hmmm i do anatomy and for muscles to be damaged in the correct way they need to undergo longarithmic contractions of some sort ie they need to be stretched longways. this is the way muscle cells join up to make muscle tissue. so basically your correct about the tongue, penis and heart analogy but i realy dont think it applies to the masseter (jaw) muscle...im pretty sure you should be able to develop any muscle in the muscular system, but not organs comprised of muscle tissue (heart etc)...not sure if this is correct, and you would only get limited development without weight training using gum would only get you so far i guess... to RS4life youve got the right idea, reps

My mother is a dentist who frequently helps patients that subconciously clench/grind their teeth in their sleep (a condition called bruxism). Many of them have overdeveloped masseter (jaw) muscles as a result of their condition so hypertrophy is definitely possible.
Whether it's possible through resistance training is another question though, as a bruxism patient's jaws clench at around 3x it's normal strength during sleep.
