I'm stupid so please enlight me on why Cottage cheese is ggod for me.

Why is it that whenever I see a post about bed time meal I see CC. What does it do thats so important? If I bought it should I eat it 10 minutes before bed? I heard eating anything before sleeping is not good for you since your body slows down and turns anything excess into fat.

Cottage cheese is a slow digesting protein. 1 serving can take 5-6 hours to digest. If you take it before bed, you body will be able to recieve protein throughout the night, avoiding catabolism.

Plus, it's almost like a protein supplement, except that it's actually whole food. A cup of cottage cheese has about 30 grams of protein with very little carbs and fat if you get lowfat or fat free cottage cheese.
Which exit? **** you, that's which exit.

I usually eat mine about an hour before bed and haven't noticed any signs of unwanted weight gain.

Right before bed is fine, basically, your last meal of the day would be a good one for cottage cheese and a fat source like natural peanut butter (not skippy, jif, or any of that processed junk). You obviously should start reading as many articles as you can about the basics of nutrition on this site and others if you are interesting in developing a healthy lifestyle. BTW, first lesson, that don't eat before bed crap is a myth. As long as you eat clean foods, balance you daily intake of food, and exercise (preferably resistance training and cardio is secondary) you will be fine eating before bed. If you stay up later than you last meal though, its probably no big deal either, but it doesn't prevent fat storage or anything like that.

    Anabolic = growth
    Catabolic = breakdown

The terms are used in connection with muscle. Muscle constantly goes through cycles of catabolism and anabolism. You need to be in a positive anabolic state, to gain muscle.

When you diet, you tend to be more often in a catavolic state, because you are restricting calories. Eating before bed will hinder fatloss, but will also hinder muscle breakdown. You have to weigh the balance. Slow digesting protein with low fat and low carbs, strikes that balance.

Fat doesn't necessarily turn into fat. Excess calories turn into fat. The fat from natural peanut butter is good for you, and it's a good idea to incorporate good fats into your daily diet. They help with bodily functions such as hormone formation.

I don't think there's any better way to end a day than a nice bowl of 1/2 cup Fat Free Cottage Cheese with 2 Tbsp of natural peanut butter

    Short Answer: No
Longer Answer: It could if you ate too much in addition to that, but once again if your diet is balanced and clean that day and your not eating too much you are not going to get fat because "your body is slowing down at bedtime". Yes, your metabolism does slow down, but our society has this idea ingrained in their skulls from God knows where that if you eat before bed it "goes strait to your thighs". Yes, if you eat crap and too much of it, but a good diet conquers this stupid fear everyone has.

Far from it! It's good for the body. Hang out on this forum and read up as much as you can, and read the stickies too. Like dude above said, fat doesn't make you fat. Calories make you fat.

Did you know that there are weight loss supplements that are just essential fatty acids?

everyone needs to get this into their heads FATS ARE GOOD FOR YOU

    For simplicity's sake
IF you choose the right sources (not all are the same):
nuts and seeds - almonds, flax, sesame, walnuts, ......
    olive oil
    fish oil
    avocados

You will not gain weight if you incorporate them into your daily alloted calorific intake - you need fat to burn fat

Stay away from the fat in:
    fatty meats
    junk foods

    and you will be fine

Ghostthor, you really do need to read up a LOT more on these boards as they will answer many of your nutritional questions, start with the stickies and have fun =)

You need fat for the fat soluble vitamins (A,D,E,K).
Total calorie intake is probably the most important factor determining whether you will gain/lose fat, along with macronutrient breakdown (percentage of protein/carbohydrates/fats).

    Food with good fats:
    Avocado
    Nuts (pecan, macadamia, almond, etc)
Lean beef (contains saturated fats, use in moderation)
    Fatty fish (tuna, salmon macarel)
Flax seed oil (keep it in a cool dark place)
Extra virgin olive oil, macadamia oil, almond oil
    Coconut oil (in moderation)

    Bad fats:
Anything processed, usually contains partially hydrogenated vegetable oil and trans fats

I eat around 1/2 cup of FF Cottage cheese and 50g of skippy super chunk natural before bed. Maybe add some cinnamon mmmm.. or even walnuts would be a good subsitute. walnuts contain melotonin(sp) which aids in deeper sleep or something. good stuff before bed

if you eat before bed - your stomach will be working through the night, especially if you eat stuff that is digested slowly. if you do this regularly you may develop health problems in the long run. Your body should rest at night, not work.

the bedtime thing about not eating before it is a myth ...i eat tons of food before bed and dont gain fat...the truth is what fits into your days calories and what works best for you...

Cottage cheese is good before bed because it is a slow digesting protein

This thread has answered a few questions for me, but also made me curious about a few other things.

I'm trying to cut, and I just did a count of what I eat today (1760 calories), and it looks like i had about 140g Protein / 110g Carbs / 35g fat.

    Does that look about right?

nah man that would equate to 1315 calories:

    140*4=560
    110*4=440
    35*9=315

    which in total=1315.

    i'm 6ft 2 and 220.

It was quite a rough count i did, but i'm fairly confident i took in about 1760 cals.
I actually forgot about the 2 slices of bread, and some salad i had (tomato, onion, red pepper, cucumber). Maybe that will make up the difference.

    Bread (2 slices) - Protein 8g / Carbs 32g / Fat 2g

    So that would be another:

    8*4=32
    32*4=128
    1*9=9

    Total= 1484

I've no idea about the protein/carbs/fat in the vegies, but i'm maybe not too far off.

well if you are only taking in 1315 calories i'd say that is way too low, i'm also 6ft 2 and I am 10 pounds lighter at 210 pounds and i can lose weight at say about 2500 calories without doing excessive cardio. I hit weights 5 times a week and actual cardio workouts maybe 3 times a week. I do alot of walking here and there so maybe that helps. I'd definitely say you don't have to eat so little calories man.

Edit: Just seen your edit now lol, well yeah closer to 2000 may be ideal for you man, maybe slightly higher. Also up the protein man to AT LEAST 1 gram per pound of your lean bodyweight but closer to 1-1.3 grams of protein of your actual bodyweight in pounds toward off catabolism.

    GOOD LUCK!!!

Thanks for your help. I know i've taken this thread off topic, but i appreciate it.

I'm guessing i've got about 24% bf (i've no idea really) so i assume i just work out what 76% of 220lbs is (167lbs) and then make sure i get at least 167g of protein. That correct?
