    Lightning Fast Boxing Punches

Hello I did boxing for a while ages ago and im getting back into it now.

I am after exercises and how to train for lightning fast boxing punches.

I mean super fast I am concerned about power but would like to dramatically increase the speed of my punches.

What exercises and training should I do?

At the moment for speed I am doing sets of push ups hands close together in a fist on the 1st 2 knuckles elbows close to body and go for maximum acceleration I am going pretty well. What other things can I do?

    Cheers

    James

You can't just "learn" to punch fast, you have to be physically gifted, you could get a bit faster but nothing special.

I don't know any references other than personal experience. You can get a little faster, but like he said, nothing special.

A fast punch comes from the hips.
A strong punch comes from the feet.
    Stay loose.
It's spoze to be hard. That's why they call it a workout.

I saw this boxer doing clap pushups where he would clap in front then in back of himself before landing. Plyo's were a mainstay of his exercise program. You should try explosive movements like that whenever possible.

You can try using light hand weights and shadow boxing with these. I have used 1-3 lb hand weights and have seen good results from this. You can go through your normal combinations while shadowboxing with the weights, throwing your punches both explosively and moderate tempo..just make sure to control the movement also to prevent injury. Also, I beleive either Ringside or Title makes a pair of bag gloves with weight insert in the wrist section of the glove...So you can then hit the heavy bag or double-end bag with weighted resistance.
The other technique I have used is resistance cords or bands while shadowboxing. However, the hand weights seem to produce better results.

The medicine ball is great for developing power. For example, you could perform a drill with a partner where you are in your normal boxing stance and perform an explosive right cross with tossing the med ball to your partners right and him tossing it back to your same start position. This is a great drill for specific punching power.

    Hope this helps

the best way that I ever increased my punches speed was by punching fast.

    yeah.

practice your punches fast, if you want to be fast. Fast as you possibly can. Do sets of 1-2-1-2 as fast as you can multiple times.

    ..

here's a vid of me hitting the bag working on speed..just trying to have fast hands and by recording myself i saw alot of technique flaws like i wasn't fully extending my punches and i wasn't focusing on keeping my hands up cuz i was more focused on just improving speed.what i do is clap pushups and i use restance bands to throw punches as fast and explosive as i can for forty reps and immediately switch to standing one arm alternating rows for forty..never really shadowboxed with handweights.also i do alot of thirty second intervals go as hard and as fast i can can for thirty seconds then go back to normal speed.http://youtube.com/watch?v=JLxZ6LipVDo oh yea i also saw that i should punch a lil higher cuz i seem to be focused more on midsection height punches i had to raise my bag higher

I used to box and some MAJOR advice to you is to block for gods sakes. lol not trying to be mean but I have been out of boxing for years and I believe it would be simple to beat you because you leave so much room when your throwing your punches. Your face is wide open the whole time with no part of it defended at all. Remember defense is the key, you cant fight when your knocked out!

And for fast punches you really just need to be fit and practice, dont try to get big, the bigger you are the harder it is to punch fast. keep that in mind

I don't think any of those punches would really do any damage i wasn't putting any legs into the punches i was going for strictly speed.i wasn't worrying about movement or defense or anything really i just wanted to see what kind of hand speed i had.

Yeah for speed, use the speed ball and do a lot of skipping, it sounds dumb but you must be fast on your feet to throw some faster punches, you must be loose on your feet. But really, I don't think you would increase your speed dramatically, usually the people are gifted in that department. Just look at these fighters.
Ali, Roy Jones, Floyd Mayweather, Sugar Ray Leornard, Sugar Ray Robinson, Meldrick Taylor. These guys were naturally gifted, some people have it others don't. But you can increase your speed, I just don't think you could dramatically.

    Dittos,
Best way to improve speed is to practice speed.
Strength training is good, but IMHO, this kind of speed is heavily dependant on Central nervous system training.

However, I also believe that you must not abandon a good boxing stance, both foot placement and hand placement. You don't want to inadvertantly train bad stance.

    this statement is wrong
first all of your power comes from your hips, if your punching without turning your hips your deffinently losing speed and power. if you want to punch faster, you have to lean up. the smaller you are the faster your going to be. shed the body fat, and stop lifting heavy. you could also do all of your core work, medicine ball, light handweights, speed bag will help alot, double ended bag, heavy bad, pushups (clappers), sit and twist, etc etc...workout as much as u can to strengthen that core up and the speed will come with that
