Suggest that she go see a sportsmed doc if it doesn't improve. For now, the bike is a great idea; I like it over running, anyway.

Well you tried. She's an adult, so it is apparently her decision to screw her knee up even worse as a way of showing the world how tough she is (or something like that).

She can take pride in that fact as she limps around for the rest of her life!

Recommend she do ass to the floor squats so both knees can have a bit of "pain." Its either this or buy her a heavy weight vest so she can actually be doing something on the treadmill she can progress on.
Pain and discomfort without any gain at all are very hard to put up with at all.

The bottom line: if an exercise hurts your joint, you shouldn't be doing it. Some discomfort is OK to work through (e.g. squeezing one last good rep out of your fatigued muscles). Joint pain is not. If she insists on continuing to run with a bad knee, all she'll do is make it worse.

I was starting to get knee pain a while back, so I stopped doing weighted leg workouts for three weeks or so (keeping up with my upper body, of course). When I went back, I learned to do front squats, as I could go ass to the grass with those and not feel any discomfort in my knees at all. I basically started over, using only the bar at first and working my way back up. I stopped running, too, switching over to the Stepmill (a.k.a. the stairway to hell). It's very easy to get a difficult, intense workout on this gizmo, and it's very low-impact as well.

I haven't taken up running again, but my knee pain is gone. (Well, I might get a random owie every now and then, but that's much better than feeling slight pain every time I went down the stairs.)

The only thing I could think of is to try running on a treadmill that has a flex deck (one that flexes with pressure). This may help alleviate some discomfort by reducing impact, but I am by no means a doc.

I also have some pain in my knees when running on the tredmil but the real problem are my shins

This started recently after the last 2 months of squating real heavy. I also feel this pain in my shins after squatting.

It irritates me so much, that some days i just tell myself that I will squat 230 all the time and never go heavy !
You got bigger arms than me ?
yeah ..... :) spare yourself the embarressment

its cuz, its really bad overall to run on a tredmill, because its like your legs arent getting a full extension so your joints will get injured...

but she's made it worse, even when she runs outside it hurts...
but what can u do u know?

    thanx for all the advice

She should give up running for now, and definitely work on strengthening the knee support. I suggest full squats(light if need be), leg extensions, curls, and calf raises with the goal of increasing strength signifigantly. Once the support structure is strong, the knee is much less likely to get out of alignment and cause damage/pain.
