not sure, but if they are longer they are probably heavier.. that makes a difference.

Olympic plates have a 2 inch hole in the middle, standard plates have a 1 inch hole in the middle.

I believe a Olympic bar weighs 45 LB as opposed to 8-10 for a standard. That and hole size.

Maybe a hollow one, but the solid ones weigh about 20 lbs.

Ok. The part where the plates goes on is thicker then the handle on a olympic bar right? And on standard bars its the same thickness all the way through right. So if the olympic plates have a 2 inch whole in the middle and the standard has a 1 inch whole in the middle then wouldnt the handles be the same size on each bar? When i was at a gym the bar they had there, the handle was thicker then on my bar? I'm pretty sure htey had a olympic bar unless theres some other kind of bar it could have been?

If you take a look at this link:

    http://www.dynamic-eleiko.com/products/elbars.htm

On the table you'll see Oly bars with "center sections" that range from 25mm to 29mm. The really hefty bars will be stiffer, because as a round beam, even a small increase in the diameter of the bar will stiffen the bar considerably.

Well, you can usually pick up an Olympic bar 300lbs set from just about any store that carries weight lifting equipment for about $100. Personally, I like using my olympics for barbell movements, and my standard plates for my dumbbell movements. That's how I set up my home gym.
