Smile Supplements for men over 40

I'll be 40 in May. After a long layoff from weights. I just started a 6-12 week program. My goal is to lose the potbelly and to get into better physical condition. I think that I may need some help from supplements. I am currently taking DHEA. And I feel that DHEA is helping me alot. Is there anything else out there that might help me with my goals? Oh yes I'm on Paxil and Atenolol for high blood pressure. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

    Talking

    Steve,

Great job on trying to better yourself. I would recommend a fat bunrer/thermogenic but since you already have high blood pressure I would highly recommend against it.

Basically it comes down to the good old hard work,

    Gym and Cardio
Diet...but not diet persay where you are restricting calories but making better food choices if you haven't already.

Continue with the DHEA and update us as to your trials and tribulations...

Lastly...stay away from a scale, although they are great they can sometimes be depressing. Take a pair of pants that are somewhat snug and use these as your gage for weight loss.

Feel free to PM me with any questions

    Thumbs up

For diet, stay with lean meats and vegetables. Do not eat potatoes, rice or white bread. Try steel-cut oatmeal vs rolled oats. Eliminate sugar. Eat 6 small meals a day. Take flaxseed oil, and try the CLA supplements, but not at the ame time. I think after 40, you need far more vegetables in your diet than you have ever had before.

Take soluable fiber, it helps with losing weight. Konosyl is the best, twice the fiber as Metamucil. Be a man and just swig it!

    Take a multi-vitamin.

Use creatine with your workouts, I use American Sports Nutrition Stamina.

Since you are 40, ask your doctor to test your testosterone and you can try Androgel, etc.

Don't expect any weight loss for at least 6 weeks, then you will notice it melt away as your body becomes used to exercise, cardio and weightlifting.

Paxil made me gain weight, but I can see where the sedating effect would help BP. Is it possible to try Prozac? More energizing. The ultimate weight-loss anti-depressant is wellbutrin, but it causes anxiety for some which would not be good for BP.

I am with Johnny here, unless you plan on stacking an anti-estrogen, then we are going way beyond some simple supps and into a new ballgame.

Never tried DHEA (cannot get it here in Canada) but I have just about completed a 7 week cycle of Novadex XT. The first two weeks at the max dosage caused too many side effects (lethargy, acne, poor sleep) so I dropped to two a night until this week. Overall, I cannot say wether or not I gained any benefit from it. I did notice some fat loss but as for muscle gain I doubt it. I admit to looking for a steroid like effect and in the end have to laugh at myself for letting myself get my hopes up. I would not recommend anti estrogens after this experience.

Good luck with your progress, sounds like you are committed.

I stacked DHEA with DIM and Tribulus and didn't notice any side effects (and not much effects either to tell the truth!) I'm certainly not saying don't experiment (Lord knows I have!) but in the end, it's the hard work and diet that pay off.

A year ago I was on blood pressure medicine too.
Also on medicine to control my sugar.

In fact it took a year for me to loose enought weight (100lbs) that I felt it was safe to start working out.

Frankly- after trying about 100 different ways, I just got the "sout beach diet" book and stuck to the low carb lifestyle he promotes.

I found 2 key points- of course cutting the carbs - White bread and potatos was my biggest problem. And second- change my eating habits-- EAT MORE MEALS- but make then small snak like meals.

since I started working out (bit more then 2 monts ago) I have lost another 28 lbs. and realy changed how I look. When I started my 1rm on the bench was a pitiful 110lbs. Sunday I STARTED my sets at 185 doing 6 reps at 215 on my last set.

I don't have to take pills for my BP anymore nor for my sugar.

So I would suggest you change your eating habits to losts of small meals (AND DON'T SKIP MEALS) and set some goals for 60 days from now. I choose to work out in the morning- and it works great for me-- Good Luck!

If I may get in on this conversation, I take something similar to Paxil (Nefazondone) and I was warned against taking any type of fat burners/ thermogenics so you may want to check on that.

I do, however, recommend creatine. It helped me a lot, along with following a HST program. Within 2 years I gained quite a bit of mass, but also a bit of fat as well. So, now with creatine ethyl ester out I'm taking that insterad of straight creatine. No bloating which is nice.

    Hope this helps.

    dhea

I have been using a Life Plus product called Endocryn DHEA that I really liked. Recently Jerry Brainium of Ironman talked about 7keto dhea proferred for diabetics, (and not increasing estrogen)and I am presently using it. I think it is a good idea for me.
