Got an early birthday present today from my employer and got laid off.
I was just on top of the world a few hours ago talking about my kids wanting to lift and all the good things. Now I get to share this info with my family tonight. Sorry to vent here just had to do it somewhere before I tell them.

I've been there and I know the feeling. Often it works out for the better and you end up with a better position than the one that you lost. Keep your networking options open and follow up on everything no matter how strange the job seems.
Years ago i took some time off to build my lake house. I got a bit tight on cash and applied for a job washing dishes on weekend nights at a big resort. That's a low paying job to be sure. I was there for a couple of weeks and the Executive Chef left for another job. They didn't even know i had my papers when I applied as a Dish pit monkey. I ended up as the Executive Chef for Coast Hotels for 7 years. If I wasn't willing to start at the bottom again i would never have heard about the opening before it came up, they never even advertised the opening.
I've also found that it's easier to get a job when you have one so set something. Also keeps you from staying home and feeling sorry for yourself. It's also a food time to look at career choices and changes.

Well this sucks!
I had it happen to me almost 11 years ago. I was unceremoniously dismissed from a contracting position with IBM ( I've Been Manhandled). I got home one Friday night to find a message on my answering machine. I was to clean out my desk on Monday, because my "engagement was terminated". No warning no nothing.
The sad part is that we had just sold our old furniture and were waiting for the new furniture. My partner came home from work to find me sitting in the middle of the living room on a sand chair, staring glassy-eyed at the TV. It broke his heart.

I've been there. One piece of advice is to not sulk. Go out tomorrow and start looking for work. Is this supposedly temporary because of a slowdown?

I have been there, it gave me great incentive to own my own business. Stay focussed on the family and find something to do for a short term. This could give you the opportunity to do what you really want to do!

Sucks!
Been there more times than I can remember. Yes, the best thing is to start hitting the job search route immediately! Make your first stop the state employment service. Remember that their main purpose is to assist you in finding a job - they're really the Employment office, not the Unemployment office, as everyone mistakenly calls them - and that way you can start the ball rolling on your job search while simultaneously starting the process for collecting some funds in the meantime.
Networking is critical, too.
Start on an updated resume, first thing!

I'm sorry to hear this but, as already mentioned, there can always be a better job around the corner. Patience, tenacity, and hard work - the sorts of things any BBer should have to spare. A good friend of mine got laid off twice in one year and is now working at a pharmaceutical company in a great job. It can happen.

Yes its a slowdown layoff but I think its going to last a long time. Plus I really don't want to go back after the way I got screwed. I have 8 yrs in and the guy under me has 2 years in but is married to the bosses daughter. No one can stand him and now that I know where I stand I really don't want to go back.
The worst thing is and the real reason I kept this job was the hours were great so I could pick my kids up from school and coach all sports they were in and never miss any event.
I have an associates degree in multimedia leaning heavy on graphic design and web design so might be doing a lot of freelance work. Might just go to Walmart and be a greeter...
"welcome to walmart would you like a cart today?"
How was that?
I will stay strong for my family, we went through this about 9 years ago. Might be time to find that $$ partner to help me open that gym I been wanting to open.
So much on my mind....Thx for the support all of you..

I went through this six to eight weeks back. I worked for a company, a small company, that started about six years ago, the owner didn't know the job, came to me and built a business off of my back.
When it went bad I sat at home feeling sorry for myself until my partner said enough is enough. She got on the phone to sell 'me'. (she works in sales and can sell snow to alaskans)
I started with another company last week, better money, better hours and a real appreciation of my skills and experience.
Don't sell yourself short and remember that this is just an opportunity to make a career change for the better. I wish you the very best in the job hunting.

Sorry to hear that, and it never seems like it's a good time for it to happen. But it will later when you look back . I had the highest paying job of my life just a few years ago, but it was short lived, as the HQ in Germany wiped out the senior management level layer in each global location. I was lucky that I was the last to be let go in the U.S., and at least I knew it was a strong possibility. Still didn't really make it any easier. After several months of frustration searching for another career...to no avail, I decided I had to do something. I reluctantly, ended up starting up the same business I had back in the late 80's. As of now, I can't picture working for anyone else again, and all my friends are envious of me having total flexibility and freedom .
Hang in there. You usually can't see much light when your head's under water and you think you're drowning. But trust me, you will look back and be thankful for this happening because it will open new doors for you that you never would have forced open if it had been left up to you .
And as far as "8yrs in"? Pfft! Seniority doesn't mean squat in the majority of the work world anymore. Do not start thinking about how you just wasted 8yrs, because you did not. Realistically, you probably have 20yrsor more left to work, right? Plenty of time for things to come together for you

Wow that really sucks but as most stated, everything happens for a reason. Maybe you will find a better "fitting" job, or even a career on something you truly love. When one door closes another door opens.
Just don't give up, if financially you are OK, take this time to take a step back, reflect on what you really want. Maybe even rest up a little, but keep the lines of communications open, in case something new comes along.
Good luck, stay positive.

Thats the hard part about this, with all the medical problems my wife had last year we racked up some huge bills and drained the emergency fund. So not much time to think this out.. But really I think the reason I know I can handle this is because I have been lifting again. If this would of happened last month and 40 pounds heavier I'm not sure if I would of handled it at all. So we are all good..

Hang in there. Every time something like that has happened to me, it has worked out great a year down the line. Take the rest of the week to get your head together and work out an attack plan, then on Monday, attack!

I lost my job sometime ago I was making really good money and spending it just the same, my wife on the other hand wasn't earning that good of a paycheck. When I lost my job we were really scared but what made it worse was that my wife then got laid off roughly two weeks after me.
Financially we were just getting by and our savings were almost down to zero, then we both landed better paying jobs. A friend of mine said to me, "Dios aprieta pero no ahoga" meaning God doesn't give you more than you can handle.
The thing is that life always seems to throw you a curve when everything seems to be looking good and then when things seem to be at their worst BAM! something better comes along. I just count my blessings.
Keep your head up.. better things to come.....

Told my wife first 1 on 1. She was in shock first thing she asked was did they get rid of Brad too? ( the son-n-law) She was very hot about him still having a job and also over taken with stress a bit. But I got her calmed down and told her things would be ok. Her response now is we need to find you something else so you don't have to go back to a company that treats you like that since your not family.
Told the boys next and my 16 year old dropped a few words that I don't normally let him use but I let him express himself openly and he isn't happy with the son-n-law situation either. My youngest came up to me and hugged me and said does this mean you can drive for the field trip next week. Than looked up at me and smiled with a ****ass grin.
Damn I love my family.

Sorry to hear about your job Synbad, but hang in there and stay positive, something better is waiting around the corner.
The company where I work has been laying off people for a year now (a few at a time). Two of my best freinds got it last summer and they both are doing very well. One of them actually offered me a job working for him last week.
