    People generally aim for 40P/40C/20F.

Is this a trick question? With 2,600 posts, you should have read this question a million times by now. To echo Meyer, 40/40/20 is a general rule of thumb. If you're timing your carbs to correspond with periods of low/high activity, then you might shift that ratio in favor of proteins, such as 50/30/20 or 45/30/25.

There is no set %. Personally I don't even aim for one. I just try to get 1-1.5g/lb of protein, at least 50g of fat, and fill the rest in with either fat or carbs. Works fine.

Exactly. Bare minimum for a diet is adequete protein (1 - 1.5 g per lb is a good range), EFAs, and fiber/vitamins from veggies. The rest of the caloric requirements is highly variable and depends on individual goals and responses to carbs/fat.
