Clean nutrition, adding muscle but not losing anything on the scale - help!

Hi,

I am currently training for my first figure competition and seem to be in a bulking phase without eating all the extra food, which is confusing me. Meaning, I'm gaining muscle, losing fat (my trainer measures me every two weeks so I KNOW my BF is going down) and yet the scale is going up. As a woman its frustrating to be working HARD and see that *&%@'n scale go up even though I'm slowly looking better...

Suggestions on:

(a) why I'm not losing any "weight" on that scale; and
(b) how to get over it, mentally, that gaining "weight" is ok in the big picture of muscle gain...

Thanks so much!!
Marna

Why do you need to be weighed? Can't your trainer just caliper test your BF? If you are not gaining around your waist, you aren't gaining fat. Who cares what the magic number says...it's of no relevance to anything.

I am the same height and weight as you, although I haven't weighed myself for weeks so who really knows (I need to update my avi!). I am wearing the same size jeans I was wearing when I weighed 12 or so pounds less. They fit much better now. My abs are visible too now.

I used to weigh myself every single day, often more than once I no longer attach my self worth to that stupid number. My scales live in the shed...my trainer wants me to run over them with the family car

1 pound of muscle is denser and takes up a lot less space than 1 pound of goo (fat). Hence the irrelevance of scale weight.

If you keep freaking out about the scale weight it will eventually hinder your attempt to build beautiful lean (heavy!) muscles....relax, it's ok

Talking

Thank you sooo much for those words of wisdom... perhaps I should put my scale in the shed too.... mytrainer does the calipers on me every 2 or 3 weeks so I should just care about that from now on.... maybe I WILL put my scale in the shed!

THANKS!!!

Yes..... toss the scale out!!!!

I try not to let the number bother me. Just focus on how you feel, how your clothes fit. Don't let the scale win!!!!!
