance.

though people who only need 4 hours a night are very rare, indeed there are some that need 10 hours (me included)

also if ur doing lots of exercise, and on a negative calorie diet most people will find they need more sleep then if there were maintaining and being 'lazy'

    peace.

to the poster - dairy is good.
focus on the G.I of foods aswell - fruit wll spike ur insulin levels which usually isnt a good thing (though ocasions when u do want to spike ur levelsm but we wont talk about that now )
