More carbs I eat, more tired I become

I've noticed that I'm always unbearably tired after eating complex carbs, such as oats or pastas of any kind. It gets so bad sometimes I'll have to lie down and take a nap to get enough energy to move about. Can anyone explain why carbs do this to me? Last I checked they're supposed to supply, not drain you of energy.

Most likely insulin resistance. You would be better doing a CKD type of diet where you consume carbohydrates only around intense workout sessions.

Regarding the CDK diet (did a quick search) it came up as a cutting diet, which wouldn't work for me, as I've been hopelessly trying to bulk for about a year now.

Alright, try eating most of your carbs around workout sessions. Also mix in lots of fiber and fat with your carbs to slow down digestion. That should minimize the blood sugar swings which are making you lethargic.

when you say more? how much is more... reason being, I experience this too, but its only when it breaks a threshold, i.e. when I eat chinese (noodles) or mexican (lots of beans/tortillas/chips) I will definitely feel the need about 20 minutes afterwards to take a nap, but when its under 50g of carbs at a time I am fine. i get the same feeling after my protein drink which is like 70 high gi carbs in it.
not sure if it makes a diff but i do fantastic on a low carb diet when cutting. even done atkins before eating the ****load out of meats (way over calories) and rapidly lost weight.
I try to keep my carbs still very complex and small servings and also around my workouts.
I am gonna do a glucose test this weekend to see what the deal is.

I feel a lot better after something like, a big piece of steak or chicken salad, than a slice of pizza, pasta, etc.

    Cool Same way..

I feel myself the same way.. I've been for a few months (about 4) on a low carbs diet (not more than 100g of carbs including all veggies and fruits carbs) and after, when I've started carb cycle (100g for 4days and then 200-300g for 3 days..) I've started to feel weakness.. So strange, even my coach is surprised with such a result. Now I'm again eating about 100g of carbs and feel my self good. May be not so much energy but at least no such a weakness..

Your body might be better suited to fat as an energy source (no giggling at the back). It's true.
I found that after years of eating complex carbs, I decided to try out including some more fats in my diet after reading an article about how some athlete felt like he was on high-octane after switching to fats. It's working for me, you just have to fight the brain fog for a little while (only about 2 weeks) and then you'll have limitless energy. Get your carbs from fruit and veg.

Check out www.theomnivore.com and see if it doesn't interest you.

theres an article on the mail BB.com site about how to use a CKD for bulking, i think its by iron addict. true, its typically used for cutting but can be switched around for a bulking diet.

i also want to say, i have been cutting using TKD(similar to CKD) and i have had great results, also experienced some simultaneous muscle gain and fat loss. my energy used to go up and down all day, really low in the afternoon, which is when i work out too.

so, lately my energy has been really even, and i have actually been having kicka$$ workouts too.

This is the normal response to taking in complex carbs. Your body has to work hard to process them into their useable energy form and thus the imediate digestion process drains you energy levels. In addition to this your body has also reduced the amount of blood glucose you orignally had in preparation for the carb intake. So
    1) Effort of digestion
    2) Coversion of avalible glucose into glycogen
Leaves you with little energy imediatley after you take in the carbs. Solution, well for me i wait about 1 1/2 - 2 hourse between a large complex carb meal and work out, another option is to take in a few simple carbs with the complex ones to keep your energy levels up during the early digestion process.

    Just my thoughts
It aint just how much you lift but how you lift it

Proteins are known to exert an uplifting response on the brain which lasts as they are digested slower than any other macro. Consume with fats and it'll last longer.
Carbs on the other hand, make the body release serotonin, a natural relaxant.

From esearch, eating carbs will raise your brain's serotonin levles, which acts like a natural tranquilizer. So, if you eat alot of carbs, alot of serotonin will be produced, and you may feel lethargic( depends on the individual ). However, I have also read, that eating protein with your carbs helps inhibit serotonin release........ do you eat protein in all your meals?

I think you're referring to the "Anabolic Diet", first devised by Dr. Mauro DiPasquale. There's a newer version of it called the Metabolic Diet which follows the same principles.
