    Myth/Fact?: Cardio will melt Muscle.

    Is this correct?
Some people have told me to not do H.I.I.T while you're making muscle by weight lifting. Since that H.I.I.T will melt your muscle as well as the fat.

    I don't want that happening.

    I do a lot of this(Jump Rope),

    http://www.shapefit.com/cardio-exercises.html

For the real high intensity cardio people out there who love the H.I.I.T training (High Intensity Interval Training), below are the top three cardio exercise which will provide amazing results!

    1. Jumping Rope - This is one of the simplest, yet most effective exercises one can do. In just 15 to 20 minutes, jumping rope will give you an unparalleled total body workout. Jumping rope is ideal for cardiovascular endurance and enhances performance in virtually any sport - tennis, basketball, football, skiing, volleyball and more. This simple exercise is also great for eye-hand coordination, lateral movement, foot and hand speed and agility.
    Sometimes even thrice a day.

    Please someone demystify this.

EDIT: Sorry, wrong section. Mod, please move thread to Fat Loss forum.

    It's 99% myth.

The fact is that large amounts of cardio, such as that done in marathon training or other grueling endurance events, can lead to significant muscle loss. For a healthy individual engaged in normal daily activity, it shouldn't even be an afterthought.

I have a buddy who is studying kinesiology told me that doing cardio while trying to gain muscle is not bad for you. It's a myth. He said that cardio burns fat. I would remember that timing is key. It's better to not do cardio after lifting.

    Check out this link:
    http://www.bodybuilding.com/fun/kelly3.htm

Good luck, man... and keep on doing cardio.

    Cardio not after weight lifting...
Do you mean not right after weight lifting(10-20-30 minutes), or not even 3 hours later?

Thanks for the link. I'll give it a read. Is this legit though? I mean the page is black and has yellow text etc. Kind of like an eye grabber technique. You know, "ATTENTION" in blue or some fancy color type thing.
    No offense, just inquiring.

Yeah I would not worry about, only thing you *might* want to look at is how many "intense" cardio sessions you go about in a week with regards to the number of weight lifting sessions as a hard cardio sessions can definitely put stress on CNS.

I have been researching H.I.I.T. and I havent read anything that states that it will burn muscle...you are only suppose to do it 2-5 times a week pending on how intense you work out and how many times you workout.

    Very simple:

Look at the physique of Long distance runners compared to sprinters. The sprinters have alot more muscle mass and very low bf%. Where as long distance runners usually have low muscle mass and low bf%.

So to answer your question. Cardio does not melt muscle. Its a matter of how much and how often. If you plan on being a long distance runner and competing in marathons, then I can guarantee you that you will not look like a professional natural body builder.

Look into the Gorilla Cardio. It will help you out.

That not really too much cardio. 20 min HIIT for 3 days a week or doing what you are doing should be ok. However, I wouldn't do the HIIT before lifting. I would do it after. I think it has something to do with glycogen stores. I don't pretend to know, I have just heard it many times that its best to do cardio after weights instead of vice versa.

I think it is just that if you are tired from HIIT (which you should be) when you lift weights, you're not gonna be able to lift nearly as heavy/intense and therefor won't see the same results.

What kind of HIIT workout are you doing? Are you sure you are pushing yourself hard enough? Just as jodar said, you *should* be tired from HIIT. I know that after my HIIT workout I am pretty exhausted. I don't think even ephedrine could make me pep up enough to lift weights afterwards.

is there any other kind? hiit is all about pushing yourself to the absolute limit for a time and backing off only to start again. anyone who claims to be doing hiit for half hour+ and arent tired just are not doing it right.

    anyway...

yes hiit will burn muscle, but not nearly to any appreciable amount when compared to the amount of fat you lose. if you really are completely anal about muscle retention, then stick to diet and weight lifting for fat loss.

Exactly, HIIT can be very anabolic. Supposedly you can add HIIT to a lifting scheme to increase muscle gain.

I have researched hiit and used it for a post workout cardio and all I have noticed is good results, but when I do it I have to crawl back to my truck...lol. When I get going in it for longer than a couple weeks I will post my results.
