Why do people buy dumbbell sets?

Why? I just got 2 pairs of hex dumbbells and wish I just got the one with the removable plates because I need heavier db's for chest. BTW where can I get db's w/ removable plates. My local Modell's only stock sets.

If you want to build your own dumbells, look at buying pro-style handles (you can find them on-line, and sometimes at stores like Pay It Again Sports).

You will then need to acquire standard 1" pancake plates and assemble them.

Pancake plates can be found almost anywhere.

Note that pro-style handles are usually sold individually (each), not in pairs, and they are sized by the number of plates per side:

    SDH-1... 1 plate per side
    SDH-2... 2 plates per side
    and so on.

If you are looking for some additional pairs of dumbells - already assembled or hex - try Play It Again Sports, craigslist.com for your city, and eBay.

Why do plp buy db's for their training?! Is this a serious question??? If so, your knowledge of training is null to none!

Buy a dumbell set, or at least add them little by little. The adjustable ones suck. The handles are usually too long, making them a little cumbersome to work with on certain exercises. Besides, it sucks changing the weight for each different exercise; unless all your bodyparts use the same damn weight.

For minimall investment, a pair of adjustable DB's are the way to go. Working out alone, it's not that much of a big deal to switch the plates for your next exercise. The disadvantage to a set of adjustables is that you can't do drop sets or rack runs very well. For that you either need a set of fixed or a pair of quality selector type DB's (such as power blocks).

You can also do like I've been doing. I have a pair of high quality adjustables (and I'll never regret spending a little more for them) with all the plates they can hold. I also have been slowly building a set of hex DB's, which started way back when I ran my hand through a table saw and was in therapy (that explains the 1.5 and 3 lb pairs) and has built up 5 lbs at a time to 40 lbs now just by asking for another pair at Christmas and my birthdays.
    When the opportunity has arrived,

The time for preparation has past.

i have the Bowflex DB adjustable and i love them.

i will have to buy some 60 and 70 for DB bench but i dont care working out has never been so easy just turning a dial.

And i cant drop them in my home gym its plywood so they will dent the floor and i get my butt whooped lol.

    but DBs are $$$$$$$$$$$

    they go upto 52.5 pounds.

when i first got them i could barely do the 30 pound db now i curl both 52.5 pounds 2 times with good form.

I'd save your money and either get ironmaster or powerblock dumbells.

I just purchased a pair dumbbell bars (http://www.warehousefitness.com/exer...+/product.aspx) but what plates should I get to build up to about 120 lbs for dumbbell bench presses. 8 12.5 lb plates and 2 5 lb plates if these bars can hold that much? And what is the deal on standard plates? I don't think I'll get plates there because of their price of shipping.

I was looking at the spin lock dumbells, right now the most I can get on them is 55lbs and that is using 5 lb plates and a 14" bar. I figured if I could use 10lb Plates I could probably get to 100 lbs but I am still looking for standard 10lb plates.

I don't know where you live but standard 10 lb plates shouldn't be difficult to find. I don't think I've ever *not* seen them at a sporting goods store.
