does anyone happen to know off hand how many awake hours a basic daily intake calculator uses?
my reason for asking this is that i dont want to short change myself due to the fact that sometime im awake a lot longer than normal. on those days im sure i would need to eat more because of the added "awake" time.
anyone know?

probably 24-8 (=16)... thats my guess
i'm pretty sure you burn more cals sleeping than resting anyway, you'd only need to take in a significant amount more calories if you're burning a significant amount of cals.2007 INBF Long Island Experience:

6 years late, but anyway--
I was looking into the same thing -- not due to wondering how much to eat based on my sleep, but rather because I wanted to deduce my RMR so that I know what to subtract from my "calories burned" from my HR monitor. If I burn 1,000 calories in a workout that's an hour long, I can't add 1,000 calories to my diet--I know I'm "double-dipping" for that hour, since I already have my total BMR/RMR estimate considered.
So here's the bottom-line from my research:
You burn twice as many calories per hour awake as you do asleep. For someone 170 lbs with a BMR/RMR of 2,000 cal per day, my best estimate based on my research is that you're burning 50 cal/hr asleep and 100 cal/hr awake (resting).
