Dumbbell Set
How much would you pay for a good set of dumbbells? I am thinking about a 90 pound set and I was checking out this local company who charges $25 for a pair of spin lock bars and $0.69 per pound of weight, which adds up to $87.10. Comments?

At first I went "69 cents/lb is high!" but then I saw "Canada" and went "Canadian...exchange...let's see that's...not too bad". Sounds OK to me, if those are Canadian currency prices.

I'd pay up to $1200 for a good set of dumbbells, fixed dumbbells that is. You can buy a 5-100lb hex db set for that much which is more than enough weight for me at the moment. I think the extra cost of having fixed dumbbells for hassle-free and quicker work-outs is worth it. I did buy an adjustable spin-lock dumbbell set many years ago but they were such a hassle to change plates. Too bad I don't have the space in my house for a fixed dumbbell set. Yes I know there are Power Blocks on the market but I'd still rather spend more on a fixed dumbbell set if space permits.

I finally, after many years at various gyms, then clearing out the family room and making it a weight room, bought a 5-120lb set of hex DBs, but had used both spinlock and oly DB handles for a few years before that. However, the $$$ to buy them took some motivation, so I did it in steps, 1 or 2 (or 3) sets each month to make it less of a "man that's a lot of $$$ for DBs" thing. In about a year, I had the whole set and I love them, but you need 2 things: the money and the space (and a floor that can support over 3,000 lbs from the DBs alone).

You could spend your money on PowerBlock selectorized dumbells. I've had mine for 6 years and it's easily the best investment I've ever made.

I've looked around for a while for cheap dumbells and found this place that has pretty good deals on the standard hex dumbbells.
http://www.jesupgym.com
Check for the seller jesupgym on ebay and they're selling 500 lbs. for $160 - any sizes you want.
You can pick them up from 4 locations.
By the way, I do not work for or know these guys - it just seems like a good deal.

Shipping on dumbells will be too much you are better off buying them locally unless you have some special needs. Buying more than one set of adjustable dumbells alleviates the need to constantly be changing weights out.

I, too, have been problems with dumbbells. Specifically, with adjustable dumbbells. The weight changing over and over has gotten to be quite a hassle and I am looking for a set of fixed dumbbells, only I seem to be able to only find sets of really low weight (designed mostly for very light workouts) or complete sets that go from 5 to 90 lbs. and cost lots of dough with a lot of weights in them that I will not use (at least not any time in the forseeable future).
All I need is pairs in increments of 5 from 25 to 45 lbs., which doesn't involve a lot of actual weights. (I only need 10 dumbbells.) but it seems no body wants to sell any intermediate sets for reasonable prices.

You should be able to find hex DBs locally (to save shipping costs) for no more than 40 cents (US currency) per lb, which would be about $140 plus any local sales tax, for 25-45 pairs in 5lb increments (1 pair each of 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 - thats 350 lbs total at 0.40 per lb).
What kind of prices have you found on this short set of DBs so far?
In what city/town do you live?

Well, I can't remember the exact prices, but when I remember when I found some hex dumbbells at (I can't remember for sure but I think it was a Sports Authority) the total for that much weight came up to over $200 something.
I live in Tacoma, Washington.
