Bench Press more than your body weight.

Greetings. I don't know if this is the right topic to be talking about here, but don't know where else to talk about this. However, I'm curious to know, who in here can bench press more weights than your body weight? For instance, right now I weight 155lbs but my max I can bench is 170lbs. Most people for some reason think it is immpossible to bench more weights than your body weight.

    Thanks.
    Shawn Davis

it is really pretty easy for most people to bench the own weight with only a couple of months of decent traning and often less.

Imo if you can't bench more than your bodyweight you are weak. Having said that the average Joe who's never touched a weight in his life would be very unlikely do bench more than his bodyweight, but asking this question on a bodybuilding site you should know what type of replies you're going to get...

    nah, that's not true.

People that are into certain standards for strength will tell you that if you can bench 1.5 times your bodyweight you're in good shape.

However, most will not be able to bench so much if they don't work out. I've yet to see a first timer bench over 110 lbs.

I don't want to get into a pissing contest and talk about when I was lifting X or what I'm lifting now, but I'll assume you've been training for a while since you're in your mid 20's and have been a forum member for over 2 years so unless you're carrying an injury, there's most likely something seriously screwed up with your training and diet.

If you post more details (workout, diet, etc.) some people here might be able to help you out.

Since total bodyweight includes fat, but only the muscle does the bench, to put bench weight relative to bodyweight is highly variable. At one extreme is the fat but weak guy that may never bench bodyweight unless he drops some fat.At the other extreme is the lighter very lean guy who can bench approaching double his weight (sometimes more).

I think benching your own weight is a common goal for guys starting out.

Coincidence that friends last week were joking that me and my lifting buddy had developed a cast structure where we wouldn't acknowledge guys who had never benched there own weight.

I agree. I was asking people that have lifted for a while or are professional bodybuilders this question. I know that people that are beginners are not going to immediatly bench either their own weight or over. I probably should of stated the question more specifically. Sorry about that. Forgive me.

Greetings Dominik. I wasn't really asking for help on anything, just wondering how many people in here can bench press over their own body weight that's all.

    Thanks.

Hi. Trust me, I mean no offense, but by the sounds of things I think you need help in the diet and training department.

It's fine to keep your weight down and focus on O-lifting or powerlifting, but if your goal is bodybuilding you'll want to bring your weight up and at the same time reach a point where you're handling reasonably heavy weights to stimulate maximal growth. And regardless of what some people will tell you, you'll only keep growing if the weights are steadily going up on the big lifts.

I can definately bench my weight flat or incline. Or I can db bench my weight.

I'll feel better when I get to double my weight.

Been lifting again for 3 months. My goal is to bench/squat/deadlift my bodyweight (220 now) by mid-summer. I can dead it now, but without good form. Bench, I'll be there in a month I think. I can probably squat it now, but don't have a spotter readily available, same issue for bench, so I haven't tried. I'm cutting so am trying to get to 190 in the same time.

It's not impossible to bench your own weight. It is limited by your BF%, though. I think people with a BF% over 25 tend not to be able bench their own weight. Once they start lifting, the composition changes, and then it becomes more feasible. But I worked out with some very overweight guys (380 and 400 lbs, not one of them was over 6'4") and while their benches were significantly higher than mine, they still couldn't press their BW.
    For those of you wondering:

I haven't touched weights much at all but I can do 10 dips for a few sets. Should I be able to bench press my body weight.

I would almost agree with this statement except,,,, Chances are if you cant bench quite a bit more than your body weight.... You probably won't look like you can either!

Personally, I've had a lagging chest for a while and just recently broke past benching my own weight. [220 pounds] Kudos for me...

I don't do flat bench, but I still am sure my bodyweight is probably my 1 RM for bench press. Bench press is a hard exercise for me. I can squat 2x's my bodyweight though, squats are my good exercise, but when it comes to bench, I am a REALLY weak presser.

i dont know my max bench press or anything like that......but what i do know is my 3x5 weights for bench, dead, and squat.

    height 5 10
    weight 152.3
    bench 3x5@165
    Squat 3x5@195
    Deadlift 1x5@185

I guess its not bad, but i definately want to get that bench up to where i am repping over 200. I am optimistic it will happen by the end of the summer.

    workout harder!

it was my goal to bench my bw when i was 12. you should be doing sets with more than your bw by now. that is if you have been training for 2 years.
