Another um..interesting.. PF ad
This thread is atypical for me, but the writeup that prompted this is pretty silly, and I figured I'd have a good laugh at it with you all.
The writeup: http://www.bodybuilding.com/store/pfac/plasma.html
From the ad's first paragraph (my emphasis added):
Super Plasma Protein, is > 90% protein isolate and made from hydrolyzed beef plasma. The powder is spray dried and concentrated into edible bovine plasma and is then made into bovine serum and concentrated to have an immunoglobulin content of 40% minimum. Unlike traditional sources of protein such as casein or whey, Super Plasma Protein is rich in naturally occurring, bioactive proteins and peptides. The bioactivity of the proteins offers the athlete benefits beyond an excellent amino acid profile.
And from the last paragraph (again my emphasis added):
Proteins like casein, egg and whey can be used as sole sources of dietary protein due to a highly available, balanced, essential amino acid profile but these proteins have negligible bioactivity. Super Plasma on the other hand, is rich in bioactive proteins, which help promote amino acid utilization. The proteins are larger and more complex in structure than in whey or casein, with a slow rate of digestion, which allows them to retain biological activity. Ideally, Super Plasma should be combined with whey or other high quality protein sources lower in molecular weight with a more rapid rate of digestion. Retaining biological activity is critical to the dual-benefit of promoting amino acid utilization while also supporting immunity.
So there you have it folks: whey is not bioactive according to PF. Of course they recommend that you need to combine their "beef protein isolate" with whey, naturally.

Whey protein isolates do have negligible bioactivity. The addition of SDBP in this and other protein products- GF-Pro, Body Genie, etc- adds the bioactive components back to the product while still being a pure whey isolate.
The bioactive components in SDBP and SDPP help to support an healthy immune system.
I've never seen any research on humans to suggest the SDBP and SDPP promote muscle protein synthesis. There is research on livestock to show that it is effective in helping them gain weight. It's been a while since I looked at this stuff, however.
The lactoferrin, IGF-1, Igg, and TGFB-1 in SDBP do have immunoprotective functions.

OK maybe I'm missing something here, and if so I apologize. Let me back up a moment - if a protein has negligible bioavailability/bioactivity, why consume it?
Agreed on the immnoprotective properties, I use a protein with SDBP

People consume pure whey isolates because they are quickly absorbed and utilized. It is a very "efficient" protein to consume.
Whole milk proteins and, to a lesser extent, casein proteins and whey concentrate proteins have more bioactivity but they aren't as easily digested and utilized by the body. They can also contain lactose which about 80% of the worlds population can't digest properly.
Including SDBP adds the bioactive agents back while still maintaining the beneficial properties of an isolate.
