Exercise and low white blood cell count

Does anyone know of a good, credible resource that would discuss exercise and low white blood cell count? I have read that exercise can lower WBC count, I'm curious to know how much, how strenuous, how often, if the WBC count changes with light days or days off. Thanks!

I have and I'm not finding anything that's good info. Most of the stuff talks about Lupus, cancer and HIV as possible causes.

Well I can't help you there (with a credible resource) , but making an educated guess, I think exercising wouldn't lower your white blood cell count. When it comes to blood there are so many factors that contribute to cell counts and all that, it is hard to figure out exactly what is causing it. There are so many people that exercise that if it did affect white blood cells, there would definitely be lots of info out there about how and why it affects it.

If you are asking this because your white blood cell count is low, You should go to a specialist.

Last month I had a problem with low platelets. They weren't extremely low (nothing serious), but they weren't exactly in the average range. I bruise easily and always wondered why.
I asked the doctor why they were low, and he told me that there were soooo many reasons that the only way to figure out the correct one would be to go to a hematologist and get my blood analyzed.

    Good luck on your search

Thanks so much for the article! I read it and found what I could understand to be interesting. I have a low Neutrophil count (one of the WBC types) and an overall low WBC count. I'm trying to narrow down the possible causes as it's something that's been low for a while (but I've been feeling ok). I wondered if exercise would causes these problems or if I had cause for concern!

Yes actually...I don't have the above research in front of me at this moment, however it said that exercise does not suppress WBC count (except maybe during and immediately after a strenuous exercise session), however extreme exercise will suppress WBC count (on a continuous basis). They quoted some studies done on athletes such as marathoners who had a vigorous training schedule and said how their WBC count was lower during those training periods. I know that on average, after about 40 minutes of strenuous exercise the immune system is compromised and one is much more prone to picking up the common cold and such illnesses. I teach Spinning and can do 45 minutes classes all week long (only a true 30 - 35 minutes of strenuous work), but I will catch a cold almost every time after an hour class (45-50 minutes of strenuous work). I guess the low WBC count that I have doesn't help either!
